Welcome to Kindergarten

Welcome to Mrs. Dennison’s Class!
Families- Welcome to second grade! Please read this newsletter. There are
important details about our classroom inside. Please sign the last sheet and return
it to school as soon as possible as well as returning the getting to know your child
sheet. Have a great day!

Parent-Teacher Communication
Daily Folders- Your child has a blue daily folder that must come to school
everyday. I will do my best to keep you informed of what is going on in our
classroom by sending home weekly classroom newsletters, Fairfax
newsletters, notes, and your child’s classroom work all in the daily folder.
There will be a “school” side and a “home” side. Please empty the home side
in the folder every night to make room for more news to come home. It will
have the quarterly behavior chart in the back. The students record and keep
track of their behavior each night. Please initial any days that are in the
yellow or red.
Notes from home- Place all notes, school forms, lunch money, scholastic
book orders, etc. in the daily folder labeled with your child’s first and last
name and put it on the “school” side. If you are sending in lunch money,
please place it in an envelope with your child’s name on it.
**** If you have a change in plans for dismissal, you MUST send in a note or
call the school, so the office and I are notified of this change. If a note or
phone call is not received, your child will go home as noted on the dismissal
schedule that was filled out at the beginning of the year. Your child’s safety
is my top priority.
Contacting Me- The best way to contact me is to email me at
[email protected] . I usually check my email a few times during the day.
Please allow me 24 hours to respond back to an email. If you would like to call me,
Fairfax Elementary School’s phone number is 440-255-7223. If it is during the day,
please leave me a message with the secretaries, and I will get back to you as quickly as
possible.
 Conferences are scheduled on “Meet the Teacher” night (September 6th). They
will be at the end of the first quarter.
Homework- Starting the second week of school, your child will begin to receive homework.
My definition: homework is an extension of our day. It is generally a drill, review, or
reinforcement. It helps your child develop both responsibility and independence.
I will also send a homework assignment sheet home on Mondays with the
assignments for the week. Homework will be assigned Monday through
Thursdays. There is no homework on weekends.
Provide your child with a quiet place to work. (Homework should not be
completed in a moving vehicle!)
Show an interest in what your child is doing. Be available for assistance, but
please encourage independence. Offer to look over any written work.
Silent reading and study homework is homework! Students should be reading
silently or to an adult at least 3 times a week for a minimum of 15 minutes.
Packing book bags the night before is helpful.
If your child is frustrated or uncooperative about completing a homework
assignment, stop and write me a note. There is no point in trying to get
work from a child who is upset or overtired.
Discipline
Our classroom rules are the following:
1. Follow directions.
2. Keep hands, feet, and belongings to yourself.
3. Raise your hand before talking.
4. Always use kind words.
5. Take care of property.
When rules are being broken in the classroom, each child will receive a warning about the
broken rule. Everyone makes mistakes so we will all be given a warning first. If the rule is
broken again, your child will be asked move their pin. Each child is given a pin, always
starting on green (ready to learn). A green card represents a child having a great day. A
blue card means a good day. A yellow card means a rule has been broken and a consequence
will be given. A red card means the child had a rough day and had a hard time following
directions. A note home or a phone call will be made. Purple means AWESOME DAY!! They
went above and beyond.
Each day your child will bring home their folder and on the back they will color their color
for the day. If you child has a yellow or red box colored, please initial the box.
Parties:

In second grade we celebrate the regular parties (Halloween, Christmas, and
Valentines Day.) Our center is very crowded therefore only 3 parent volunteers
are needed to help with the party. This will be decided by the homeroom
parent.

Birthdays
*You are welcome to send in a treat for your child’s birthday. If your child
has a summer birthday, we will celebrate the half birthday. Always send in
enough for 20 in the class. Please be sure to avoid products with peanuts
or that have been processed in a peanut plant.
Related Arts Schedule:
Monday- Music
Tuesday- Gym
Wednesday- Technology
Thursday- Library
Friday- Art
Silent Reading- We will have silent reading every day after lunch. Students can bring a
book from home, use their library book, or borrow one of mine.
Meet the teacher is September 6th. You can sign up for conferences then.
Thank you for taking the time to read the following information. If you have any questions
or need any clarification, please do not hesitate to ask. Please sign the paper below and
return it back to me as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Dennison
