ORAL CLINICAL VIGNETTE COMPETITION
1. Two residents from each of the three Downstate Illinois Internal Medicine residency programs will be selected by
their program to present an oral clinical vignette. Presenters must be PGY-2 or PGY-3.
2. ACP Definition: A clinical vignette is a report of one or more cases that illustrates a new disease entity, or a
prominent or unusual clinical feature of an established disease. It may include a summary of pertinent patient
history, physical findings, laboratory data, or management description.
3. Oral Vignette abstract submissions are due on September 30, 2016. NO LATE ENTRIES. Abstracts must be
prepared as directed and submitted to [email protected] in a Word Document. Abstracts may
not exceed 450 words.
4. Vignettes may be up to five minutes in length, and may be followed by up to an additional three minutes for
audience questions (total presentation and discussion= 8 minutes). Oral vignettes will be presented during the
Illinois Chapter Meeting, Friday afternoon, November 18, 2016.

Specific information at this site is related to the National meeting, however, resources related to preparation are
applicable to the Chapter meeting.
6. Award presentations will be Friday afternoon, November 18, at the conclusion of all scheduled events. All
presenters are expected to attend the awards portion of the meeting.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARTICIPATION

POSTER COMPETITION
1. Abstracts are due on September 30, 2016. NO LATE ENTRIES. Abstracts must be prepared as directed and
submitted using the online submission link. Abstracts may not exceed 450 words (not including title or authors).
2. Posters must be on display at the auditorium no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 17. The room
will be open from 12 – 5 pm to display posters. Poster judging will take place from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. on
November 17, 2016. Posters may NOT be removed before 8:30 pm.
3. Posters may be 6’ long x 4’ tall maximum. Posters larger than 6’ x 4’ will not be accepted. Materials to hang
posters will be available at the display area.
4. A single, lightweight poster is recommended for ease in displaying, however, the format is up to the presenter.
The print on the posters should be large enough to be readable from three feet.
5. Posters will be numbered and displayed in a designated area. Please hang your poster only in the area designated
for your work.

7. You must be at your poster during the Formal Poster Judging time from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. If you are not
present at your poster to interact with the judges, you will not be eligible for a significant number of points.
8. Posters MUST be taken down Thursday, November 17, no earlier than 8:30 p.m.
9. Presenters must be members of the Illinois Chapter Downstate Region.
10. Presenters must be medical students or residents in training years 1-3. PGY-4’s may display posters if they are in
a 4-year dual specialty program (i.e. Med/Peds). Third year Chiefs may participate.
11. Award presentations will be Friday, November 18, 2016, at the conclusion of all scheduled events. All
presenters are expected to be present for the awards portion of the meeting.

DOCTOR’S DILEMMA COMPETITION
1. Teams must be comprised of a PGY-1, -2, and -3. No more than one PGY-3 can be on a team.
2. Team members must be ACP Illinois Downstate members.
3. Team member names should be submitted to Kate Brejcha by email no later than September 30,
2016.
Doctor’s Dilemma rules:
1. The tournament will consist of three rounds. Round 1 questions range from 100-500, Round 2 questions
range from 200 – 1,000. Final Jeopardy consists of a points wager based on the number of cumulative
points earned during rounds 1 & 2. Teams must have a positive point total at the end of Round 2 to
participate in Final Jeopardy
2. Incorrect answers will result in negative points.
3. The team that selects the first question will be decided on the basis of a blind draw. Subsequently, the
team to answer the last question correctly will get to pick the next category and question.
4. The moderator will read the question aloud. Moderator will stop reading and will not display the
question on the screen if a team buzzes before the moderator completes reading the question.
5. If the team answers incorrectly, the moderator will begin to read the question again from the beginning.
6. After buzzing in, the team should wait to be acknowledged by the moderator before answering the
question. After being acknowledged, the team must begin an answer within 10 seconds. The team
members are allowed to discuss amongst themselves before answering. Answers should be in the form
of a question.
7. If the answer is incomplete or partially correct, the judge may ask the contestant to clarify his or her
answer. There will be no challenges to the answers at the time of the contest. The judge’s decision is
final.
8. Rankings will be based on scores. In case of a tie, sudden death question(s) will be asked with the first
correct respondent deemed the winner of the round.
9. Each contestant is requested to maintain a respectable demeanor throughout the contest. Any
disruptions in the contest room will result in the immediate elimination of the individual in question
from the contest. The audience is asked to maintain silence and not shout answers.
