This Neolithic era began about 12,000 years ago and marked the start of agriculture (Coon 2014). Since the beginning of human 8.5 seconds evolution, people have been creating ways to change plants to be fit for human food consumption. “Agriculture” By Jai79 is licensed under CC0 According to Chassy a writer of the cereal foods journal “Someone started saving seeds from the relatively rare stalks that did all pop at once, and replanted them. It worked, and agriculture was born” (Chassy 2007). “Field, Rye” By AnnaER is licensed under CC0 12 seconds “Evolution, Charles Darwin” By Clker-FreeVector-Images is licensed under CC0 Black slide Less traveling and foraging for food meant more time for the cultural evolution of the human species. As a result, human intelligence and intentionality increased almost exponentially and allowed the innovation of the domestication and genetic alteration of plants and animals. Gregor Mendel was the first person to find an explanation for what farmers were performing to cultivate crops. 21 seconds “Brain, Science, Biology” By geralt is licensed under CC0 7 seconds “Gregor_Mendel” By AndreaLaurel is lincensed under CC by 2.0 Through the selective crossbreeding of common pea plants over many generations, Mendel established the laws governing the heritability through traits. 11 seconds “Tuberous Lathyrus” By Pezibear is licensed under CC0 Years later, Charles Darwin coined the term hybridization due to his observations of numerous species around the world. Darwin also found variations based on specific locations, leading him to believe that they had gradually evolved from common ancestors. Both of the discoveries made by Mendel and Darwin were scientific terms and methods of techniques that were already in practice for thousands of years by our ancestral cultivars. 19 seconds “Charles Robert Darwin” By WikiImages is licensed under CC0 13 seconds “Ukraine, science, selection” By Voffka is licensed by CC0 As said by coon, a researcher and writer for the humanist “It wasn’t natural selection, it was intentional. It seems to me that if there is a force or principle that 15 seconds operates to make an important evolutionary change happen. ” (Coon 2014). The industrial revolution was the next major discovery that greatly affected food. 6 seconds The innovations of steel mills, tractors, and other agricultural machinery “reduced the need for labor, improved seeds, and synthetic fertilizer” (Chassy 2007). 10 seconds Before the discovery of DNA, 22 seconds our ancient ancestors have been altering plant and animals’ genetic makeup prior to the most modern technology. Scientist such as Mendel and Darwin have founded terms, theories, and added a scientific method to the technique ancient farmers coined during the start of the Neolithic Era. Agriculture and the perfecting of 13 seconds farming allowed people to not only get smarter and create even more food consumption innovations, but also increase in number as a specie population.
