Dear Parents / Carers,
It’s been a peculiar week with only having 3 days at school. I hope the children enjoyed the lovely sunshine
yesterday. Staff were busy with planning and preparation. Some of the staff were busy creating new displays to
promote our dyslexia friendly school status. The school council had a meeting about this earlier in the week.
Please see below for more details.
School Council
The school council have met to discuss Friarswood achieving Dyslexia Friendly status. We spoke about what this
means and how the new signs around the school can help children with dyslexia. The authority SENS team will
be in school in a few weeks to see what we are doing to support children and to look around the school. I will let
you now as soon as we find out about how we got on.
We also discussed how best to use the money which we had originally saved for learning tablets. Children in our
school use the interactive white boards daily and we have been offered a very good price on new interactive
boards which several children can use at once. The school council decided that they would prefer to have these so
that all of the classes would benefit from them rather than having a class set of tablets which would have to be
shared around the school. Again I will keep you updated as to the progress with this.
Sweets in school
Unfortunately a few of the older children seem to be secretly bringing in sweets to school. We are finding out
about this but only when some of the children have let us know. Furthermore, one child has decided to bring in
sweets which look extremely out of date and with random ‘spices’ on them. This has had quite a bad effect on a
few children. Firstly I need to point out that children should not be bringing sweets in for snacks as they are
certainly not healthy. Secondly, some of our children have serious allergies and health problems. Eating
something which isn’t what they think it is could have serious implications on their health. Please can I ask that
you do not allow your children to bring in sweets for snacks. Thank you.
Year 6 SATs
Next week, our Year 6 children will be taking their SATs. They have been busy revising for a long time now and
we wish them all the best. Please can I take this opportunity to ask Year 6 parents to ensure your child has as
calm a weekend as possible and that they go to bed at a time which gives them enough sleep. Please can I also
ask that you ensure your child comes to school on time if not a bit earlier. There are a couple of children who are
usually late and if this happens next week, it will certainly upset your child which could have negative
consequences on their tests. Thank you.
Year 6 children ~ we wish you the best of luck. You will be great!
Data Collection Sheets
Please can I ask that all data collection sheets are returned by Monday 9th May whether you need to alter them or
not. If there are no alterations, please just sign and return. Today I have tried to contact two parents. Both of the
numbers we have in school do not work. Fortunately it was not an emergency. This highlights that we really do
need your data sheets returning with updated information on. It is for the benefit of your child/ren that we have
your contact numbers. Thank you.

Year 2
Just a reminder that in September, the Year 3 uniform is a shirt and tie not a polo shirt. Order forms for the new
uniform are in the main entrance. If you wish to ensure you have new uniform before the Summer holidays,
please order by June 10th. Thank you.
Netball Competition
On Tuesday, our netball team played against Westlands Primary School. The scores for both the first and second
games were 1:1. In the final game, both schools were at 3:3 but in the last 40 seconds Friarswood scored 2 more.
Friarswood won 5:3. A fantastic team effort was made by all of our players. Well done to Mollie, Katie, Lewis,
Libby, Honey, Ellie~Mae and Tegan.
“When we were getting ready to go we had to stand in a line behind Mollie and say three cheers for Westlands
and they did the same to us. We all shook hands and said good game.” By Ellie~Mae.
Tennis Tournament
On Wednesday, Alexzandra, Toby, Miles and Alice took part in a tennis tournament at Keele University. They
played against five other schools. The children drew 3 games and won 2 which meant they came overall second.
All of the children received a silver medal and certificate. Well done to our tennis players.
School Nurse
In the next couple of months the school nurse will be in school quite a lot. She will be taking the height and
weight measurements of Reception and Year 6 children. This goes towards government statistics. She will also
be in school for many classes to discuss with the children about health and well-being as well as growing older
and body changes which we all have to go through at some point! The talks are always age-appropriate and
respectful. Letters will be sent to the relevant parents nearer to the time.
