Dear Oakhaven Student,
I would like to introduce you to our Student Handbook for 2011 - 12. The Behavior
Expectations, found within the Student Handbook, is critical in providing a sense of order and
responsibility for the Oakhaven community. I hope you will read this document carefully. It is
your responsibility to be familiar with the standards of conduct; ignorance is not an acceptable
response if you violate a policy. The Student Handbook does not constitute the whole of
Memphis City Schools policy concerning students. Therefore, MCS Board Policies is an
equally important reference for policies and expectations.
Best wishes for the year ahead! I hope you will take advantage of every opportunity to enhance
your Oakhaven experience. We are committed to your learning and want you to maximize your
time in middle school. Oakhaven surrounds you with opportunities to challenge your intellect
and to meet people with backgrounds and interests different from your own. Get involved!
Through student organizations and sports programs and student organizations, you have an
opportunity and a responsibility to influence the student culture and experience at OMS.

Uniform Policy
2010-2011
Tops (shirts, blouses) must be white or black with collars and sleeves. Students also have the option of wearing
Oakhaven Middle School maroon or gold shirts that can be ordered/purchased in the main office).





Acceptable styles include Polo or golf-style shirts, Oxford or button-down dress shirts, turtlenecks, and
white blouses with Peter Pan collars.
Long sleeves and short sleeves are both acceptable.
Sleeveless tops are not acceptable.
T-shirts may be worn as undergarments. They must be solid white, khaki, navy blue or black.
Lightweight vests, shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, cardigans, and jackets are permitted as items that may be
worn over the uniform top. They must be white, khaki, navy blue or black.
Bottoms (pants, walking shorts, skirts and jumpers) must be black, khaki or navy blue.




Acceptable pants styles include full-length dress pants, boot cut or straight-legged pants, cargo pants,
straight-legged Capri pants, cropped pants and knee-length walking shorts.
Skirts or jumpers must also be knee-length or longer.
Denim jeans, tight-fitting or baggy pants are NOT acceptable.
Belts, must be worn, fitted at the waist, and be black, khaki, navy blue or white in color (young men and
women alike).
Shoes should not have heels higher than an inch and a half.



All athletic or tennis shoes, as well as boots, are acceptable.
If sandals are worn, they must have a heel strap.
Shoestrings must be the same color as the majority color of the shoe.
Hair-cuts for young men should contain no designs or lettering.
Jewelry can be worn, but must be solid white, khaki, navy blue or black.




No denim material may be worn as uniform clothing.
All uniform clothing must be plain without any manufacturer’s logos, brand names, pictures, or
insignias visible on the clothing.
Heavy coats, heavy jackets and raincoats are not covered by these regulations and are not to be
worn during the school day.
Young men and women must tuck shirt tails inside their pants which are belted at all times with a
black, khaki, navy blue, or white belt.

Attendance Policy
2010-2010
Excused Absences: Students are expected to attend school and be on time each day. Student absence is
excused for the following reasons:





Personal illness of student
Death or serious illness in the immediate family
Validated court appearances of the student
Recognized religious holiday/event
Any unusual cause acceptable to the principal. (These reasons will include school sponsored/sanctioned
activities)
A written notice explaining the absence is required when a student returns to school. The note should be
brought to the attendance office first and then taken to the homeroom teacher.
Unexcused Absences: When a student is absent and does not bring back a signed note from a parent/guardian,
it is recorded as unexcused. We will employ our best efforts to contact the students who are absent from school
without an excuse, and will work with attendance teachers and parents or guardians to maintain regular
attendance at school. Unexcused absences from school will be treated according to state law and MCS Board
policy. Unexcused absences from individual classes will be treated according to our school policies and
procedures.
Tardiness: Students are tardy after 7:30 a.m. but are allowed to report to their homerooms until 7:45 a.m.
Students that arrive after 7:45 a.m. must report to the attendance office with a parent for check -in. A note
from the parent or guardian explaining the tardiness should be presented to the teacher or attendance secretary.
Excessive tardiness, including early dismissals, will result in decreased learning opportunities coupled with
appropriate disciplinary responses.
Make-Up work: Students are allowed to make up work missed as a result of an excused absence. It is the
student’s responsibility to request and submit make up assignments and complete any tests within five school
days after returning from an excused absence. If a student fails to make up the work, the deficiencies will be
averaged with the student’s other grades.

Specific Information

School Times of Operation
The school day, for all students, is from 7:30 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. Students should not arrive on campus before
6:45 a.m. Students will not be allowed to enter the building before 7:15 a.m.
Guidance Services
The Guidance Department is available to help students with academic and/or social-emotional needs. The
guidance counselors can also advise students about their career goals and opportunities. Students who want an
appointment should contact the counselor or ask their homeroom teacher for a referral. Parents may request a
conference by calling the main office to set up an appointment with the guidance counselor.
Bookstore
It is the responsibility of parents to make sure that the student has all necessary supplies and materials needed in
the classroom. The bookstore will operate at the school’s main entrance each morning from 7:15 a.m. until 7:45
a.m. Students should visit the bookstore before going to homeroom.
Lockers
Lockers are provided for all students for a rental fee of $4.00. The combination will be given to the renter and
should be maintained in secrecy. The school is not responsible for any losses resulting from sharing of lockers
and student negligence. The locker is to be used only by the student to whom it is assigned.
Withdrawals
Parents are asked to give the school 24 hours notice if a student is transferring. This will give the teachers and
office personnel time to complete all of the necessary paperwork.
Clubs and Organizations
Membership in school clubs is open to any student who qualifies (regardless of race, sex, religion, or national
origin) and shall be approved or rejected by the Principal after reviewing the goals and purposes. Members of
non-school sponsored clubs may not dress, meet, or in any way demonstrate that any such organizations exists
by bringing its activities or belongings on campus.
Fieldtrips
Students are encouraged to participate with their teachers in the planning of field trips. Students should also be
advised that NO REFUNDS WILL BE GRANTED FOR FIELD TRIPS FOR ANY REASON. It is the
student’s responsibility to make every effort to be present and remain in good standing in order to participate in
field trips for which have been paid.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher Conferences are encouraged but should be scheduled in advance. Please call the school for an
appointment at (901)416-2380. All conferences should be scheduled with the assistance of the Guidance
Counselor. Memphis City Schools designates two days for schools to host parent/teacher conferences. Teachers
may issue a Request for School Conference, which requires a response in person from a parent, guardian, or
written parent designee within 3 school days (72 hours).
The Local Leadership Council
The Local School Council (LSC) is composed of parents, community representatives and school staff. The
council, which meets once every six weeks, is an integral component in the decision-making process of the
school.
Hall Passes
Any student who is out of his/her classroom during regular class time must have an official hall pass. Hall
passes are required for students sent into the hallway for ANY reason.
Telephone Procedures
The telephones in the classroom and office are for school business only and are not available for personal use,
except in case of an emergency. Students are not called from class to answer the telephone. Parents are asked
not to call the office and ask that a message be given to a student. To do so would interrupt instruction. Only
emergency messages will be delivered.
Metal Detector Screening
To promote safety and security of students, faculty and staff; metal detectors will be utilized randomly to
conduct searches of students and their personal belongings. Students are subject to unannounced electronic or
handheld metal screening for weapons.
Visitors
All visitors to the school must report to the main office prior to going to any classroom. The visitor will sign in
and receive a pass.
Athletics
Oakhaven Middle School offers various sporting activities. To be eligible for participation, a student must:

Be in attendance the day of the activity

Maintain a 2.0 GPA (with no failing grades in a core)

Pass a physical examination

Be covered by accident insurance

Have good attendance and conduct
Emergency Procedures
Fire Drill: Fire drills are held periodically throughout the school year. Students will be given instructions as
for what to do in case of a fire and will practice the procedure.
Earthquake Preparedness: Teachers will discuss with students what to expect during an earthquake and the
quake safe actions to take in case of an earthquake.
In the event of a major emergency such as tornado, fire, or an earthquake, the alarm will sound. In case
of a tornado or earthquake, each teacher will bring his/her students to the hallways on the lower level of the
building. The students will be instructed to kneel, put their heads in their laps and cover them with their hands.
They will remain in this position until the “all clear” signal is given.
In case of a fire, teachers will escort students to an assigned location outside of the building. For
accountability, each teacher will carry their roll book to the assigned location and call the roll. Any student
leaving the campus without permission will be severely disciplined in accordance with the MCS Student Code
of Conduct.
Drugs
The possession or use of illegal drugs is a serious violation of municipal, state, and federal law. Students are
required to obey these laws, both on and off the school campus. Students possessing, selling, using, or being
suspected of being under the influence of drugs prohibited by law while on school premises will be suspended,
and the appropriate law enforcement agency will be notified. Violations involving this offense may result in
expulsion.
Graffiti
Students are expected to respect our learning environment. Marking on walls, lockers, ceilings, floors and
school furniture is not permitted. Students should not bring magic markers, whiteout, fingernail polish, or spray
paint to school. These items will be confiscated and discarded.

Use common sense, decency, and manners while in the cafeteria for breakfast or lunch.

Memorize your breakfast/lunch identification number.
Have in your possession the required money needed to purchase food items and refrain from
begging.
Eat your food in a civilized and respectable manner.
Clear your eating area of all trash and discard it in the appropriate receptacle.

Line up in an orderly fashion from the end of the line and advance forward as the line moves ahead.
Demonstrate courtesy and respect to the cafeteria staff.
Touch and handle only your food items during your stay in the cafeteria.
Engage only in conversations with people seated at your table using only a conversational tone and
sound level.
Leave your eating area free of clutter and mess for the next person that will eat there.

Adhere to all cafeteria policies and procedures.
Move from the line to your assigned section and take a seat immediately.

Keep continuous movement in hallways and stairwells.

Arrive to your assigned bus stop early.
Enter the bus in a safe and orderly fashion.
Immediately take a seat and refrain from loud talking or noises.
Remain seated until the bus arrives at its destination and exit in a safe and orderly fashion.
Refrain from eating or drinking on the bus.
Clean up after yourself.
Remove all personal belongings as you exit the bus.

Clear from aisle immediately and take your seat.
Allow others to share the bus seat with you without hesitation or hindrance.

Comply with all components of the MCS Student Code of Conduct as it relates to bus conduct.

“Before and After School”
WE RESPECT OURSELVES.







Arrive to school no earlier than 6:45 am and not later than 7:15am every day.
Make certain your uniform is assembled and worn correctly before entering the building.
Remain on campus once you arrive to the school.
Enter the building through the designated door and move to the cafeteria for breakfast.
Refrain from engaging in any unsafe or disruptive behavior before school.
Go to the restroom, your locker and finally homeroom at the ringing of the 7:20am bell.
Be seated and prepared in homeroom by the ringing of the 7:30am bell.



Leave the premises when dismissed after the ringing of the 2:15pm bell, if you are not involved in
sanctioned after school activities.
Be off of school grounds by 2:30pm.
Demonstrate safety, intelligence, and civility as you proceed home from school.




Display courteous and kind behavior to students as you arrive and depart from school.
Observe regular school expectations and procedures before and after school.
Enter the school in a safe and orderly manner.

Submit parent signed permission slip to appropriate school personnel prior to the deadline for
submission of permission slips.
Submit the correct amount of money to the appropriate school personnel to retain your space on the
trip.
Keep your receipt of payment for the field trip.
Abide by all school rules, particularly before the field trip and comply with those same rules while
attending the field trip.
Place all trash and litter in the proper receptacles.

Refrain from exhibiting any behaviors that are contrary to all general school rules of expectations.
Show common courtesy and respect to fellow students, teachers, and the general public that you will
come in contact with while on the field trip.

data-driven teaching strategies which will afford them a successful
transition into high school. Oakhaven will also be a school that values
