Toward a Green, Healthy, Vision Zero
• Increased walking and biking are strongly associated with
decreased obesity and diabetes rates.
• Cities with higher numbers of pedestrian and bicycle commuters
experience lower crash injuries and fatalities per mile traveled.
• Philadelphia’s bicycle commute rate has more than doubled in
recent years without an increase in the number of crashes.
• Much more can be done to increase the safety and attractiveness
of walking and biking in Philadelphia, and these changes will hold
promise for improving the city’s health.
