 Welcome to Primary 5/4 

LITERACY
In term one the children will be learning a lot
of new skills in literacy. We are going to have
a big focus on creative writing this term and
children will learn all about the writer’s
toolbox and how this can help them to
improve their story writing. Children will also
be working with a reading book on active
learn primary (www.activelearnprimary.co.uk).
They will complete work in class focusing on
reading comprehension and then at home the
book should be read for enjoyment.
HEALTH AND
WELLBEING
In the very first week Primary 5/4 worked
together to create our class charter. We all
agreed on aspects from the UN Convention
of the Rights of the Child and discussed
our responsibilities as well to ensure our
classroom is a safe and happy place to
work. We will be developing our classroom
community throughout term one.
SOCIAL
STUDIES
This term we will be comparing
our local area with a contrasting
area
outwith
Britain
and
investigating the main features
of
weather
and
climate,
discussing the impact on living
things.
We will be doing this through
our I.C.T. and researching
natural disasters and how these
affect different people in
different countries.
The children will be presenting
their research to the rest of the
class towards the end of term.
NUMERACY
In Numeracy this term Primary 5/4 will
be developing their mental agility skills
everyday in class. We will also be
revising our times tables facts and
learning new ones. Primary 5/4 will be
helping to organize events for
Fairtrade as well so we will be learning
about handling larger amounts of
money this term.
R.M.E.
This term we will learn about how different
religions show love and care towards others.
TECHNOLOGY
Primary 5/4 will be using I.C.T. to research
our personal interests. We will then create a
PowerPoint to present to the rest of the
class.
EXPRESSIVE
ARTS
In art we will be focusing on
drawing this term. We will be
looking at famous artists and
developing our ability to look
at line, shape, pattern, design
and style.
In music we will be
continuing to learn some
music on our recorders.
Our drama this term will
relate to our class novel, The
Witches. We will develop our
understanding of
characterisation.
SCIENCE
This term in the Discovery
Zone we will be focusing on
biological systems. We have
experimented with the
different conditions that
plants need to grow and we
will be learning all about food
chains and how plants and
animals depend on one
another to survive.
In class we have been
learning about substances
that have a reaction when
mixed together. We
experimented with ice and
salt and used this to make
our own healthy ice cream.
 HOW CAN YOU HELP AT HOME? 
On the class website there are lots of links to games for children to play to develop their math and literacy
skills. Try to encourage your child to read their books and have fun! We will have a big push this term to learn
all of our times tables facts so please practice this at home if you have a free minute. If you would like any
more information please feel free to ask. We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help with different
learning stations and games. If you are interested then please let a member of staff know.
