IMI Awards Limited IMIAL Level 2 Extended Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (QCF) (600/1688/7) Who is this qualification for? This qualification is intended as a Substantial Vocational Qualification at Level 2 and has been developed for schools and colleges to deliver to learners aged in the 16-19 age group either on a full or part-time basis. This qualification is for learners who have a keen interest in the light vehicle maintenance and repair industry and are looking to progress into employment within this industry. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification and learners are not expected to have any prior knowledge or experience, however an interest in the subject area is advisable. The content level of this qualification would be similar to the study required for GCSE grades A*- C. What does this qualification cover? The content of this qualification has been designed to develop the learners understanding of the light vehicle maintenance and repair industry. It will develop the specialist technical knowledge and practical skills required to work in this industry alongside the development of wider transferable skills. This qualification also develops additional skills in maths, science, electrical and electronic principles and ICT as applied in the light vehicle maintenance and repair industry. The mandatory units cover essential knowledge and skills such as; health & safety supporting job roles and materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices. These mandatory units develop the transferable skills required to work within a number of job roles within the retail motor industry. The mandatory specialist units focus on specific technical knowledge and practical skills the learner will require to work in the light vehicle maintenance and repair industry including; routine light vehicle maintenance, the removal and replacement of light vehicle engine systems and components, light vehicle electrical systems and components, light vehicle chassis units and components and light vehicle transmission systems and components. The range of optional units provides the learner with the flexibility to acquire additional knowledge and practical skills to supplement their skills developed through the mandatory specialist units. The optional units include; Overhauling engine units, transmission units and steering and suspension units, inspecting light vehicles, agreeing motor vehicle customer service needs and the removal and replacement of mechanical, electrical and trim components. As well as the range of technical units available in this qualification, there are a number of applied units. These applied units help further develop the learner’s knowledge and skills in maths, science, electrical and electronic principles and ICT in a light vehicle and engineering context. As a result, learners successfully completing this qualification will acquire a significant core knowledge and practical skills which spans the light vehicle maintenance and repair industry, transferable skills required to work within a number of job roles in the retail motor industry and additional knowledge and skills to enhance their employability. What could this qualification lead to? This qualification helps provide entry into employment within the retail motor industry as a light vehicle service technician and also onto an apprenticeship in light vehicle maintenance and repair (as a recognised knowledge qualification within the IMI Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship Framework). This qualification also provides a high level of underpinning knowledge and skills which may allow progression onto some higher level qualifications in automotive and engineering related subjects such as the IMIAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles. Who supports this qualification? This qualification has been developed with input from employers, manufacturers and training providers and is supported by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
