Film Jerusalem, a unique program initiated by the
Sam Spiegel Film and Television School, Jerusalem
and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Rothberg
International School (RIS), combines professional
training in film production, academic study and
exposure to Israel’s challenging social, historical and
cultural environment. The program offers advanced
study in the theoretical and practical aspects of
documentary filmmaking, and students carry out
their own productions under the guidance of the
Sam Spiegel school’s top professional staff.
In addition, students choose from a wide range of
academic courses in Israel and Middle Eastern
Studies, Comparative Religion and Behavioral
Sciences as well as Hebrew or Arabic Language.

The Sam Spiegel Film and Television School,
Jerusalem has received the Best Film School Award
16 times and is considered one of the top film
schools in the world. The School has been honored
in 51 countries with 177 retrospectives and tributes
in prominent international film festivals, such as
MOMA (1996) and the Berlin Festival (2004). Student
films represent Israel at more than 150 international
festivals each year and have won 386 international
prizes. It is Israel’s leading film school, with 70% of
its graduates finding employment in the growing
Israeli Film and Television industry.
Teachers from the School are frequently invited to
conduct workshops and present lectures
throughout the world. With its excellent, unique

Jerusalem International Film Lab, the Sam Spiegel
Film & TV School has turned Jerusalem into a world

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is Israel’s
premier university and one of the most prestigious
universities worldwide. Founded by such luminaries
as Martin Buber, Albert Einstein and Sigmund
Freud, the University has become a multidisciplinary
institution of higher learning and research, as well
as a scientific center of international repute. Today,
some 23,000 students study on the University’s four
campuses, including more than 2,000 students from
over 70 countries who have come to the Rothberg
International School to pursue degrees or earn
transfer credits. The RIS offers a full range of

Program
Pre-semester Ulpan: Month-long (100 hour) intensive Hebrew language
program during the 4 weeks prior to the start of the semester – 5 credits
During the Ulpan, students will meet once a week with important figures
in the Israeli film industry.
Semester
Fall – mid-October to late January;

Israeli Documentary Cinema – 3 credits
The course will offer a platform for discussion of Israeli documentary
cinema, allowing the students an Israeli perspective on the complicated
Israeli reality. We will follow Israeli documentary cinema from the Zionist
propaganda cinema of the early 1950s to the prolific Israeli documentary
cinema of today and explore the different Israeli “locations” as concrete
expressions and icons. During the course, students will meet with two
prominent Israeli documentarists.
Research and Writing for Documentaries – 3 credits
Prerequisite: Fundamental course in Journalism or Screenwriting
The course will examine the moral and ethical problems of documentary
making; logistics and planning; research techniques and sources; choice
of genre and style. Each student will be expected to develop one idea into
a project, which will be realized as part of the Documentary Workshop.
Documentary Workshop – 3 credits
Prerequisite: Introduction to Filmmaking / Cinematography / Editing
This intense workshop trains students in the production of
documentary films. The class covers all stages of
producing a documentary film, from the idea through
development, planning, shooting, editing, and
post-production. Students will be expected to produce
their own short documentary (up to 30 minutes).

Film Program Teachers
Dan Setton - Documentary Workshop
Director Dan Setton is one of Israel’s leading
documentary directors and producers. He is the
recipient of two Emmy Awards and a Peabody
Award. His documentary films include Kapo (2000),
Shattered Dreams of Peace (2002), In the Name of
God - Scenes from the Extreme (2004), Years of Blood (2005),
Israel’s Next War (2007), Miss Commander (2010)
and State 194 (2013).
Ruthie Shatz - Research and Writing for Documentaries
Ruthie Shatz is the director, producer, editor and
writer of the award-winning feature documentaries
Diamonds and Rust, Garden, The Collaborator and
His Family and the successful doc series Ichilov
Hospital. Shatz is also a creative and production
consultant working with various film institutions and a teacher
at the Sam Spiegel School.
Yair Lev - Israeli Documentary Cinema
Yair Lev is an award-winning documentary
filmmaker and film lecturer. He teaches filmmaking
and cinema theory at the Sam Spiegel School and
Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Since 2008 he
has been the Head of Studies of "Greenhouse", a
highly successful development program for Southern
Mediterranean filmmakers.
