F5B – Annex 3
Contestant Instructions for NeuMotors Watt-Minute
Telemetry System with R/C Receiver Backup
Version 3.09, 29 February 2016
General Description : The Airborne Telemetry Transceiver (ATT) is designed to transmit Motor-On
/Motor-Off information from the Model to the Ground Display Gassensor Transducer (GDGT) when
current is flowing to the speed control. The current sensor works both directions so the positive
battery lead can either male or female 6 mm connector. The spare R/C Receiver bound to the
Contestant’s transmitter quickly takes over the Motor-On/Motor-Off function in case of telemetry
signal loss. Another function of the ATT is to transmit total Watt-Minutes beginning 1.5 seconds
after Motor-Off. Watt-Minutes are stored in the ATT are not misplaced in case of signal loss or outof-range condition. Each RF message is keyed with the ATT’s NODE ID number and error checked
with a word checksum. If the RF message is missing or damaged for a period of time, the GDGT
display will indicate “N” for Null for RF Motor Status and same for RC Motor Status if the R/C
pulse is lost. We think failsafe settings for throttle of spare R/C Receiver be low/off as well as for the
Receiver in the model!
Using ATTs in a Contest : ATTs are made with an RF Channel and NODE ID corresponding to the
table below. If (2) models are brought to the flight line, they must have NODE_IDs using the same
RF channel. Telemetry from either the primary or backup model are correctly received when the
backup model replaces the primary model following FAI rule. Contest officials should know of
NODE IDs given to contestants and should plan flight order so that the same RF Channel is not
operated at once by 2 contestants. In the case of a major championship with reverse rank flight order,
it may be required to collect and reissue some ATTs between rounds to account for new flight order
and channel spacing.

Preparing the Model by Adding Ground Wire to Speed Control : An additional ground wire is
needed for ATT operation. Solder a 22 or 20 AWG wire to the negative position of the speed control
or speed control negative battery lead long enough to reach the wing opening. Solder a 2 mm female
barrel connector to this lead. Apply heat shrink insulating material leaving just the end of the barrel
open.
Installing the ATT (Figure 2) in a Model : Make a 3 mm hole in the bottom of the fuselage 6.5 cm
from back of wing opening. Use provided 2 mm X 20 cm hard plastic tube to guide ATT
transmitting antenna out of fuselage. Insert tube from fuselage hole and feed until seen in wing
opening. Slip antenna into tube and guide transmitter in place pulling tube out of fuselage while
pushing ATT into the back of the fuselage. When coax cable comes out, pull 3 to 5 cm more. Tape
coax along bottom of fuselage, the uncovered 18 cm antenna should move freely.
Connect the Current/Voltage sensor (Figure 1) in series with the 6 mm positive speed control lead in
the nose of the model. Connect the 2 mm male ground pin of the sensor to the speed control ground
lead. Position the flat ribbon wire connecting the sensor to the transmitter along the bottom or side of
the fuselage securing with bits of tape. Extra ribbon wire is pushed into the back of the model.
14
Operating the ATT : Install flight battery into model. Connect battery positive Lead to ATT current
sensor and the battery negative lead to speed control negative lead. The ATT transmitter will emit a
continuous buzz sound for 5 seconds, then a further buzz for ½ second every 2 seconds. Complete
assembly of the model.
Calibrating the ATT to the GDGT and GASSENSOR : For preparation, the Contestant should give
his spare receiver to the organizers and give “Throttle High” and “Throttle Low” from his transmitter
when asked. He should also confirm the NODE_ID of his ATT is correct as known to the
Organizers. Then the model power should be switched on and he should provide a 1 ± .5 second
motor run in a safe manner. The organizers should verify that the GDGT Watt-Minute display shows
“00000” which verifies system ready and the 2 minute working time may start. This motor run does
not add to the 1750 WM.
Using a GDGT for Pilot Information : Any GDGT can show real time WM information.
Power is applied by either the “GAS” labeled R/C plug (4.6 to 5.5 volts DC) or 2S lipo port (8.4
volts ) or via standard USB, but only 1 ! . After a short message indicating F5B GDGT and Version
3.09, the display will show number of flights in LOGFILE then ask the Primary Model’s NODE ID.
SEL(ect) moves the cursor, UP/DN changes the value and ENT keeps the value after all digits are
set. One or (2) digit NODE IDs are right justified with leading 0 (s). NODE_ID 3 would look like
“003” .This number must match the NODE ID of the ATT in the model to be watched. After ENT is
pressed, you will be asked to enter the Backup Model’s NODE ID and if there is no backup model,
press ENT again to keep the same NODE ID. Next, press SEL and ENT at the same time to bypass
Receiver/GASSENSOR Calibration and reach the operating mode.
In operating mode, the display will show Primary and Back NODE_IDs, the corresponding RF
channel from the table above and RC Receiver based Motor Status (RC : ), RF based Motor Status
(RF : ) and Watt minutes (WM:
). The RC Receiver Motor Status will be N (Null) as there is
no spare RC receiver connected. Telemetry (RF) signal conditions are 0, 1 and N which means
Motor Off, Motor On and Null (signal invalid or beyond range).
During Distance task, accumulated WM can be told to the pilot by a helper observing the spare
GDGT. We recommend creating a paper of expected WM readings after each climb. The helper
should compare actual to expected readings and advise the pilot each 3 climbs “use more” , “use
less” or “OK” .
Down Loading GDGT LogFiles : Each Motor run is stored in a Logfile. Motor runs from many
Flights can be downloaded after flying. Connect the USB port to a PC by correct cable. Ensure PC
has correct driver for USB-FTDI Module. WINDOWS 10 based PCs can usually find it on Internet if
connected. The PC needs a simple RS-232 Serial Communications Program to receive the data. We
recommend
a
free
program
on
the
internet
called
“TERMITE”
http://www.compuphase.com/software_termite.htm . Termite has to be set with your PC COM
15
PORT given to the USB FTDI module (often 1 to 4). The data style is 8 bits, 1 stop bit, no parity and
9600 Baud.
When GDGT asks for NODE ID, instead press UP and DN at once. The new display will be
“LOGFILE DOWNLOAD” and “DEL
GO”. Press ENT button to start download. Display
will show a message indicating it is sending data then go back to previous display. You can
download many times. To clear Logfile, press SEL button instead of ENT. Data from TERMITE can
be copied and pasted in to Microsoft EXCELL for analysis. Each line of data in decimal (ASCII
format) is one motor on/motor off event. The data means :
NODE ID, <start time in 1/10 seconds after GDGT is turned on>,<end time in 1/10 seconds after
GDGT is turned on>,Watt Minutes
Happy F-5B Flying!
Troubleshooting Operations
1. Symptom : WM not 0000 after throttle blip.
a. Probable Cause 1) : ATT connected improperly in model. Check connections within
model. Upon power up, ATT should make 5 second buzz then ½ second buzz each 2
seconds.
b. Probably Cause 2) :ATT NODE ID does not match either primary or backup NODE ID
set in GDGT. Cycle power to GDGT and reset NODE IDs appropriately.
c. Probably Cause 3) : GDGT Processor frozen. This may occur if Receiver is
disconnected and then reconnected such as during binding. Cycle power to the GDGT
and repeat calibration sequence.
2. Symptom : GDGT displays “RF CHANNEL FAIL !” briefly after setting NODE IDs.
a. Cause 1) GDGT processor failed to issue proper channel changing command. Cycle
power to the GDGT and repeat calibration sequence.
b. Cause 2) RF Module Faulty. Return GDGT for service.
3. Symptom : LCD dim or blank during operation.
a. Cause 1) : GASSENSOR battery discharged or low. GASSENSOR must provide a
minimum of 4.5 volts to operate both Receiver and GDGT. Charge GASSENSOR
battery.
b. Cause 2) : LCD Contrast Potentiometer out of adjustment. Remove (4) screws securing
back cover of GDGT. Locate only potentiometer on circuit board. Energize GDGT with
applicable GASSENSOR and adjust potentiometer using small screwdriver for best
LCD viewing. Replace cover.

Contestant Instructions for NeuMotors
F5D Limiter (F5DEL) Version 1.1
General Description : The F5DEL is compact device designed to
accumulate WM when current is flowing to the speed control and to cut
the throttle off when the preset limit of 1000WM is reached. The current
sensor works both directions so the positive battery lead can either male
or female 6 mm connector.
Installing the device: The F5DEL must be installed in line with the
positive battery supply. 6mm connectors are used and the device can be
installed either direction as the sensor is bi-directional. The ground
return is through the RC system so to function correctly the female RC
pulse “out” must connected to a speed control that does not have optical
isolation. The 25cm long RC pulse IN male plug must be connected to
the throttle channel that commands the motor. In most cases the best
place to install the F5DEL is in the gap between the motor controller and
17
battery. Route the RC connectors along the bottom or sides of the
fuselage and use tape to keep them out of the way.
Operation: The F5DEL has no user adjustable settings - it’s operation is
very simple. When power is applied the F5DEL “zeros” out the energy
accumulator. When the RC pulse is increased above 1.2ms the F5DEL
looks for motor current and when detected starts to accumulate WM.
The motor will be stopped once the energy limit of 1000 WM has been
reached. The motor cutoff will continue for 10 seconds after which
additional motor run time will be allowed until the additional 10% energy
limit is reached at which point another 10 second motor will occur. This
sequence will repeated until the model lands.
