Vinyl Swimming Pool Liner Care Vinyl swimming pool liners are used in the majority of pools in our country. In order to keep our swimming pools healthy and looking their best, we need to take care of these vinyl pool liners and the water that fills them up. There are two main ways to keep vinyl swimming pool liners functional for 10 or more years; correct water chemistry, and general care for the pool liner. When it comes to the chemicals in your pool, make sure that the pH level is between 7.2 and 7.6. The chlorine levels should stay between 1.5 and 2.5 ppm. The calcium hardness should be at 200 to 300 ppm and the total alkalinity should be at 80 to 100 ppm. When these levels are off, algae and bacteria can grow, or it may even cause damage to the swimming pool liner. During the summer season, you will also want to take physical care of the pool liner as well. Every so often, you will want to vacuum the swimming pool to dispose of the debris. Never clean the pool with anything that is not made for a vinyl pool liner, and never use sharp objects near the pool to avoid liner tears. Also, never use harmful cleaners on the liner to remove stains. This could damage the pool liner and cause you to replace it. Also, NEVER drain the pool unless you are going to replace the liner. You may think that in order to clean the liner you will need to remove all the water, you don't!! Removing all the water will actually ruin the vinyl swimming pool liner and result in you replacing it. The golden rule also applies to these pool liners; if you are nice to the liners, they will be nice to you. Taking Care of Your Swimming Pool February 3, 2012No Comments Pool care Taking care care of your pool is not nearly as difficult as it may seem from first blush. With that said, starting out without any experience can make taking care of a pool a bit overwhelming. When we bought a house with an in-ground pool, it was our first time as pool owners. During our first year, we learned about opening a pool — a nicer way of saying cleaning out leaves, muck and algae that developed over the winter and early spring. We also learned – believe it or not – that termites search for moisture and can find it underneath “leaky” pools, especially around drains. After bringing the water level back up by 3 to 5 inches several times during the summer, we figured out we needed a newswimming pool liner. Back then, the internet was nothing like it is today, especially when it comes to ordering supplies at a discount. What a difference a new pool liner made! The pool looked like new compared to the old, faded liner … and we didn’t need to pay high water bills to replace lost water. After our second Spring cleaning of the pool – and the expense of the chemicals required to eliminate the excessive algae and cleanse the water – we learned that a good pool cover can make a huge difference. The cover that came with our pool was a close-weave mesh that had grommets around it that were held by bungee cords. During late Fall winds and throughout the Winter, leaves and other debris would get underneath the cover and into the water. We began looking at new pool covers that had a variety of purpose. One cover was designed to literally “seal” the pool water from the elements. Other pool covers were designed to work, in conjunction with ones that “seal” the pool, to cover the pool with a durable mesh cover that protects home owners from having children from falling into covered pools and/or getting trapped under a loose pool cover. It was so wonderful to open the pool the following year and have the water be literally “ready to go” within minutes!
