PRIMERGY N70-40 4-way Compute Node Hardware Product | Server The reliable 4-way Compute Node The innovative building block for server farms and data centers The PRIMERGY N70-40 Compute Node despite its compactness it lacks none of the PRIMERGY family characteristics that are so important for integration in a computer center. The advantages are massive computing power concentrated and highest flexibility into a small footprint. The PRIMERGY N70-40 is a ideal platform extension for today’s solution trends: complex, enterprise-wide applications are increasingly exporting subtasks to dedicated servers. Multi-tier solutions such as SAP are characterized by the strict separation of the individual processing layers. The client software (SAPGUI), the application (SAP-XX) and the data management system (SQL) run on independent instances. The PRIMERGY N70-40 is suited for this too, particularly for the application layer. But it can also be deployed as a database server if an external disk subsystem is used. Data warehousing is also a potential field of application for the PRIMERGY N70-40. In order to perform complex analyses on large data resources, a central instance distributes subtasks to individual nodes having access to the connected (enterprise-wide) subsystems. For industrial scenarios where there is a heavy demand on local computing power, the PRIMERGY N70-40 Compute Node is also tailored for standalone operation. The internal disk capacity is often sufficient, and here too, the modest amount of space required in an industry standard rack is a decisive factor. 1 Hardware description The 550 MHz Intel Pentium® III Xeon™ processor with 100 MHz front-side-bus and slot 2 offers highest performance and excellent scalability. It features a 512 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB second-level-cache. There are up to 4 processors in the PRIMERGY N70-40 possible. The minimum RAM configuration is 128 MB and this can be upgraded to max. 4 GB. An 2-channel LVD / U2W SCSI controller is integrated onboard. Also is an LAN 10/100 Mbit/s controller and a Cirrus GD 5446 PCI graphics controller with 2 MB of video RAM integrated on the system board. The PRIMERGY N70-40 has the flexibility to grow as requirements change. For this purpose it features four 64-bit PCI slots, two 32-bit PCI slots and two shared PCI/ISA slots. Six of the PCI slots are hot-plug PCIcompatible. This means that with the support of suitable operating systems, certain PCI cards can be replaced during live operation. The PRIMERGY N70-40 is characterized by maximum computing power housed in a minimum footprint and combined with high availability. This server is configured as a slide-in rack-mount module that takes up the minimum possible number of height units (4U). Up to 8 of these nodes can be compactly combined in a 19-inch rack (42 U) to provide an orderly, easily administered server installation. The module is mounted on permanently installed telescopic rails, making it fully retractable and easily accessible for maintenance work. The cable rail mounted on the module serves for cable management. One floppy disk drive and one CD drive are standard installation. In the main areas of deployment for the PRIMERGY N70-40, only drive configurations with limited internal capacity are required. When it is used for compute intensive tasks, are 4 x 1,6 inch height bays, for internal hot-replace disk drives, available. Therefore is a internal disk capacity up to 144 GB possible. While in an environment working with large volumes of data the data resource is exported to an external disk subsystem. This also provides the backup function. With its 8 PCI expansion slots, the PRIMERGY N70-40 offers excellent scalability. PRIMERGY N70-40 4-way Compute Node Hardware Product | Server Server Management The high availability of the server is a result, on the one hand, of duplicated components such as fans, power supplies (redundancy up to a certain system configuration). The nodes can be expanded in a flexible manner an offer high levels of investment protection. In loadsharing scenarios, e.g. using the MS Windows Load Balancing Service (WLBS), similar functions are provided on the individual nodes (e.g. Microsoft IIS). Requests from the individual nodes to data storage systems are then processed by dedicated nodes with external disk subsystems. The clients are assigned to the nodes on either a flexible or permanent basis. Another example of dynamic load sharing is the CITRIX server farm. Here, the clients always use 32-bit applications on that server of the server farm that can currently provide the best performance. In addition to load balancing, both scenarios also offer high availability for the respective functionality (application), as this is provided redundantly on several nodes. A characteristic of all high-availability solutions currently offered by Fujitsu Siemens (MS Cluster Server, Server Shield, Novell NCS...) is that the user data is managed in external storage units. This ensures that if a cluster node fails, another node can take over the relevant data as well as handling the crashed node’s tasks. The PRIMERGY N70 is therefore a natural candidate for these high-availability solutions. An additional system monitoring is aid is provided by LocalView™ – a LC display that is integrated in the PRIMERGY N70-40: • Display important messages directly on the server • Output significant or critical messages from ServerView • Additional editable menu with important server information Security features System access is controlled via password protection in the BIOS for system start and setup. Inadvertent modifications to the system setup can be prevented. 2 Prefailure Detection and Analyzing technology (PDA) warns the system administrator of impending system faults or problems so that preventive action can be taken. ASR&R (Automatic Server Reconfiguration & Restart) takes defective system components offline when an automatic system restart is performed. The ServerStart software supplied as standard allows quick, customized con-figuration of your PRIMERGY server. User-friendly menus with success checks are available for installation of the server operating systems Microsoft Windows NT Server, Novell IntranetWare / Net-Ware, SCO OpenServer, SCO UnixWare and IBM OS/2 Warp Server. ServerView enables all the PRIMERGY servers in the network to be managed from a central console and is included as part of the product shipment. ServerView helps reduce server administration costs in the network and, by avoiding expensive downtimes, leads to a reduction in the total cost of ownership (TCO). RemoteView is a component of the comprehensive PRIMERGY server management concept. ServerView provides automatic detection of malfunctions and allows independent launching of the RemoteView software. Remote maintenance and diagnostics can be initiated immediately. RemoteView supports local management directly on the server, as well as remotely controlled operation via modem by a “remote administrator”. Software support On the PRIMERGY N70-40 running a choice of different standard operating systems as MS Windows NT, Novell NetWare/IntranetWare, SCO UnixWare or Linux. In addition we offer Microsoft’s BackOffice components and the backup software ARCserv for Windows NT and NetWare.
