Hornets Volleyball 9-12

9A: During this short week 9A focused on defense and playing out of system balls since we struggled this week to
play offensively if balls were out of system. We are learning to have fun and let loose a little bit. We are hoping to
get our first win this week! - Coach Kendra
9B: Another week done and we are still constantly improving. In practice, we have been working on receiving the
ball and passing it up to our setters. The first time we ran a drill practicing this, each girl said they felt like they
improved a lot. Some of them said it also makes them more confident in passing the ball. Confidence, we are
learning, is the key. It is our goal for this next week that we become more confident in every area of the game.
This week, my shout-outs go to Katie and Raquel for continuing to try new positions. Also, I would like to
acknowledge Ella. I am proud of how she continues to be an active part of the team despite having an injury that
will keep her from playing for a couple weeks. Keep up the good work! - Coach Kate
10: The B squad had a very successful tournament Saturday, getting third place overall! The girls played well and
showed that they can compete and win against other talented teams. One thing that is very unique to our team is
the girls' ability to get better as they play and arise to a challenge. As most of you know we have been struggling to
win the first game of the match but then they do really well the second game and go to a third. Whenever we get
down, the girls do a good job of rising to the occasion and fighting their way back; they don't get defeated. I
attribute this to their great attitudes and desire to do well for and with each other. They truly do work as a team
and not 12 individual players. This week we will focus on starting off strong in game one and closing from there
with energy and communication on the court. We will also focus on serving (no free points!) and defense from a
hitter. –Coach Stu
JV: Another great week with my lovely JV girls. So proud of how hard they have been battling and all the
improvements they have been making. This past weekend we did an absolutely amazing job playing in the
tournament at Maple Grove high school and I would like to shout out Nyakim who went up with her fist on an
overpass and hit it straight down off of another girls head! Huge kill and a good laugh for the rest of the team. This
weekend, we saw some of their greatest volleyball this season and to top it off we tied for third in the gold
division. So I'm very proud of them. Coaching them is very rewarding and always makes every day better. Stay
tuned for the weeks to come EHS! -Coach Aby
Varsity: Another week of incredible progress is in the books! Our focus remains on serving, passing and defending
the tip. We’re still doing 2 of 3 well, but need to improve our tip defense. I’m confident this will not be an issue
late in the season, as it’s an area of weakness we’re aware of, bothered by and fully able to fix. We’re also working
on diversifying our attack from the middle to make the job as difficult as possible for our opposing blockers.
We took down Orono in 4 sets on their home court and then opened our home season with a 3-1 win over CretinDerham Hall. Our team executed their strategy really well capitalizing on rotations and serving situations in which
we had the upper hand. Our home gym finally felt like an intimidating place for visitors to play! Fan Night was a
success and it was a blast to see everyone in tropical attire. Much respect to Captain Kate Glavan for singing our
national anthem. That girl can do it all! She followed up her anthem performance with an outstanding, wellrounded match. Saturday’s tournament @ North brought 3 wins and a loss. We were missing many players but,
I’m happy to say, there was no change in performance. The team played very hard and there are no caveats to add
to a recap of the weekend. In our loss, we battled hard. I’m very impressed by the team’s response to the first
loss. It bothered them, sure, but didn’t drag them down. They bounced right back and thoroughly dominated
their next opponent. Shout-out to Annika Jank for the first overpass fister of the season! She followed it up with
her 2nd during the North Tourney. Handling overpasses is something we worked on during practice on our early
release day last week and a prize was promised to the player who got the first one. Anni will get her prize on
Wednesday. Stay tuned for pics!
Everyone, of course, is thrilled with an 8-1 start to the season. I think that the team is very realistic, though, and
knows that they can’t take success for granted and will continue to work hard to make important changes. As we
enter the conference portion of our season, we know that there won’t be any opponents who will roll over for us,
but the team has a great mix of confidence, competitiveness and camaraderie to collect their first conference wins
in quite a while. We look forward to the challenges ahead and, as always, appreciate your support! –Coach Nikki
