Best Practice for App Accessibility

Best Practice for App Accessibility
1. Simplicity – Keep the layout
and interface design as simple
as possible. The simpler the
design, the easier it is to see and
recognize things.
2. Continuity – Make sure the
app is consistent throughout,
including font, layout and
symbols. This is more user
friendly and helps users to
navigate the app quicker.
3. Text size – Make all text as big
as you can, however you can
and wherever you can.
4. Bold text – Make all text as
bold as you can, however you
can and wherever you can.
5. Colour contrast – Let users
choose from more than one
user-friendly colour contrast
option. By choosing the
preferred contrast, the user will
be able to see the app much
more clearly and therefore use
the app for a longer period of
time.
6. Clutter-free – Keep the screen
as clear as possible.
Overloading the screen with
icons and images can make the
app very busy and
disorientating.
7. Symbol/Icon shape – Vary the
shape and style of
symbols/icons, ensuring no two
similarly shaped symbols/icons
are next to each other. This
helps users to identify a
symbol/icon more easily.
8. Symbols/Icons – The
symbol/icon should always
represent its function as clearly
and simply as possible. Familiar
and well-known symbols/icons
can help the user to identify
features more quickly.
9. Compatible with zoom – Make sure that the app is compatible
with any in-built zoom function (such as Apple). This makes the
app even more accessible.
10. Compatible with voiceover - Make sure that the app is
compatible with any in-built voiceover function (such as Apple’s
Siri). Make sure all buttons and headings are tagged correctly,
clearly and are relative.
