Daily Bulletin #6

Let’s Play the Pairs!
On behalf of the Executive
♠ A108763
WELCOME
Committee I wish you an
♥ A85
enjoyable and successful Pairs’
Tournament in Hazyview.
Helen Kruger
President,
South African Bridge Federation
I would like to extend a warm
welcome to all those joining us in
Hazyview at Congress 2016 for the
Pairs’ Tournament. The Teams’
event has nearly run its course;
results can be found on pages 2
and 3 in this Bulletin.
The Hotel has arranged theme
evenings for our dinners and a
cafeteria style restaurant for those
who would like a light lunch.
To my executive and committee
many thanks for the long hours
planning and organizing this
congress; a very special thanks
goes to Roz Bernstein who once
again took on so many of the jobs
needed to ensure that all runs
smoothly.
Heidi Atkinson is both the
Tournament Organiser and our
Chief Tournament , along with Sid
Ismail, who just returned from a
Tournament Directors’ course held
in Prague. This year Peter Bircher
will be your scorer, and we also
have Stephen Rosenberg doing the
Daily Bulletins and assisting with
the Tournament Directing. Lorna
Speller has joined the team as a
shadow Tournament Director
which I hope will help her grow
into a future Director.
I would be remiss if I didn’t thank
Willem Fick and the Hotel staff for
all the help in organizing this
tournament.
PLAY-ofthe-DAY

In the last session on Sunday,
many South players found
themselves in 4♥ on board 23 with
no opposition bidding:
(dealer East/Game All)

♥ A85
♦ 83
♣ QJ
♠ KJ5
♥ KQ1072
♦ KQ5
♣ 74
West leads the ♦J to East’s Ace,
and many East players failed to
find the club switch at trick two,
but continued diamonds instead.
You win the ♦K and surely now it is
just a matter of overtricks? What
card do you play at trick 3?
Did you say the ♥K? Sorry, but that
is not good enough when West
discards a club:
♦ 83
♣ QJ

♣ K109
♠ KJ5
♥ KQ1072
♦ KQ5
♣ 74
The correct play is the ♦Q
discarding a club at trick 3, then
give up a club. Ruff the club
continuation in dummy (nothing is
better for the defence), cash the
♥A and when the 5-0 break comes
to light, play a heart to East’s 9
and your 10. You are left with
♠ A108763
♥♦♣♠ KJ5
♥ KQ7
♦♣At this stage, you know that East
still has J64 left in hearts. If we
reveal that nobody is void in
spades, do you see how you can
ensure 10 tricks at this stage
without having to guess the ♠Q?
Play a spade to the Ace and a
spade towards your KJ. If East is
void, it will not help him to ruff, so
your King wins. Exit with the ♠J
and claim the last 3 tricks in
hearts.
This time, the ♠Q is singleton so
any line works. 4♠ is seemingly a
better contract but is three tricks
off if EW find their heart ruffs. [See
Bulletin 3 Page 1!]

A Post Script to The Yanks are here! I forgot to mention that, on the last two occasions that Bob
Jones played in the Teams at Congress, back in the mid-1990s, he won the event, partnering Bernard Donde on one of those
occasions! Will history repeat itself? Or will a champion arise to defend South Africa’s honour on home soil?
See below for your answer!!
The Final Teams’ Honours’ Board
Heartiest congratulations to the winners in each hotly contested section! Your performances are as much a tribute to your
stamina as they are to your bridge-playing skills. Well done to all teams. As Skopl Topl used to say “MAYFGR” [May All
Your Finesses Go Right]! The final standings at end of the seven matches and 84 boards are shown below with the final
Head-to-Head between the APTEKER and der KINDEREN teams still to come.

The lunch-time Lectures-on-the-Patio will
continue to-day with a talk, an analysis of hands,
both bidding and play, and a Q & A session
conducted by
CRAIG GOWER.
Congress is in part made possible by the generous ongoing sponsorship that the S A B F receives from
The TEAMS’ QUALIFIERS
For the benefit of those players joining us for the Pairs’ event, we are repeating the final standings at end of the Teams’
9th qualifying round. The Qualifiers covered 126 boards and nearly eighteen hours of play.
