The Pool is an environment of giant, concentric circles created from interactive circular pads. By entering
the pool, you enter a world where play and collaborative movement create swirling effects of light and
color. Imagine a giant canvas where you can paint and splash light collaboratively.
Like a giant game of light “ping pong,” the pool will have users running and jumping, adding, bouncing, and
mixing light together.
The Pool is an interactive environment where movement creates swirling light and color. Users play on
concentric rings of circular pads that communicate with each other. As users shift their weight or move
from one pad to another, their motions are reflected on pads with color and movement. As multiple users
play in the pool, their interactions become mesmerizing patterns of shifting and fading colors.
Jen Lewin talks about The Pool:
When I was 18, I was camping in Australia at this flat place where the tide comes in 14 kilometers. At night,
when the tide was out it left pools of water for as far as you can see. When the moon came out light
reflected in these tide pools and it was beautiful. We would run around and play in them, just struck by
that moment in time that was so magical. I went home and wrote about it in my journal and for years I
tried to imagine a way that I could make something like that and what I made is not the like moon in the
water; but it evolved from there – that idea of puddles of light that could be interactive.
That’s how my process works, I see something really beautiful and I want to share that and it takes me
years to figure out how I can make an art piece to somehow capture something I’ve seen that’s really
beautiful in nature. There’s no immediate idea, just a strong desire to do something that captures the
sense and then I try to figure how I can do it. It takes me a long time to figure out how to do it because in
my case I’ve to build the tools. I have to wait for technology to catch up with my inspiration, to push the
boundaries of use for things like LEDs and motion sensors.

So I waited until I had the right materials and I built The Pool just about 16 years after my original
inspiration and the first thing I noticed is that the interaction for just one person and a hundred people are
very different, but I needed the piece to work in both scenarios. My team and I are always trying out new
ways for people to interact on it and then we watch as those little tricks get people to interact with each
other. We also started to notice how hard that kind of interaction is on the piece itself. The current
iteration of The Pool has been built for aggressive use. It’s waterproof, so we’ve had people use it in the
rain and snow. It’s been walked, run, jumped, biked, skated and, in one case, driven over.
