Introduction


Nowadays, special applications such as rolling
mills, paper mills, traction systems... require the
most demanding conditions for operations.

Harmonic currents, present on distribution lines can
cause overheating and saturations difficult to
quantify, that forces to oversize the transformers.

Overloading due to extreme operation conditions
can also decrease a standard transformer lifetime if
not correctly considered.

Hot ambient temperatures in summer conditions
can create unexpected trips in the distribution line
and deteriorate the insulation.

ABB has developed a new transformer concept,
adding to ABB transformers known performance the
advantages of the class H insulation to overcome all
these possible problems.

| Slide 6

Insulation suitable for temperatures up to 180 ºC
and 220 ºC as hot spot.

Transformer temperature rise limited to 100 K at
full load.

Suitable for saline atmospheres.

Vibration proof.

Design tested up to 250 kV BIL.

Optional design up to –40 ºC.

Overloading capabilities
hi-T Plus transformers can be
continuously overloaded under
normal operation without ageing
impact even at full rated power.

Advantages for distribution applications


Increased insulation lifetime.

More than 4 times higher compared to
a standard transformer.

Most reliable High Voltage design in
the market.
No unexpected alarm / trip problems.


Able to work at full load under
extremely high summer conditions or
high temperature environments (mills,
machine chambers).

Advantages for special applications

Specially designed for high harmonic
content networks.


| Slide 9
Able to withstand additional losses
generated by non foreseen harmonics
without life impact.
Able to work under sudden overloads
without life impact or temperature
alarms.

Certain applications such as rolling
mills generate current peaks that can
be higher than expected under special
production conditions.

Transformers without special oversize
will face deterioration if not used at
lower ratings afterwards, affecting to
plant production.

Class H transformers allow continuous
operation after overload without
thermal ageing in insulations.

H/H or F/H with 100K temperature rise?

F/H with 100 K.



| Slide 10
High Voltage coil is in class F
(100 K temp. rise limit).

No life advantage in the most critical part of
the transformer.

No overloading possibility.

In case of higher harmonics High Voltage will
deteriorate faster than Low Voltage creating a
weak point in a non-repairable part.
To achieve a similar behavior as hi-T Plus
transformer, High Voltage shall be designed for
75 K temp. rise, with a high price impact and
higher dimensions.

Conclusions

| Slide 11

hi-T Plus transformer has a much higher
working life than a class F transformer.

hi-T Plus transformer saves production costs
due to unexpected trips due to high temperature
(summer periods, air conditioner failures).

hi-T Plus transformers can work in high
harmonic content networks without over
temperature problems or insulation degradation.

hi-T Plus transformers can be overloaded under
normal operation without further reduction of
power.
