Father's Day “Any man can be a Father, but it takes a special person to be called Dad”. Father's day is a day to honour all the fathers for everything they do for their children. Father's Day is celebrated on different dates in different countries. Most countries like US, UK, Canada and India celebrate this festival on the third Sunday of June. However, there are a few countries that have unique dates based on their traditions. A customary day for the celebration of fatherhood in catholic Europe is thought to date back to the Middle Ages and it is observed on 19th March, as the feast of St. Joseph. This celebration was brought to the Americas by the Spanish and Portuguese, and in Latin America, Father's Day is still celebrated on 19 March. Father's Day was not celebrated in the US, outside Catholic traditions, until the 20th century. Father's Day celebration as seen today is primarily a secular event. It is thanks to the hard work and struggle of one woman, Ms Sonora Dodd of Washington USA that, just as we have set aside Mother's Day to honour mothers we have a day to acknowledge the important role played by the father. It was inaugurated in the early 20th century. On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honour of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a onetime commemoration and not an annual holiday. However, slowly, the idea spread across the country. Looking at the heightened popularity of Father's Day in US, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea of a national Father's Day in 1924 to, "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations". Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Fathers’ Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Unlike in US and several other countries where Father's Day is celebrated on the Third Sunday of June, Fathers’ Day in Australia is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. Hence, the date of Father's Day is never a fixed day CHURCH DIRECTORY The church members directory is now available by e-mail. Please contact Ray – address on the last page.
