Rules & the Stages of the Young Consumers of the Year Competition The competition is open to teams of four students from schools and youth groups. You can enter as many teams as you wish Team members must be aged between 14-17 years at the start of the competition in September 2013. They must not have reached the age of 18 before 1 January 2014 A team of four students may only ever enter the competition once. It is, however, possible to submit a team with a maximum of two members who have taken part in a previous year, provided that the team of which they were originally members did not proceed to a regional final. Immediate family of trading standards professionals will not be eligible to enter. Where a problem arises substitute team members may be allowed at the organisers' discretion. A formal appeals procedure will be invoked if there is a challenge to a result but the organisers' decision is final in any dispute. Elimination Round You have two options on how to take part in the Elimination Round, the choice is yours. You can either run the Elimination Round as an in-school paper quiz (the usual way) or you can take part online. The 6 top scoring schools from this round will win a place in the Kent Final. Option 1: In-school paper quiz Complete the paper quiz between September 2013 and 14 January 2014. Question / Answer packs are sent to the nominated teacher who will be responsible for holding this stage of the competition in school lesson time where students must be supervised throughout. Questions are multiple-choice and you should allow approximately 1 hour. All completed Answer Books must be returned no later than 14 January 2014 to Sandra Cook, who will advise the school if your team has qualified for the Kent Final. Option 2: Online quiz Take part between September 2013 and 14 January 2014. To register, log on to the Trading Standards Institute website: www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/events/index.cfm click on the ‘young consumers’ button on the left hand side and complete the details on the 'register to take part' web page to get your unique log-in. You will be asked for the following details when you register for the competition: name of school, email address and team names. Questions are multiple-choice and there is a one hour time limit. Your school may submit multiple teams but each team may enter only once. Sandra Cook will advise the school if your team has qualified for the Kent Final. Important: Please make absolutely sure when selecting your team that examination commitments will not prevent them from competing in the national final, should your team qualify.
