Discrete Math Course Expectations
TEACHER: Mr. Mark Mattia
EMAIL: [email protected]
TIME & LOCATION: Period 5 Pt #23 PHONE: 941-486-2001
Student Assistance Hours: I am generally available to help Students Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from
1:30 – 2:00PM. In portal 23. Please make appointment in advance with me.
Thank you for choosing Discrete Math this year. This is an important subject for those going on to
study Mathematics and also Computer Science. Many aspects of modern Computer Science are built on the
foundational mathematics found in Discrete Math.
There are a few expectations that I have for this course that are contained in this document.
NOTE to PARENTS: Emails are the best way to reach me. Emails will be responded to within 24 hours.
TEXT: The text is Discrete Mathematics with Applications 4th Edition, by Epp. Books are handed out to
the students in week 1 and will have to be turned in after the Final Exam is completed in May. Failure to return the
book results in a significant book charge to the student.
MATERIALS: Graphing Calculator (TI-84 Plus), 3-ring binder with college ruled lined paper. Binder for
organizing worksheets.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Discrete Math is a Duel Enrollment Course and meets both the Area II
requirements and both the A.A. General Education Requirements and the A.S. General Education Requirements.
This course is a proof oriented approach to and applications of propositional logic, sets, functions, relations,
combinatorics, graphs and trees.
TECHNOLOGY: Students may use personal devices during class for educational purposes ONLY. Cell phones are
not to be ON or OUT at any point during class time. Please become familiar with the Pine View Technology User
Policies.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS:
All students will be expected to:
ATTEND CLASS - Be on time, be prepared, be organized, actively participate in class, and manage their time.
Employability is based on these aspects.
BE RESPECTFUL - Follow all school rules and not disrupt their fellow classmates during class time
ESTABLISH WORK HABITS - Consistent timely, thoughtful, careful completion of all work accompanied by
independent study will be mandatory for success.
HONOR CODE: Academic honesty is fundamental. I will enforce the Pine View Honor Code. If applicable
referrals to the High School Honor Code Council will be made.
HOMEWORK: Homework is an essential part of success in a mathematics class, and will be assigned as required.
The purpose of homework is to develop individual and independent skills in understanding and communicating
mathematics. There is not an overwhelming amount of Homework and the assignments are paced well. Each evening
the student should read the section in the text that is relevant. Students should complete the homework assignment
AND correct their answers to odd questions using the book as required for each homework assignment. Students are
encouraged to “problem solve” questions with their classmates, however it is a rigid expectation that each student does
their own work.
EVALUATION:
GRADE: the total number of points earned through various assignments will determine your grade. Points are
earned through: Employability (Homework, Attendance and Participation), Tests/Quizzes, Final Exam and
Project(s).
The following weighting system will be utilized to calculate the Final grades:
Assessments (Tests): 50%
Employability including Homework: 20%
Final: 25%
Project(s): 5%
For 1st Semester there will not be a Mid-Term.
The weights for the individual quarters will mirror the overall weighs with the exception that
there is no “Final” each quarter. Therefore the weighting for the year will be 37.5% (Sem 1),
37.5% (Sem 2), 25% Final)
Assessments and graded assignments are generally returned to the student within 2 days after completion but the
instructor reserves the right to have up to five school days to return the grade to the student. The final
exam can take up to several days to grade.
Typically EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS are not given; emphasis should be placed on daily, consistent
studying and practicing of the concepts. There may be an opportunity for a couple of extra points, however,
toward the end of the year and through successful completion of projects.
QUIZZES & TESTS: Students will take approximately 1 test for every chapter or 2, more or less often as
needed. ALL Tests and Quizzes will be announced,
If You Are Absent: It is the student’s responsibility to make up all work missed when absent.
CHECK online and on the board for assignments. Tests generally may not be made up during
class time, and the student must make an appointment to take them at another time. For
tests, students will be given one day to make up the test for each day they are absent.
Period 7 is the preferred time to make up a Quiz or Test. Habitual missing of tests will not
be tolerated and will result in a parent conference.
For Homework/Worksheet problems that are being collected and graded, students generally
(unless specifically told not to) can work with other students and utilize other sources of study
but must submit all the work on their own and show all the work (not just the answers) to get full
credit. Any work that copies answers directly from a website will be discarded with zero
credit.
