Section A. Applicant and Contact Information
Fill in with your specific details
Section B. School Information
Fill in with your specific details
Section C. Project Information
1. Project Name: Marathon Kids running club
2. Two-three sentence summary of project: The Marathon Kids running club program is open to
all participants who are dedicated to reaching the goal of running at least four marathons-worth of
distance (104.8 miles) over the course of the school year. With the support of Coaches, kids will
participate in community-led Kickoff and Finisher events, track their miles and receive rewards for
every marathon completed. The school/parent community will provide social support and healthy
behavior modeling throughout the course of the club’s season.
3. Is this a new project or an enhancement of an existing project? This is a new program for the
school as it relates to Marathon Kids. (If you already have a running club at your school, discuss
how the structure of this run club will improve the outcomes for your participants.)
4. Was the project chosen from our list of resources or designed by your school? The
Marathon Kids running club program is an official KIDS in the GAME resource. Select “Chosen
from KIDS in the GAME’s list of resources.”
5. Will you subcontract with a non-profit organization or deliver the project yourselves? The
school will subcontract with Marathon Kids, which will provide the structure (program framework
and rewards) and support, in the form of Coach training. The school will then be responsible for
implementing its running club on the ground.
6. Name of non-profit and tax ID number: Marathon Kids, 06-1722171
7. Dates of project: fill in with you specific dates. Most school-based clubs choose a 6- or 9-month
program length.
8. Requested GO! Grant amount: multiply the amount of (expected) participants in your running
club by $20 to get this amount. $20 includes the registration cost for participants and minimal
shipping fees.
9. If we are unable to fulfill the requested amount, what is the minimum amount needed:
You need to decide how to answer this: Can your school budget contribute anything to the
$20/child registration fee? Can families? Can you raise money through a healthy school
fundraiser? Will you decide to run the program with specific grades, if less is granted? All of these
will affect your answer.
Section D: Project Description (40 Points)
1. The student population you plan to serve, and why you choose this particular group: Are
you focusing on certain grades, or is it open to anyone in the school that wants to participate?
Pre-K through 12th grades are welcome!
2. Need or challenge your project addresses: The main purpose of Marathon Kids run clubs is to
tackle the physical inactivity/sedentary lifestyle epidemic. Estimates show that only about half the
youth in the United States meet the recommendation to achieve 60 minutes per day of moderate
to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). In the context of evolution, such abrupt change is bringing
about severe consequences. Rapidly rising rates of chronic disease, escalating health care costs
and shorter life spans are all linked to declining levels of physical activity. Chronic illness is now a
leading cause of death in many states, brought on by the dangerous combination of sedentary
lifestyle, poor food choice and deficient food access. By tackling this problem early on, Marathon
Kids Running Clubs help instill long-term behavior adoption that mitigates the effects of the
modern sedentary lifestyle, creating healthier, happier, more active children instead.
3. What objective performance measures will you use to determine positive changes in your
students’ activity levels, fitness, commitment to continue activities: Tracking is at the core of
Marathon Kids programming and takes the form of four mileage and fuel logs. In addition,
Marathon Kids will deliver constant feedback to Coaches that can be used to easily measure the
effectiveness of the specific program as it relates to youth health levels at each school. Add
anything else that you know of that your teachers can implement: using FitnessGram data as a
baseline, polling students on their experience, or tracking their progress, tracking KO and Finisher
event attendance, etc.
4. Resources and tools you will use to structure and implement your project: Marathon Kids
will provide its Coach’s Guide, all rewards/incentives for completing each marathon, virtual/inperson training and program support, and ideas for how to implement the program in the most
successful way possible for the school. Add in other tools you may use.
Section E. Project Activities: (10 points)
1.
Estimated number of students involved: fill in with your specifics
2.
Number of days per week the project will be offered: Fill in with your specifics (Marathon Kids
recommends at least 3 days/week)
3.
Number of hours per week students will be active in the project: Fill in with your specifics.
MK recommends a minimum of twenty minutes each day kids are participating, but more may be
required based on your set up. Once officially, you’ll be given many resources to help set up your
specific goals and plan out your season.
4.
Specific activities offered: Walking fast or running at any pace, around designated route(s)
5.
Facilities to be used: Fill with your specifics: will you be at school, local park, local track, etc.?
6.
Equipment needed for project: The equipment to implement Marathon Kids is minimal - kids will
need shoes and a route to run. Coaches gain access to the Coach’s Club upon official
registration, where they can download helpful club management tools and resources. All of these
resources are included with each club’s registration.
Section F. Project Staffing: (20 points)
1.
Who will help operate your project? Paid staff, volunteers, student aides and why you
chose this particular staffing pattern? Most run clubs have anywhere from 1-5 Pacers who
volunteer their time to keep the club motivated and on track. You also may have volunteers
specifically for your Kickoff and Finisher events.
2.
What training will be offered to project staff? Marathon Kids provides in-depth training via
virtual and on-the-ground strategies to take the club from initial idea to completion. All who are
involved with each run club will be able to participate in all initial and ongoing training as needed.
3.
Who is your champion (project overseer and implementer)? Why was s/he chosen? Fill in
your Coach’s information. Use this section to really sell your Coach’s value to your running club
and why they are the best person for this role. The more motivated/passionate the person, the
better chance for a successful club season, which is what KITG wants to see.
G. Project Sustainability: (15 points)
1.
How will you KEEP IT GOING? Marathon Kids is built on the idea of the social contagion theory.
As kids participate and finish their marathons, receiving rewards along the way, others see it and
are motivated to participate as well. Many run clubs start small, and after a few years turn into
school-wide initiatives. Marathon Kids is committed to updating their materials/tools/offerings
every year to keep the program fresh and exciting for participants. How else will you specifically
keep interest high at your school? Do you have other community sponsors that may be willing to
financially support in the future?
