Risk Management – Storm Water Quality Purpose: When rain hits the ground and is not absorbed, it flows over the land, paved streets, parking lots, and building rooftops. As it does, it may accumulate debris, chemicals, sediment or other pollutants that could negatively affect the water quality of our rivers and streams. This is also true for other types of water, such as from car washing, pressure washing, or other activities that could pick up pollutants and deposit them in our waterways. Procedure: EGUSD is charged with the responsibility of implementing a Storm Water Management Program, which it has been actively working on since 2004. The program elements and activities are specified by California’s State Water Resources Control Board, and are intended to reduce the discharge of pollutants in storm water to the Maximum Extent Practicable (MEP). Program elements include: • • • • • • • • • • Program Management Education and Outreach Public Involvement and Participation Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination Construction Site Runoff Control Pollution Prevention and Good Housekeeping Post-Construction Storm Water Management Program Effectiveness Assessment Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) Compliance Online Annual Reporting Links to Additional Information: Videos about Stormwater Quality http://www.swrcb.ca.gov/stormfilm/ Activities for Kids http://www.beriverfriendly.net/kidszone/ EGUSD Fundraiser Car Wash Policy (pdf) http://www.egusd.net/riskmanagement/Docs/SWMP_EGUSD_Fundraiser_Carwash_Policy_2010.pdf Phase II Small MS4 General Permit (pdf) http://www.waterboards.ca.gov/board_decisions/adopted_orders/water_quality/2013/wqo2013_0001 dwq.pdf Contact Information Vanessa Sibley, Loss Control Specialist 916.686.7775 x67013
