Ø How important is your name to you? Do you know what it means? Have you
every wished you had a different name? Why or why not?
Ø Read Exodus 20:7. The relationship between a name and a person was
much closer in Older Testament times than today. What do we learn from
the following verses? Isaiah 29:23; Ezekiel 36:23?
Ø What do the following passages tell us about God, His name and His
people? Exodus 3:13-17; Exodus 34:5-7
Ø What privileges are associated with God’s name in the following verses?
Genesis 4:26; Deuteronomy 18:19; Psalm 72:19; Isaiah 50:10
Ø What do you think it means or doesn’t mean to misuse the name of the
LORD your God (Exodus 20:7)?
Ø In New Testament times God is still concerned for the honor of his name
(John 12:28), and that his people should bring Him honor (1 Peter 2:9-12).
What are some of the ways we misuse it?
Ø Positively, Jesus teaches in the Lord’s Prayer that we should pray: Our
Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. What are some practical ways in
which we might use God’s name or wear His name well?
Making It Real: Read John 10:1-5. Describe what you see Jesus’
illustration pointing to. How does the fact Jesus knows your name affect your
knowing His name. In Philippians 3:8 Paul writes about knowing Christ by
experience. How can knowing Christ by experience touch the way you use His
name or wear His name?
