We all loved it and wanted you to know how much we appreciated this beautiful and special event. Our Chadbourne students also enjoyed the educational Chinese New Year exhibit that was on recently display in our MUR. It is wonderful learning about all of our different cultures and traditions. Speaking of “appreciation”, in last month’s newsletter we somehow missed the opportunity to thank our Science Fair Judges: James Siacunco, Noel Salvador, Anthony Kam, Anne Perry, Vivian Fletcher, and Dolores Wright. Our sincere thanks to each of you for your hard work and commitment to the judging process. The Fremont Unified School District has released our Parent Satisfaction Survey 2015 to our school district families. This survey is available online on our FUSD school website http://www.fremont.k12.ca.us/fusd. The link for the survey can be found at the bottom right hand corner of the web page. Your feedback will help us revise our current Local Control Accountability Plan and contribute to Fremont Unified School District’s 2015-16 plan, as well as provide us with other valuable information from you. Anette Raichbart Principal Page 1 of 8 OUR NEWSLETTER IS NOW AVAILABLE ON-LINE We are pleased to announce that you can find our newsletter on line: www.fremont.k12.ca.us/chadbourne Diabetes Walk March 3, 2015 Dear Chadbourne Parents, Staff, and Students: Each day, 40 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the United States alone. That’s the equivalent of an entire classroom full of students each and every day! While diagnosis frequently occurs in childhood and adolescence, it can and does strike adults as well. Diabetes is one of the most costly chronic diseases, and children who have T1D will never outgrow it. To stay alive, they must take multiple insulin injections or use an insulin pump, and they test their blood sugar by pricking their fingers about six times a day. Insulin is not a cure! That is why our school is proud to participate in JDRF’s Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes Program. With the slogan “Kids Helping Kids”, our students will be learning about type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. At the same time, they will learn what it means to make a difference by raising money for T1D research! We will kick off our campaign on Friday, March 13th. At that time, we will distribute more information and collection envelopes. With help from a parent, students can register online at kidswalk.jdrf.org. Once registered, students can create a personal fundraising page to share their story and send emails to friends and family members asking for their support. We encourage children to turn in their donations on the day of the Kids Walk: March 25th. We will enjoy a healthy, brisk walk and celebrate our success! Parents are welcome to join your child at the Walk! The funds collected will be given to JDRF, the leading global organization focused on T1D research. The goal of JDRF research is to improve the lives of all people affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. Please visit kidswalk.jdrf.org for more information. Thank you for your support of this worthy cause! We really appreciate all of our volunteers! Parking in the Bus Zone and Staff Parking Please do not park in the Yellow Zone in front of our school. This area is reserved for school busses that transport Chadbourne student to and from school. The Fremont Police department will be monitoring this area regularly. Also, please do not park in parking slots that are labeled STAFF – even in the middle of the school day. We have very limited parking here at Chadbourne and we need to make sure our staff has a space to park. Often our teachers will leave for a meeting or lunch and return to find no spaces available in our staff lots. The parking lots are for staff and disabled parking only. Medicine for Students If your student is required to take medications at school, you must complete the Medications At School FORM D. You may find this form on the FUSD website. www.fremont.k12.ca.us Departments - Student Support Services - Misc. Forms - medication at school. Chadbourne Basketball Results What an amazing season! This is one of the best methods for our parents to stay informed about what is happening at school. Membership is open to all and is used by the Chadbourne Office and CFFA to communicate with parents. More information may be found at the website which is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chadbourne/ Cell Phone Agreement Forms If your child brings a cell phone to school, you will need to have a Cell Phone Agreement form signed on file in the office. Forms are available in the office. Please note: This agreement must be renewed every year. Visitors on Campus A volunteer on campus is an individual who is here to help a teacher or a program on our campus. When you come on campus, ALL volunteers must check in at the office and sign-in. There you will receive a sticker admitting you on campus. Our staff is diligent about the safety of our students. If you see someone without a sticker, send him or her to the office or contact a staff member immediately. This is for your student’s safety! No visitors are allowed on campus during the school day. Please drop students off in the front of the school. Attendance Daily school attendance is very important to assure your child’s maximum progress in school. If your child is absent, please call the school office at 510-656-5242 that morning. Megan, our school attendance clerk, will clear your child’s absence. The office must verify all absences. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. All homework requests must be made before 10am. Please remember that if your student is tardy it becomes a part of their attendance record. To avoid having your child marked as Tardy – always make certain that your student arrives to school in time to be sitting in his/her seat by the final bell. Tardy students are required to obtain a Tardy Pass from the school office before they go to their classrooms. Page 4 of 8 School Lunch Checks for school lunches must be made out to Chadbourne CNS and contain the name of the child and the child's room number. Will the 6th grade math placement test cover material that has not yet been taught? The 6th grade math placement test will cover only material through unit 5. Unit 5 should have been covered by the testing window. We are using last year’s placement test and there is only one question that goes beyond unit 5. We will throw that question out. Only content up to and including unit 5 will be included on the placement test. Why is the placement test earlier this year? We need to administer the placement test end of March/early April in order to provide junior high schools with the results to begin building next year’s schedule. It will take some time for us to analyze all the data to make the most accurate placement. In addition, we must administer the placement test outside of the SBAC testing window. An end of March or early April placement test allows us to accomplish both goals. Will there be another opportunity for students to move to the accelerated pathway? There will be another opportunity for students in the non-accelerated pathway to accelerate at the end of their ninth grade year. How is the accelerated pathway different from the non-accelerated pathway? The common core math standards are a much more rigorous set of math standards and require both procedural fluency and a deeper conceptual understanding of math concepts. In addition, the math standards are not repeated each year so students essentially have one chance each year to master each standard. Because of this, the accelerated pathways must be a compaction of math courses rather than skipping of courses as we have done in the past. The accelerated courses, then, are even more rigorous as they demand conceptual understanding and procedural fluency at a faster pace in order to cover three years of math in two years time. This is why accelerated courses cannot be compared to honors math classes of the past. Students must be able to maintain a grade of A or B to remain in the accelerated math pathway. What is the rationale for the math placement test? Page 5 of 8 The goal for student placement in the secondary math pathways is for each student to be successful in Common Core Algebra 1. It is very important to avoid placing students into an accelerated class too early, where they will encounter frustration and where their interest and competency in math will be diminished. There will be two chances for students to demonstrate their readiness for the accelerated pathway: at the end of 6th grade and at the end of 9th grade. For 6thgrade placement this year, we will use 6th grade math grades and placement test results to enroll students in the appropriate secondary math courses. Student data and feedback from junior high math teachers indicates that the criteria used last year was a reliable predictor of student success and proper placement. Why can't students change to the accelerated pathway in 8th or 9th grade? The accelerated pathway is a compaction of math courses. Students take three years of math classes in a two year period. Entering the accelerated pathway at 8th or 9th would mean students would miss instruction in some of the math standards. Because the common core math standards are much more rigorous and because math standards are not repeated each year, we do not allow students to skip content. They can potentially enter the accelerated pathway only in 6th or 10th grade.
