Asking bids:
After a positive response raise by the opener is asking bid, requesting the responder to define his
trump holding (opening’s response 2NT is normal)
Asking bids can follow one another only in two sequences:
Alpha – Gamma or Beta - Gamma
Alpha, new suit, ask partner’s hold in this suit and controls, e.g. 1 - 1 - 1
1 step no support, not more than 3 controls
2 step no support, 4+ controls

Opening 1 and responses
1 opening takes care not only of hands in the 12-15 range which contain a genuine diamond suit,
but also of many other which do not contain a 5-card major and are unsuitable for 1NT (13-15) or
2 (12-15 with a fair suit)
1 -1 1
(7-15) or tactical reasons (long color) 5-15
In any system which uses 5-card majors it is essential for
responder to show a 4-card major at the one level. This
situation is bad if opener rebids 1 . If y bid 2 , its forcing
and you must go to 3 . With 4-5 responder can bid 1NT after
1 . With 4-6 he must choose between 1NT and 2 .
Previous principle of responding in the short major does not
extends to hands worth a response at the two level. Now bid
the longer suit first.
1 - 1NT, balanced 8-10
A raise to 2 (10-15) is constructive(forcing 1 round) and
the trumps are not good enough for a pre-emptive raise to
3 (defensive). You must choosebetween pass and 1NT.
10+ or 8-9 with a long (6+) good suit. Forcing as far as 2NT

Opener’s rebid after 1 - 2 . Responder not having passed originally

2
May be a limited hand with rediddable diamonds but
available also as a mark-time call when there is no
good alternative
2 2
These reverses suggest upper range and may be a
notrump probe rather than a suit. Forcing.
2NT
A limited rebid consistent with a minimum opening
3
3
3 3
Natural, no-forcing, usually good clubs
Good playing values in diamonds
Good support for clubs with a control in the suit
named. Rebid now 3
3NT
A maximum 15 with a guard in both majors.
1 -2 /
3
Inverted minor suit raises.
1 -2
The raise to 2 is equal to a 2-over-1 response,
with a range of 10-15. Forcing for one round and
tends to deny a 4-card major.
Opener may either indicate a stopper (QJx or better) in one major suit or bid
notrumps when he guards both majors. If he doesn’t hold a guard in either major
he must rebid 3 (non-forcing) or 3 .
1 -3
The raise to 3 is defensive bid similar to a double
raise by third hand after a take-out double. As the
opener may have only three diamonds, five trumps
are necessary for this response.
1 - 2NT 16 +, strong allround hands and hand with
very good trump support and
no side suit.
2NT response is Baron, asking the opener to show 4card suits upwards. Thus it is a goog move on hand 2
above, Here is another example.
The bidding goes:
1. East shows that his 2NT response was based on
diamond support.
2. West has no great hand, but he has first or
second round control of three suits and his
partner has followed a strong sequence.
1 - 3NT 3NT indicates a balanced 13-14, usually 4-3-3-3
When there is intervention over 1
