We, the members of the Drake University Student Senate, in accordance with our duties and
bylaws, do hereby pledge our support for the organization I Am That Girl (IATG) and grant them all
the rights and privileges of a full University organization.

MOTION SS [161013] – A; I Am That Girl Approval
To approve the recommendation made by the Student Affairs Committee (SAC), in accordance
with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate.
1.
Whereas, it is the duty of the Student Senate to confirm the approval of new organizations
at Drake University;
2.
Whereas, the I Am That Girl purpose of IATG is to empower young women through
meaningful conversations about the issues we face everyday by working to build tangible
community, inspire genuine conversation, encourage self-confidence, and create healthy
media through chapter meetups and execution of community service projects;
3.
Whereas, I Am That Girl is to provide a space on campus where women can connect
through discussing the dynamic and challenging topics that college students experience;
4.
Whereas, I Am That Girl To collaborate with other organizations on campus that also
promote student engagement and growth in mind, body, and spirit;
Now, therefore, be it
Moved. That I Am That Girl be recognized as a full and official organization of the Student Senate,
with all the rights and privileges thereof.
We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves
student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to
students, do hereby move that $190.00 be allocated to Chess Club to cover software costs associated with
a chess engine.

MOTION SS [161013] – B; Chess Engine Software
To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance
with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate.
1.
Whereas, the mission of Chess Club is to teach and play chess with anyone with interest in the
sport who resides in the Des Moines community;
2.
Whereas, this software will allow players to analyze their strategy in an effort to better hone
their skills;
3.
Whereas, chess has been proven to improve decision making and cognitive functioning;
4.
Whereas, the software will be utilized for years to come;
5.
Whereas, the software will allow players to compare their games to chess masters;
6.
Whereas, Chess Club is open to the Student Body;
7.
Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Drake University Student Life Handbook;
Now therefore, be it:
Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $190.00 to Chess Club to cover software costs
associated with a chess engine.
We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves
student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to
students, do hereby move that $2000.00 be allocated to FOCUS to cover transportation costs associated
with SEEK 2017.

MOTION SS [161013] – C; SEEK 2017
To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance
with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate.
1.
Whereas, the mission of FOCUS is to know Jesus Christ and fulfill His Great Commission by
encountering students in friendship where they are, inviting them into a personal relationship
with Jesus Christ, and accompanying them as they pursue lives of virtue and excellence;
2.
Whereas, the main goal of SEEK is to provide an opportunity to college students to experience
growth in their faith, character, and personal development outside of the academic calendar;
3.
Whereas, FOCUS is only asking Student Senate to cover part of the bussing cost;
4.
Whereas, most of the money for the other expenses associated with the conference are being
fundraised;
5.
Whereas, between 50-100 students will attend the conference through Drake;
6.
Whereas, the conference is in San Antonio on January 3rd, 2017;
7.
Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Drake University Student Life Handbook;
Now therefore, be it:
Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $2000.00 to FOCUS to cover transportation costs
associated with SEEK 2017.
We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves
student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to
students, do hereby move that $2,099.50 be allocated to DU Spoken Word to cover hotel, registration, and
travel costs associated with College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational.

MOTION SS [161013] – D; Spoken Word Invitational
To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance
with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate.
1.
Whereas, The mission of DU Spoken Word is to bring the power of spoken word poetry to the
Drake Campus and the greater Des Moines area;
2.
Whereas, this will be the first team Drake University sent a team to this competition;
3.
Whereas, the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational is a national competition;
4.
Whereas, the invitational is at the University of Illinois - Chicago;
5.
Whereas, the competition is in April 2017;
6.
Whereas, the deadline for registration is in December;
7.
Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Drake University Student Life Handbook;
Now therefore, be it:
Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $2,099.50 to DU Spoken Word to cover hotel,
registration, and travel costs associated with College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational.
We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in recognition of the student body referendum
process, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to acknowledge the stances and desires
of all students through the petition process for advocacy and equity in civic engagement, do hereby present
the following:

To approve the recommendation made by the student body, in accordance with the referendum procedures
of the Drake University Student Senate.

Whereas, Drake students are eager to exercise their rights and participate in the political process
Whereas, Drake University had 81% student voter registration in year and is seeking to increase
that percentage this election season.
Whereas, during the previous Iowa Caucus, a number of students were unable to exercise their
right to caucus due to academic conflict
Whereas, Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, Clemson University, and University
Central Michigan University has adopted similar procedures
Whereas, Drake University’s mission statement seeks to prepare students to be responsible global
and engaged citizens
Whereas, in order for a industrialized democracy to properly and effectively function, voter
participation ought to be maximize
Now therefore be it,
Resolved, that Drake University Student Senate along with the support of Drake University Student Body
recognizes the importance and necessity of having caucus and voting day off to provide students with
unhindered opportunity to exercise their civic rights.
And therefore be it,
Further resolved, that Drake University Student Senate along with the support of Drake University Student
Body supports this referendum.
We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support the overall functioning of the
University, and to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable
experience to students in culmination with experience with the Student Senate, do hereby move to approve
the following appointment-nominations by the Executive Members of the Drake University Student Senate
for all standing University Committees in which student members are eligible to serve.
MOTION SS [160901] – F; Creation of the Multicultural House Ad Hoc Committee
To approve the recommendation made by the Vice President of Student Life, in accordance with Rules and
Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate.
1.
Whereas, multicultural organizations are working towards cultivating an inclusive campus climate.
2.
Whereas, multicultural houses are an essential part of the multicultural experience on campus.
3.
Whereas, this group will work in conjunction with UNITY and other student organizations and
University officials to create a plan for the remodel of the multicultural houses.
4.
Whereas, multicultural houses are open to all multicultural organization for uses for equity and
inclusion programing.
5.
Whereas, the Multicultural House Ad Hoc Committee will be chaired by the Equity and Inclusion
Senator and will consist of four other elected members of the Student Senate;

Moved. That the following people nominated by the Student Senate, in accordance with the Rules and
Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate, be elected to serve on the Multicultural House Ad Hoc
Committee for the 30th Session of the Drake University Student Senate:
