Small Sided Hockey Rules and Regulations
1. Fixtures
1.1 All fixtures, league tables and results can be accessed via our fixtures administration system, SportPAD. Visit http://leeds.sportpad.net//
1.2 All fixtures for semester 1 will be done in advance of the leagues starting and will be viewable via SportPAD.
1.3 ALL fixtures must be fulfilled. Teams will not be allowed to cancel fixtures except in extreme circumstances and following the necessary
procedure (see point 2.4)
1.4 When fixtures are cancelled due to bad weather, a decision will be made by the facility staff as early as possible. When an early decision is
possible, all team captains will be informed via email and a message posted on the SportPAD homepage. When an early decision isn’t
possible, it is the responsibility of the team captain to ring Weetwood Sports Park on 0113 275 1347 to confirm if the fixture is cancelled.
1.5 All fixtures cancelled due to weather will be rescheduled for the catch up weeks at the end of the semester if possible.
2. Failure to Attend (FTA)
2.1 All fixtures MUST be fulfilled on the date scheduled. Games will not be rescheduled for teams who are not able to field a team for a fixture.
2.2 A 3 strike policy will operate for teams who repeatedly fail to attend (FTA)
Concede game with advance warning
1. Warning given to offending team and walkover of 10-0 awarded to opposition
2. Offending team deducted 1 point from the league and walkover awarded to opposition
3. Team immediately removed from league with no refund given
Concede game without advance warning
1. Warning given to offending team and walkover of 15-0 awarded to opposition
2. Offending team deducted 3 points from the league and walkover awarded to opposition
3. Team immediately removed from league with no refund given

2.3 Where a team fails to attend a fixture without emailing [email protected] and without contacting the opposition’s captain by the Friday
12pm before the fixture, the offending team must also pay a £15 fine to cover the travel expenses of the opposition. If this fine is not paid to
Rachel in the Sport Office in the Student Union before the next fixture, the team will automatically be removed from the league with no registration
fee refund.
2.4 If a team informs the opposition and [email protected] of their inability to fulfil a fixture by the deadline day/time, the £15 fine will not
apply but the 3 strike policy will still be enforced.
3. Free Gryphon Sport Pass
3.1 Due to changes in cost of sport it is no longer necessary for all team members to purchase a minimum of a sports pass membership. Instead,
all registered team members will receive the new free “Gryphon Sport Pass” automatically put onto their student card; this will enable you to have
access to the pitches for fixtures.
4. Squad
4.1 All social small sided hockey teams must have a minimum of 10 players registered in order to participate in the league.
4.2 On any given fixture, a maximum squad size of 8 players is permitted.
4.3 The squad must be finalised before the first league games (Sunday 16th October) and each individual player must have registered their
details on http://sport.leeds.ac.uk/sport/social-leagues/ by 12pm on Monday the 3rd of October. Without registering online, you will not receive the
Gryphons Sport Pass meaning you will not have access to the facilities for your fixtures.
Failure to meet these deadlines will jeopardise a team’s place in the league
4.4 Players can be added into a squad at any point, however it can take up to 1 week for a new player to be registered so please take this into
consideration.
4.5 To register a new player the captain must contact Rachel ([email protected]) informing who it is, and the new player must also
register their details online via http://sport.leeds.ac.uk/sport/social-leagues/.The captain will then be informed by Rachel when the new player is
registered and able to play.
5. Punctuality
5.1 Matches should begin at 17:00 and 18:00

5.2 Teams not ready to kick off by 10 minutes after the official kick-off time, will concede a goal to the opposition, with one further goal being
awarded for every three additional minutes they are late. This will be overseen by the referee.
5.3 A team may kick-off with less than five players, though a minimum of three is required.
7. Booking Space for Training
7.1 The MUGA pitches at Weetwood can be booked for training if desired but no block bookings are permitted so the normal Sport & Physical
Activity casual booking procedure must be followed (see points 7.2-7.4) and casual booking Terms & Conditions apply.
7.2 Captains of each society team are the only people who will be allowed to book facilities for training.
7.3 These bookings can be made up to two weeks in advance through our Reception team:

7.4 When making a booking for a social training session, the booking must be made under captain’s name and the social team name must also
be given.
7.5 There is no guarantee that space will be available and bookable. It will be done on a first come, first served basis.
Declaration

by these rules or face possible removal from the league.

The Rules of Small Sided Hockey
The Rules are as follows:
“The rules are the appropriate rules of hockey except for the following….”
Player numbers and pitch dimensions
1. This is a five a-side game with no goalkeepers or kicking backs and up to three replacements.
2. The playing area will measure 29m wide by 55m long.
Scoring
3. At each end, there will be a ‘scoring zone’ 15m from the baseline of the pitch and running across the full width of the pitch. Goals may only be scored
from within this zone. In order to score players must hit the back board.
Restarts, corners and free-hits
In the case of any restart being awarded, all players must be at least 5 metres away from the ball carrier.
4. Restart - (equivalent of a ‘16’ hit) - If the ball has travelled over the baseline and was last hit by the attacking team then play restarts with the
opposition in possession on the scoring zone line, in-line with where the ball went out of play.
5. Restart - (equivalent of a long corner) – If the ball has travelled over the baseline and was last hit by the defending team then play restarts with the
opposition in possession on the scoring zone line, in-line with where the ball went out of play. The ball must then travel five metres before a shot can
be taken.
6. For any free-hit or restart in the scoring zone, the ball must travel five metres before a shot can be taken.
7. Penalty corners will be replaced by ‘challenges’.

Time and play is stopped.
All other players must position themselves on the half way line.
The ball carrier starts with the ball half way between the scoring zone line and the half-way line, in line with the goal.
The player defending the challenge may start anywhere in the scoring zone (but must be 5m from the attacking player) and may only use their stick to
stop the ball (like a 1v1 scenario).

As soon as the ball carrier plays the ball, the players on the half way line are permitted to re-engage with the game, attempt to play the ball and play
continues as normal.

8. The match duration will be four periods of six minutes each. There will be a one minute ‘tactical’ break at the end of periods one, two and three.
Teams will change ends at the end of period two.
Variations
1. Different time periods – Should the match organisers wish to adjust the length of time to be played it is suggested that six minute periods are added
or removed as necessary. It is suggested that a minimum of two periods are played and a maximum of six.
Officiating
The number officials for the game will be determined by the match organiser.
It is intended that for practice games this format can be self-officiated however it is recommended that if possible there is at least one ‘game-manager’ who
will:

Facilitate the game.
Time each period.
Call fouls if they have not been ‘self-awarded’ by players.

Advise on the rules.
For competitions it will be possible to play with one umpire although it is recommended that there are two umpires per game.
Setting up the pitch
It is recommended that when setting up the pitch, lines that are already marked are utilised wherever possible. Where lines are not marked then throw-down
lines should be used. These can be put down with gaps between them to indicate where the line is. These should be used for side-lines and across the pitch
to mark the line of the scoring zone.
There should be a 2 metre ‘run-off’ area between each pitch. If possible, a low barrier should be placed down the centre of the ‘run-off’ area running parallel
to the side-line of the pitch. This is to stop balls running on to the adjacent pitch.


To mark out the three pitches place and you have flood lights, place throw down markers in line with the central two flood lights as opposed to
measuring out 29m.
To mark out the scoring zones on each pitch place throw down lines in line with the edge of the ‘D’.
Appendix 1 – Pitch Dimensions
The following diagram demonstrates the suggested pitch dimensions for the 55x29m format that has been selected. It shows how it overlays on to a standard
hockey pitch. The cones at the edge of the pitch denote the scoring zone.
