A letter to our donors
Dear Friends,
Our Mission:
We are pleased to report that despite a challenging economic
climate in 2009, grants made from the Oakville Hospital
Foundation (OHF), to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital
increased from $3.2 million in 2008/09 to $3.7 million in
2009/10. We extend our sincere thanks to our extraordinary
donors - you are true friends. The generous spirit in our
town flows like an undercurrent when the need arises. And
as our needs expand, with the New Oakville Hospital on the
horizon, our Foundation Board members, staff and volunteers
remain committed to ensuring you have access to high quality
healthcare services, close to home.
Committees who ensure the Board has the information they
need to conduct due diligence and make prudent decisions.
We will continue with ongoing evaluation of our governance
structure and skills matrix with the goal to recruit, retain and
provide succession planning for our Board and staff.

Letter to Our Donors
Dear Friends,
This past year has been a successful one for the Oakville Hospital Foundation and in turn for the health of our community.
The Foundation is grateful to you for a record year of support in 2010/2011. The combined passion and commitment of volunteers and
staff led us to achieve the most funds raised in a single year in our Foundation’s history and at the lowest expense ratio. We are grateful to
our leadership volunteers for dedicating themselves to help make this happen.
Last year is marked by many achievements including keeping our administrative costs far below the industry average, redefining our
donor recognition and stewardship policy, and the growing popularity of our “Talks with Docs” series that feature Oakville physicians
sharing their leading-edge insights into our community’s most important health issues. Four pacesetting gifts, led by the Oakville
Hospital Volunteer Association’s pledge of $3 million in 2009, helped make this a transformational year for the Foundation, including
the largest donation in our hospital’s history. Peter Gilgan’s unprecedented generosity will have an enduring impact on the lives of many
families in our community.
We know that all donations – from a $10 million pacesetting gift to a $10 pledge to a runner in the OTMH Classic – deserve a strong
ROI. For nonprofit organizations and donors, that familiar business acronym translates to results, outcome and impact. We believe that is
the true value of your contributions to our hospital. Your donations have a significant and immediate impact on our healthcare team and
the patients they serve. On pages 4 and 5 of this report you will see some tangible examples as to how community support funded our
equipment needs this past year.
In 2011, we raised nearly $10 million more than we did in 2009/2010. This incredible achievement is thanks to you. Your
relationships with our staff and volunteers brings meaning to our work. In addition to our gratitude you also have our promise that
we continue to steward your gifts efficiently and responsibly. Thank you for your trust and confidence. We remain committed to being
accountable and transparent to you our generous donors and stakeholders in our Foundation.
“We know that all donations – from a $10 million pacesetting gift to a
$10 pledge to a runner in the OTMH Classic – deserve a strong ROI.”
There is a growing enthusiasm in Oakville to support our new hospital. Our community is beginning to rally around the vision of a
new, innovative centre for medical excellence. To date more than $21 Million in major gifts has been announced toward our new hospital.
While our journey has just begun we are confident that with your help we can keep the momentum going to achieve our $60 million
campaign goal.
But for now, the purpose of this annual report is to recognize the many individuals, corporations and community groups who have
helped make this past year a remarkably successful one.
On behalf of our healthcare team and patients, we applaud the generosity of all those who supported our hospital this past year. Your
support was absolutely critical.
Yours in philanthropy,

Pacesetting Philanthropists
In 2010-2011, these extraordinary donors
supported our new Oakville Hospital campaign
with gifts that will make a monumental difference
to the future healthcare of our community.
Peter Gilgan - $10 Million
Ten years ago, Peter Gilgan a newly arrived Hospital Board
Member, fresh with innovative ideas, commented to his fellow
directors that Oakville may need a brand new hospital in the
not too distant future. He volunteered that when the time
came to build the new hospital he would be there to help;
“just ask”, he said.
Last year, Peter Gilgan stepped forward to lead the way
in helping to make the new Oakville Hospital a reality by
donating $10 million.
Peter Gilgan’s gift will go a long way towards facilitating
the introduction of numerous enhancements to patient care
at the new Oakville Hospital. From modernized operating
rooms, to an Emergency Department that will be 4 times
2010/2011 Annual Report
the size of the current one - with its own CT scanner - to a
state -of-the-art Intensive Care Unit, all designed with a focus
on creating a supportive, calming and healing environment.
As well, eighty per cent of all rooms will be designed for single
patient use allowing for additional privacy, opportunities
for families to remain with their loved ones and enhanced
infection prevention and control.
The $10 million gift is the largest contribution the
Hospital has ever received. It is a pacesetting gift that has
set a new benchmark for philanthropy in our community and
is the largest (to date) in Peter Gilgan’s long track record of
community involvement. In recognition of his generosity, the
new Oakville Hospital’s inpatient tower will be named the
Peter Gilgan Patient Care Centre.
“I believe that private corporations and individuals
with means need to play a part in building vibrant
communities and I want to encourage others who are also
fortunate to be successful in business to get involved,”
said Peter Gilgan at the time of the announcement.

The WB Family Foundation - $5 Million
The Birmingham Family - $3.5 Million
The Beamish family has demonstrated time and again their
commitment to improving healthcare in Canada. Their latest
investment is a $5 million gift that will see enhancements
to the diagnostic imaging services offered in Oakville. This
tremendous gift will help to ensure that Oakville residents
have improved access to more advanced diagnostic imaging
technology both at OTMH and the new Oakville Hospital.
Diagnostic imaging technology is an area that can
significantly impact the cost of healthcare in hospitals today. In
addition to supporting the workflow of other departments in
the hospital, advanced imaging techniques such as computed
tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
can shorten the length of a person’s hospital stay and decrease
the high costs associated with hospitalization. Advanced
imaging provided by CT scanners, MRI equipment, digital
mammography as well as other modalities in the department,
are vital, non-invasive diagnostic tools that play a key role in
enhancing the medical needs of our community.
The new Oakville Hospital will provide MRI services for
residents of Oakville, Milton, Georgetown and Halton Hills.
We plan to open the new hospital with a combination of five
MRIs and CT scanners. Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital
currently operates one MRI and one CT scanner to service
more than 300,000 people.
“With Oakville’s population rapidly growing with new
young families we feel fortunate to be in a position to
give back to the community and hospital that has been
there for us for so many years,” said Marilyn Beamish.
For more than 20 years, Betty Birmingham, and her late
husband Bruce, have been loyal supporters of the OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital. Last year they made a
tremendous $3.5 million contribution to the new Oakville
Hospital Campaign, bringing their total donations to the
hospital to more than $8.1 million.
The construction of the new Oakville Hospital is significant
as it will include a cancer clinic, marking the first time
oncology services will be available within the community.
The oncology component of the clinic will provide patient
assessment, teaching, counselling, information, chemotherapy
administration, blood transfusions, procedures and clinical
trials for oncology patients. The medical day care services
within the Clinic will provide specialized outpatient care
for patients requiring minor medical treatments, therapies
or procedures that require a stay of 4-6 hours, including
blood transfusions, investigative procedures including needle
biopsies and intravenous (IV) injection therapy.
The Birminghams, also the Honourary Co-Chairs of the new
Oakville Hospital Campaign, will have their gift recognized
through the naming of the Birmingham Cancer and Medical
Day Care Clinic.
Up to $500,000 of their gift will be allocated towards a
matching donation challenge to purchase essential medical
equipment for the Cancer and Medical Day Care Clinic.
Community donations towards this department will be
matched, dollar for dollar – another example of how the
Birmingham family believe in catalytic philanthropy.
“I’m often asked why Bruce and I support philanthropic
causes like this,” says Betty Birmingham. “The answer is
simple; Bruce always believed that you support the hospital
in your community and that you lead by example, as do I.”

Financial Report
Comments from the Chair of the
Finance Committee & the Chief
Executive Officer
The Oakville Hospital Foundation ended its fiscal year with a record-breaking increase in revenue from previous years.
We are pleased to report that the 2010/2011 audited financial statements show revenue of more than $13.3 million.
This revenue enabled us to fund OTMH priority equipment needs and contribute toward our $60 million goal to equip
the new Oakville Hospital. This year we granted $919,000 for equipment needs on the priority lists (all items moving to
the new hospital), and $2.3 million from donor designated funds.
These funds were raised through a variety of means including direct mail, our special events: Wine Auction, Golf
Tournament, Candlelight Ball, and OTMH Classic and the growing Community Partners program. In addition, careful fund
management resulted in $933,000 in net investment income.
Our greatest success, however, rests with personal gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations which totaled
$8.8 million. This remarkable growth in our major gift program demonstrates our community’s belief and commitment to
the new Oakville Hospital.
We are grateful for the many individuals and organizations we partner with in the community. Our success, and the
Hospital’s, can only be achieved with your support. We also thank our Board members and Campaign volunteers whose
leadership ensures our mission is front and centre in the community.
Yours in accountability,

Fundraising Expenses
Fundraising expense management is a topic of interest
in our industry and among communities at large and is
monitored very closely by the Oakville Hospital Foundation.
We at the Oakville Hospital Foundation are conscious
of our responsibilities and are accountable to those in the
community who place their trust in us.
Thanks in large part to significant major gift activity
in 2010/2011 in response to our new Oakville Hospital
Campaign, our cost per dollar raised (also known as our
expense ratio) was 16% last year. To the business audience,
this is often referred to as a ‘Return on Investment’ of 84%.
This means we are allocating 84 cents of every dollar
raised in the community to address the priority needs of
our hospital – both the immediate purchase of essential
medical equipment and providing for the equipment needs
of tomorrow through endowments and investments.
The expense ratio calculation can differ between charities.
When comparing, please note that the Oakville Hospital
Foundation expense ratio includes ALL expenses, including
events, salaries and administrative expenses.
The position of The Canada Revenue Agency on Expense
Ratios is expense ratios under 35% are unlikely to generate
any questions or concerns.
Ethical Fundraising

New Oakville Hospital
Building on the deep roots of our community, the new
Oakville Hospital will take healthcare in Oakville to a new
level. Situated on a 50-acre site located at Third Line and
Dundas Street, the new hospital will be more than double the
size of OTMH to meet the urgent needs of our community’s
growing and aging population.
• A healing environment focused on patient and familycentred care
• Space for future expansion to accommodate population
growth, advancements in healthcare, and education and
training space to ensure leading-edge care is available in
Oakville today, tomorrow, and the future
The new Oakville Hospital will offer:
• 80% single-patient rooms to reduce the risk of infection
and enhance patient privacy and comfort
• Expanded capacity in all areas including a larger
diagnostic imaging department with a combination of 5
MRIs and CT Scanners
• A new cancer clinic to provide patient assessment,
counseling, and chemotherapy administration
Now is the time for Oakville’s extraordinary community,
renowned for its generosity and commitment, to come
together and help the Oakville Hospital Foundation. With
your help and support, we can equip a remarkable hospital
that will respond to emergencies, mend broken bones,
administer cancer care and promote all aspects of health in
our community.
