Mission Statement
The Community College of Rhode Island Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation, an
integral part of the curriculum, is dedicated to each individual physical education student and student-athlete by
providing a high quality, nationally acclaimed and accredited program which promotes academic and athletic
excellence.
Vision Statement
The intercollegiate program at the Community College of Rhode Island is an accepted and integral part of the
curriculum which produces many benefits difficult to achieve in other areas of education. The coaches of
intercollegiate sports often times have greater opportunity to achieve many educational goals by using the
athletic fields as an extension of the classroom. Under these circumstances, intercollegiate teams achieve many
educational goals because they have the advantage of more time on task and smaller numbers of students who
are highly motivated. Intercollegiate competition achieves greater measures of physical fitness, motor skills
development, and sound social, emotional and mental attitudes, while pursuing the academic and athletic
growth and development of each individual student-athlete. We will excel in sportsmanship, team play and
competitive spirit while providing a strong academic foundation.
Goals

To create an environment that provides quality instruction and encourages maximum participation

To have the most qualified coaching personnel

To provide an academic support program to all student-athletes

To transfer 100% of our student-athletes to 4-year institutions of higher learning

CCRI Policy on Alcohol Use
• Possession and/or consumption of alcohol is strictly controlled by the College. Rhode
Island law states that no alcoholic beverages can be sold, delivered, given, or consumed
in any way by a person under 21 years of age.
• Anyone under the age of 21 who knowingly makes false statements as to his/her age in
order to purchase or in any way procure or consume alcoholic beverages shall be subject
to appropriate prosecution existing under state law.
• Assistance is available in finding community resources for those who are experiencing
alcohol related difficulties.
CCRI Policy on Drugs and Narcotics Use
• The use of narcotics and drugs on the College campus violates campus policy and Rhode
Island State Law. The law prohibits the manufacture, distribution, dispensation, sale,
possession or use of any illegal drug.
• Any student who violates institutional policy or state or federal law as it relates to the use
of drugs may be subject to disciplinary action taken by the college including suspension
or expulsion.
CCRI Athletics Statement on Alcohol and Drugs
CCRI Athletics strictly forbids the use of alcohol and/or drugs by CCRI student-athletes at any
CCRI athletic sponsored event regardless of age.

Code of Ethics and Sportsmanship
The Community College of Rhode Island Department of Athletics emphasizes and reinforces good
sportsmanship from coaches, players and fans. We are so proud that six squads- including men’s soccer,
women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, baseball and women’s softballreceived Team Sportsmanship Awards in the 2002-03 season, the highest combined number ever in the 39year history of sports at the school. Nationwide, there’s a strong emphasis being placed on proper
behavior and language at sporting events in schools. We’re confident of getting the utmost cooperation from
our CCRI students, athletes and faculty and all other supporters. To remind everyone of behavior expected
at our sporting events, we’ve posted these guidelines below and will display them prominently on signs
inside the Vincent A. Cullen Field House and the Lincoln Field House. Should there be any inappropriate
actions, behavior or language by spectators, the game supervisors working for the CCRI Department of
Athletics have the right to eject any one and/or to revoke their season pass(es). The ideals of good
sportsmanship and ethical behavior should be observed at all NJCAA Region XXI contests. This can be
defined as those qualities of behavior that are characterized by generosity and genuine concern for others.
Please observe the following rules of good sportsmanship and enjoy the game.
• SPECTATOR BEHAVIOR STANDARDS
It is expected that all spectators attending Community College of Rhode Island events will:
• Respect the entire playing of the national anthem.
Accept adverse or unpopular decisions of game officials without vocal and/or other demonstrations.
Refrain at all times from inflammatory, obscene or obnoxious calls or gestures toward officials, coaches,
players or opposing fans.
Show respect towards opposing players, fans, and officials.
Refrain from going onto the gymnasium floor, the field or any playing venue at any time, including
halftime and at the end of the game.
Cheer for CCRI teams but refrain from cheering against opposing teams.
Recognize outstanding performances on either team.
• UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR
Yelling or negative gestures towards opponents
Criticizing officials in any way
Taunting or trash talk
Using profanity or displays of anger that draw attention away from the game
Any use of unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated, and may result in expulsion from the facility.

Rhode Island Hazing Law
§ 11-21-1. Penalty for hazing
(a) Any organizer of, or participant in, an activity constituting hazing as defined in subsection (b), shall be
guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars ($500) or
punished by imprisonment for not less than thirty (30) days nor more than one year, or both.
(b) The term "hazing," as used in this chapter, shall mean any conduct or method of initiation into any student
organization, whether on public or private property, which willfully or recklessly endangers the physical or
mental health of any student or other person. Such conduct shall include, but not be limited to, whipping,
beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the weather, forced consumption of any food, liquor,
beverage, drug, or other substance, or any brutal treatment or forced physical activity which is likely to
adversely affect the physical health or safety of the student or any other person, or which subjects the student or
other person to extreme mental stress, including extended deprivation of sleep or rest or extended isolation.
§ 11-21-2. Penalty for school official permitting hazing
Every person, being a teacher, superintendent, commandant, or other person in charge of any public, private,
parochial, or military school, college or other educational institution, who shall knowingly permit any activity
constituting hazing, as defined in § 11-21-1, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be fined not less than
ten dollars ($10.00) nor more than one hundred dollars ($100).
CCRI Athletic Department Hazing Policy
The Community College of Rhode Island and its Department of Athletics does not and will not condone hazing
in any form. As per Rhode Island Hazing Law (11-21-1) the organizer of or participant in any activity
constituting hazing shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. If you are aware of such incidents, you shall report the
incident immediately, in writing to the Dean of Students and to the Director of Athletics.
Please carefully read the above information on the Rhode Island State Law on hazing. It is your obligation to
become familiar with the hazing policy and the Rhode Island Hazing Law.
CCRI Student-Athlete Travel Policy
As we look forward to traveling together, remember that you are representing the Community
College of Rhode Island, Your Team and Yourself. As such, please be reminded of the
following policies:




NO ALCOHOL / DRUGS
MUST ADHERE TO ALL CURFEWS
MUST WEAR APPROPRIATE CCRI TRAVEL ATTIRE
ALL BAGS WILL BE X-RAYED BY AIRPORT SECURITY.
THEREFORE, DO NOT PACK OR POSSESS ANY SHARP
INSTRUMENTS THAT MIGHT APPEAR AS A WEAPON (ie: razor
blades, box cutters, pocket knives)
 DO NOT IN ANY WAY “JOKE” ABOUT ANY KIND OF TERRORIST
ACTIVITY (ie: bombs, hi-jacking)
 DO NOT LOCK YOUR LUGGAGE. EXPECT THAT IT WILL BE
OPENED AND INSPECTED BY SECURITY
 APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR AND LANGUAGE IS EXPECTED AT
ALL TIMES!!!!
