AISD REACH Take One! Statement of Understanding Take One! Purpose and Responsibility Take One! is a unique offering from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) that provides for a standards-based approach for improving teaching practice and links student learning to effective instruction. Teachers prepare and submit the Differentiation in Instruction component from any of the current certificate areas of National Board Certification. A teacher can later transfer the score if he or she pursues National Board candidacy within two years. Take One! is available to all educators who have access to a preK-12 classroom and: Hold a bachelor’s degree Have completed three full years of teaching or school counseling Possess a valid state teaching or school counseling license (Exception: If you are teaching where a license is not required) When completing Take One! as a REACH PDU, teachers are placed into small cohorts led by a Nationally Board certified teacher, who will guide them through the process. The REACH Take One! Team will adhere to the following commitments: Team Collaboration Take One! Teams will: Read and respond to all email within 5 business days, and ensure that all team members receive all email correspondence. Create and include agendas in all meeting invitations. Study the NBPTS standards and rubric for their teaching discipline and choose an appropriate certificate area. Bring drafts and student work to each meeting. Complete a classroom-based portfolio entry using student work samples that demonstrate students’ growth over time and a written commentary that analyzes instructional choices to demonstrate accomplished preK12 teaching. Submit the entry to NBPTS to be scored, in accordance with the deadlines and policies of the current NBPTS assessment program. Each Take One! Team will also have a Team Leader. Terms of Take One! Team Leaders Take One! Team leaders will: Be a National Board Certified Teacher. Organize necessary documentation for the final submission. Be a great communicator and have a positive rapport with all team members. Be responsive to email and ensure that all team members receive all correspondence. Team members must be willing to work closely together and devote time in and out of the classroom in order to successfully complete the process and earn the $1,500 stipend. Team Leaders can earn an $1000. The Take One! classroom-based Differentiation in Instruction component is one of the four components of National Board Certification. The component fee is $475 per candidate. The REACH program will provide for component fees for up to forty Austin ISD Take One! candidates. However, all Take One! candidates are required to pay a non-refundable $75 registration fee to NBPTS at registration on September 20. Take One! candidates who meet the accomplished score and choose to pursue National Board certification are responsible for all remaining costs according the Guide to National Board Certification.
