Resolution 385 Requests to the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC)
ISO/TC 211 recognizes the recommendations from the Joint Advisory Group and
requests the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) to submit to ISO/TC 211 new
work items for revision of the following standards:
Revision of ISO 19125-2:2004 (ongoing)
Revision of ISO 19128:2005
ISO/TC 211 also requests OGC to submit the following OGC specifications to
ISO/TC 211 as New Work Item proposals:
Web Coverage Service
GeoDRM Reference Model. (ongoing)

Question being raised during the WG4 meeting:
Cooperation with OGC
The work on GML is going on in OGC (SWG), but this is not well known in ISO/TC 211.
This issue has been deferred to the JAG meeting, but may also be an issue for the
strategy meeting.
ISO/TC 211 strategy
Should ISO/TC 211 revise its strategi on what kind of standards that should be
worked out?
Does ISO/TC 211 need (to influence) standards like OWS, or should we leave such
standards to OGC?

Potential NWIP’s
During the discussions on Portrayal, two potential work items were proposed:
ISO 19117 Part 2 – Portrayal Service
ISO 19117 Part 3 – Finishing rules
Both Portrayal Service and Finishing Rules are outside the scope of ISO
19117 revision 1.
WG4 welcomes NWIP’s on these issues.

PT-19117 Portrayal report
Meeting Objectives
Review OGC 09-012, Symbology Encoding
Harmonization Engineering Report, April 2009
from OWS-6
OGC compared SE with ISO 19117 Working Draft, January 2009,
IHO and USGS symbology
Engineering report raised some concerns about
19117
Feature schema mapping too complex and not necessary
Too many options forces implementers to accommodate them all
or reduces interoperability
No concept of layers in 19117
Other concerns
STATENS KARTVERK
PT-19117 Portrayal report
Accomplishments
Good participation from wider community than
usual
Main discussion was on the role of schema
mapping functions from geographic features to
portrayal features/objects/symbols?
Developed terminology paper that serves as a
consensus document within project team for
way forward
STATENS KARTVERK
PT-19117 Portrayal report
Feature transformation
Mapping between geographic features and portrayal
objects is fundamental to geographic portrayal
 Functions map from Geographic feature type to portrayal object type.
Symbol is part of the portrayal object type
 Requirement is key to portrayal, in scope of 19117
 How to do these functions outside scope of 19117
Schema to schema mapping should be addressed in a
different standard since it is not unique to portrayal
ISO 19117 will have an extension and conformance level
for “rules-based mapping”
 People can use it but it’s not the only way to map features to portrayal
objects

Topics and surprises
Terms
references must be dated
Check for use and dropped unused (abbrev.)
Topology –
mod 2 rule is wrong
19107 has different 9-matrix (“BIE” not “IBE”)
Annotation text is not portrayal
Lacks specific purpose so is useful for a lot
Explanation needs to added to introduction (?)
Harmonization with SQL/MM
Add “arc strings”
Fix well know text
