Anglia Ruskin’s Progression Scheme November 2014 Paul Baxter, Director, Academic Office [[email protected]] Lorraine Woodward, Assessment Manager, Academic Office [[email protected]] What is a Progression Scheme? • Two prominent models: Credit accumulation Progression • Threshold level of attainment at one level before progressing to the next (higher) level • Prevents backlog of outstanding assessment and modules • Improves tracking of student performance • Facilitates further automation of on-line systems What is a Progression Scheme? • No impact on academic standards required to pass a module and, therefore, a course • No impact on the regulations governing maximum volume of failure (ie: discontinuation) • Tier 2 Process: Awards Board and Faculty Student Review Subcommittees • Retrieval Packages for students who cannot proceed Comparison with other HEIs • Survey of HEIs: 20 responded • 19 of the 20 have a Progression Scheme including: Derby Durham Glamorgan Hertfordshire Kingston Leeds Trinity Liverpool Hope Open University Queen Mary St Andrews Strathclyde Teeside Ulster Wales Wolverhampton • 17 of the 19 use a 90 credit or higher threshold for full-time progression To Whom Does Progression Apply and When? • Undergraduate students who commenced their course in, or after, September 2012 • Includes extended courses (level 3) where approved • Multi-level awards only: Honours Degree (levels 4, 5 and 6) Ordinary Degree (levels 4, 5 and 6) Foundation Degree (levels 4 and 5) Diploma of Higher Education (levels 4 and 5) Higher National Diploma (levels 4 and 5) Integrated Masters Degree (levels 4, 5, 6 and 7) To Whom Does Progression Apply and When? • Full-time and part-time students • UK/EU and international students • All core Anglia Ruskin and Associate College students (except the Cambridge Theological Federation) • Progression points identified on SITS for all courses and attached to students’ records The Rules • A full-time student must pass 90 of their 120 level 4 credits to proceed to level 5 (and likewise to progress from level 5 to level 6) • A part-time student on a 60 credit (6 year) based course must pass 45 of their 60 credits to proceed to the next year • A part-time student on a 75 credit (5 year) based course must pass 60 of their 75 credits to proceed to the next year The Rules • A part-time student on a 90 credit (4 year) based course must pass 60 of their 90 credits to proceed to the next year • No student can progress to: (i) level 5 with and level 3 modules outstanding and; (ii) level 6 with any level 3 or 4 modules outstanding • No student can proceed at any stage whilst trailing more than 30 credits (accumulation of trailed credit is not permitted) Progression Decisions Decision Proceed Proceed Trailing (with referral) Refer Proceed Trailing Cannot Proceed Discontinued Confer Intended Award Cannot Confer Intended Award Decision Deferred Refer to Fitness to Practise The Decisions Explained PROCEED The student has passed all modules for the level/year under consideration and can proceed to the next level/year of study PROCEED TRAILING The student has achieved the minimum volume of credit required and may proceed to the next level/year of study with (re)assessment outstanding and/or is required to retake or replace a module(s) The Decisions Explained: Semester 2 Awards Board only PROCEED TRAILING (with referral) The student has achieved the minimum volume of credit required and may proceed to the next level/year of study but (re)assessment is required during the July (re)assessment point REFER The student has not achieved the minimum volume of credit required to proceed but may achieve sufficient credit after the July (re)assessment point CANNOT PROCEED The Decisions Explained The student has not satisfied the progression criteria for the level/year of study but may remain on the course and agree a Retrieval Package CANNOT CONFER INTENDED AWARD The student is due to complete their course but has (re)assessment outstanding DISCONTINUED The student has exhausted the maximum combined value of retaken and replacement modules permitted CONFER INTENDED AWARD The Decisions Explained The student has satisfied all requirements for the intended award as detailed in the Course Specification Form and the intended award is conferred REVIEW The student’s record is incomplete and further action is required at Faculty level The Decisions Explained DECISION DEFERRED A progression decision cannot be made and is pending the outcome of procedures related to an alleged assessment offence REFER TO FITNESS TO PRACTISE The student has been referred under the Fitness to Practise procedures within the Rules, Regulations and Procedures for Students. Example 7 Discontinued Example 8 Proceed Trailing Example 9 Cannot Proceed Section 3: Examples 10 and 11 The examples in Section 2 are profiles of fulltime students that could be presented that could be presented to the Awards Board at the end of the students’ second year - after the summer July (re)assessment period in August 2016.
