Drew Bell Larry Courville Kirk MacDonald Andy Scott Sean Berberich, ATC Jason MacDonald Mark Thompson READING ROYALS PLAYER BIOGRAPHIES HEAD COACH LARRY COURVILLE Position: Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Age: 41 (04-02-75) Home Town: Timmins, Ontario; Resides: Palmyra, Pennsylvania This marks Larry Courville’s eighth full season as the head coach and director of hockey operations for the Royals—and his ninth season leading the team, as he took over the reigns mid-season in 2008-09 (January 6, 2009). Over his first seven full seasons as the Royals’ coach, Courville, who is currently the longest tenured active coach in the ECHL, has won more regular season games than any other coach in the league during that time span. On March 13, 2016, in a 1-0 victory over the Adirondack Thunder at historic Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York, Courville became the ninth coach in ECHL history to record his 300th win in the league. The 305 victories (305-187-50; .609 win percentage) that Coach Courville has recorded for the Royals places him ninth all-time in the league. His 542 total games coached is tenth all time. In fact, there are only two coaches in league history who have coached more games than Coach Courville and have a higher win percentage (Jason Christie = .612; and Malcolm Cameron = .631). Courville, who has led the Royals to forty or more wins in four of his seven seasons with the Royals, has compiled twenty or more wins on the road over the last six consecutive years. During that stretch, the Royals have gone 150-91-28 (.610). (Overall, Courville’s team have gone 154-96-22=.607 on home ice.) Courville is the all-time team leader in games coached (542) and wins (305). His .609 win percentage is second to Derek Clancey, who coached the team from 2003-04 (80-47-17 = .615). Courville’s most notable season with Reading to date may be 2012-13 when he and his players not only established the team record for most wins (46) (tied in 2013-14), but also set team records for fewest losses (19), most points in the standings (99), and highest win percentage (.688). That team, of course, advanced to win the Kelly Cup Championship. Courville, who has led the Royals to the playoffs in all seven of his full seasons as the team’s head coach, is seventh all-time in league history with 77 post-season games coached. His 42 playoff wins is eighth all-time. Courville is the sixth coach in the twelve year history of the team. He took the head coaching reigns of the Royals mid-way in the 2008-09 season, on January 6, 2009, when the team had a record of 9-23-2. In the final 38 games of that regular season, the Courvilleled Royals went 15-19-4. Since that time Courville’s teams have collectively gone 122 games over .500 (290-168-46), which translates into a .621 win percentage. During that time span, the Royals have won two regular season conference titles (2012-13 and 2013-14) and three regular season division titles (2010-11, 2012-13, and 2013-14). This stint with the Royals is the first pro head coaching assignment for Courville, who served as the general manager, facility director, and hockey operations supervisor of a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, ice rink for over two years after completing his final full season as a player in 2006. 1 With respect to his playing career, Courville, a third round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 1995, played in more than 600 pro hockey games, including 33 in the National Hockey League with the Canucks. During his playing career, Courville, who served as team captain during no fewer than six of his nine full-time playing seasons, racked up over three hundred points and a thousand penalty minutes. He was named as the team’s Most Valuable Player for the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League in 1996-97. Prior to turning pro, Courville, who originally hails from Timmins, Ontario, was twice a member of Team Canada Gold Medal championship teams in international play, including the 1995 World Junior U-20 Championship, during which he played an integral role on his home country’s team that went undefeated during the world’s premiere amateur tournament. Courville played all or parts of five different seasons with the Royals, starting with a short stint during the team’s inaugural year (2001-02) and culminating with ten games played on an ‘as-needed’ basis during the 2007-08 season. In addition to earning the respect of his teammates and the admiration of the fans in Reading for his gritty and relentless style of play, Courville also received the Royals’ Unsung Hero Award at the conclusion of the 2004-05 season and the team’s Heart Award in 2005-06. On October 22, 2006, Courville became the first person ever inducted into the Reading Eagle Wall of Honor at the Sovereign Center, which honors members of the Royals’ organization who have made signficant contributions to the success of the team. Perhaps not surprisingly, on the day that he was inducted into the Wall of Honor, Courville dressed for an undermanned Royals’ team and played an instrumental part in the 5-3 victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots. His efforts that day included scoring a late-game goal to ice the team’s win. On October 30, 2011, while in his role as the team’s head coach, Courville became the first former player in team history to have his number (#22) retired by the team. Larry and his wife, Shannon, and their two young daughters (MaKenna and Morgan) and young son (Mason), currently reside in Palmyra, Pennsylvania.
