Badminton Study Guide
Badminton is a game played with racquets and birdies (shuttlecocks) on a
court that is divided by a net. The object of the game is to hit the birdie over
the net in a manner so that your opponent does not return it.
Service:
The Game is started by serving the birdie from the right court diagonally across
to the opponents court.
Serving Rules:
 The birdie needs to be hit while the racquet is below the waist.
 The head of the racquet is not allowed to be above the persons hand when
the birdie is hit.
 Both feet of the server must stay on the ground and inside the court
during the serve.
 The birdie must cross over the short serve line to be considered a legal
serve.
 If the birdie hits the net and lands over the short service line, the serve is
legal.
 If the birdie lands on the incorrect court or doesn’t cross the short serve
line it is called a Fault.
Scoring:
Rally scoring is used in badminton. That means on every serve either team is
allowed to score a point. The game consists of three sets. A team must win 2
out of 3 sets to win the game. Games are played up to 21 points and you must
win by two points.
Fault: Is the infringement of the rules during the badminton game.
Faults occur when:
 Infringement of the serving rules happens.
 Birdie falls outside of the court boundaries.
 Birdie fails to go over the net.
 Birdie drops under or goes through the net.
 Birdie touches the body or clothes of a player.
 A player touches the net.
 A player hits the bird more than one time in succession.
 The birdie is carried on the racquet.
 Carrying the birdie on the racquet

racquet to the opponent’s side of the court.

the opponent’s court.
