I am proud to be a Charter Member of Sunset Rotary and was honored
to be chosen as 2007 Rotarian of the Year. I’ve been on the board every
year, and love the various talents we all bring to this group. And I love
that my five-year-old granddaughter plays ‘Going to Rotary’!
I have a blend of interesting work experiences. 2009 is my 20th
anniversary with UPS Credit; I participate in our family business, Next
Step Satellite (are you in the market for Dish Network or DirecTV?);
and I love assisting home owners as a Notary Public Signing Agent.
I have a B.A. in Organizational Development from Fresno Pacific. I
currently volunteer at the Ice House Theatre, for Habitat for Humanity's
annual Bird House Auction, and as a lector at St. Mary’s.
Bart and I met in high school while ‘cruising Mooney’ and celebrated
our 30 th wedding anniversary this July in Machu Picchu, Peru. Our
three children - Jennifer, Blake, and Meredith - will each graduate this
month, and we are blessed to be grandparents to Ashlee (14), Tristan
(11), and Leecey (5). Meredith will be married May 1st 2010, and as
empty nesters, we hope to downsize our house May 2nd. I will travel at
the drop of a hat, I’ve walked six marathons (my best pace is 5:56
hours, which is a 13:59 mile), we enjoy warm water scuba diving, and
have a condo in Rosarito Beach Mexico.

VSR Meeting Minutes
12/21/09
Oh, the holidays… our last meeting before the two week
Christmas break… and Matt Seals is back with us following his
leave of absence for coaching the best high school football
program in town… I said it. Matt brought with him potential
new member… AND RHS Athletic Director, Matt Sozinho. We
hope to see both Matts together again at our next meeting!
President Desch presented our very own Phyllis with her very
own Sunset Rotary shirt… Phyllis teared up, walked out and
came back proudly sporting our Rotary logo! She’s officially
one of us now!
Jeremiah Cox, grandson of ex-pres. Michael, delivered See’s
candy to meeting… Jeremiah raised a lot of money selling the
delicious candies to club members, among others… and was
with us to dole out the goods…. Just in time for the holidays!
Thanks Jeremiah!
Amaury Van den Branden
Are you going anywhere
fun that Amaury would
enjoy? Please keep him in
mind.
President Desch was like Santa tonight… first the shirt for
Phyllis, then presenting our exchange student, Amaury, with
his very own Mt. Whitney letterman jacket! Amaury already
has two letters for his jacket… Academics and Water Polo…
way to go!
Service Chair Aron Gularte reported on the Adopt A Family
effort and thanked everyone in the club for their outpouring of
support… both financially and otherwise!!!! Aron, Mike Porte,
Wendy Rivera and I shopped for the Earlimart mom and dad
and their children!!!... Then Wendy went home and with some
help from her kids (hopefully!) she wrapped everything!
Amanda and hubby Bart, Tami Bryan Faria and Amaury joined
Aron to deliver the groceries and gifts on Saturday, December
19th. Way to go, Sunset!!!!
Foundation Chair Ryan Purkiss reported on the 3rd grade
dictionary project that took place right before the kids left
school for their holiday break. Ryan says about 500
dictionaries were given to Visalia 3rd graders from Sunset.
Tami and Denise Cahill reported on their delivery to Crestwood
School . Brian Perry reported on what a great experience he
and Gary Smith had at Cottonwood Elementary… mostly
because they got to see Chappy Lozano in action with the
kids… and in uniform!!! Oh, Patrick does have a way with the
little kiddies! I got the pleasure of delivery with ex-Pres. Mike
C. at Conyer School!
I say “Thumbs Up” to Visalia Sunset! Hoops, Adopt A Family
and the Dictionary Project all in one month??? VSR was a busy
club this holiday season!!! What a giving club!
Laurie Tiesiera took a $100 fine because her hubby, Lonnie
received the 2009 Man of the Year from the Tulare Chamber….
Well deserved! Congratulations to Lonnie… and Laurie!
What’s that saying? Behind every man is a great… what is it?
Past President Laurie T. took over for President Russ, who had
to leave meeting early… Laurie oversaw club elections… which
ended this way: (all voting was unanimous)
President Nominee: Gary Smith
Treasurer: Ryan Purkiss
Secretary: Kristi Bryan
Sergeant At Arms: Rick Kunkleman
Membership Chair: Donn Ritter
Foundation Chair: (OPEN)
Service Chair: Aron Gularte
There are other positions not listed, that were not voted on… a
full list of the 2010-2011 board will be available shortly. If
you are interested in taking over the Foundation Chair from
Ryan, please see President Desch.
Ryan Purkiss was our program at meeting to talk with us about
the Rotary Foundation… what it does and how we play a role
as Visalia Sunset members. Ryan handed out a booklet on
Paul Harris (Rotary founder) and talked about how the
Foundation gives back… in forms of District Simplified Grants
(DSG), scholarships and emergency aid… among many other
ways. The current “Polio Plus” campaign has raised $650
million worldwide so far… Polio eradication is a large part of
the Foundation’s efforts. When an individual member gives
$1000 toward the Foundation, you receive a Paul Harris
Fellow. 33 out of our 44 members have been awarded with a
PH!!!
President-to-be Steve Farnsworth read a “Tiger Holiday Poem”
and Laurie closed out the last meeting of the year… Goodbye
2009… Hello 2010!
If President Russ were there, I’m sure he would have said, “Be
Well!”
Kristi
