CHAPTER ONE
Underwriter Certification
Find Quality First
Underwriters Laboratory
Look for Underwriter Laboratory (UL) certification
A quality set of channel letters should be Underwriter Laboratory (UL)
certified. The label placed by the manufacturing company on the side
of the channel letter lets buyers, building owners, and inspectors know
the sign has been constructed to comply with international standards.
What does this mean?
•This means that the sign's electrical connections are insulated
•The sign will be properly grounded and if exposed to the elements, the
sign will drain properly.
The UL standard requires sign manufactures be inspected on a regular
basis. This costs money to the manufacturer of the sign, but keeps your
building from burning to the ground.

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS
Evaluate the materials quoted:
A good channel letter sign needs to be fabricated by
quality materials. Light Emitting Diode (LED) signs can be
expensive due to the cost to manufacture LED's with
specific ranges of light. Producing an LED to emit white
light requires a very precise manufacturing process, driving
up the cost of the LED module.
COST FACTORS:
1.Number of Letters: The more letters, the higher the price
2.Letter Height: The taller and longer the letter the more
materials required
3.Colors: Red is the least expensive and most commonly used. Red
LED’s are easier to manufacture than white LED modules- Adding
surface elements adds cost
4.Custom Elements: Raceways, wire ways, and logo boxes can
drive up the cost quickly
5.Letter Type: Front Lit, Reverse Lit, Open Faced Neon
CHAPTER THREE
SIMPLE ESTIMATION
Pricing Example
Estimating Cost Example
Using the factors we established on the previous page we
will price a simple set of front lit Channel Letters.
SIMPLE COST CALCULATION:
1.Number of Letters: Veggiegrill has 11 letters
2.Letter Height: Standard Front lit price per vertical inch is $12
retail for this standard letter set. We will assume an average 18”H
letter.
3.Simple Formula: 18”H Letter X $12 per inch = $216 per letter or
$2376 for all 11 letters. This is the price you would pay for this set
without installation.
Remember additional
considerations when
estimating
•
•
Adding a raceway or Wireway to a sign can be expensive. You should
expect to pay around $45 – $60 per linear foot of painted raceway
A larger sign will require more power supplies to light it. You should
expect to pay $95 to $125 per power supply
Remember, a quality set of channel letters will last for 10 to 20 years, if
built well, depending upon various factors.
