Ladybirds will be learning about textures through treasure baskets

Curriculum plan for Ladybirds
Culture weeks
Clothes from around the world
Autumn 1
We will be encouraging the children to
express their feelings using their individual
communication systems/vocalising and using
the ‘I feel...’ board. We will encourage them
to look and play with toys individually and in
groups to encourage and foster relationships,
and encourage turn taking. The children will
be encouraged to share fabrics and choose
their favourites.
Ladybirds will be learning about textures
through treasure baskets. They will continue
to visit different areas around the school such
as soft play forest school and the farm. The
children will be connecting flag symbols to
the relevant music for each country we are
learning about. We will be celebrating and
valuing different cultural & religious events
and experiences from different countries.

Whilst playing and exploring, the children will
be offered free flow play to explore, make

be encouraged to take off, hang up their own
coats and put their bags in their tubs and put
their drinking cups/bottles in the tray after
snack has finished. The children will also be
able to request various forms of dress using
photos/symbols.
Ladybird will be accessing books daily to
encourage them to handle books & enjoy
pictures. Our focus story will be ‘Handa’s
Surprise’. Ladybirds will be looking at books
from different cultures. The children will be
encouraged to mark make in the indoor/
outside classroom. Ladybirds will be mark
making in sand, with fruits and finger
painting. Easels will be in use outside.
The children will be encouraged to
communicate through movement & play. We
will be continuing with ‘Wake & Shake’ &
singing ‘hokey kokey. There will be printing
on material using different colours; looking
at, and learning to make their own patterns;
making King and Queen Crowns and dressing
up, dancing with ribbons to music from
different Cultures. The children will also be
making rhythm and sounds with musical
instruments and enjoying feeling lots of
different textures.
The children will continue with their
individual methods of communication such as
the spoken word, PECs, Makaton. The
children will be more familiar with ‘objects of
reference’ for transitioning. The children will
be gently persuaded to make requests for
different outfits/materials of their choosing.
Ladybirds will build on their fine motor skills
by manipulating with different materials such
as play dough – rolling, placing in objects and
small sticks etc. We will be focusing on
putting on our own coats for outdoor play
and learning to do up our own buttons. The
children will be rolling, catching and sharing a
big ‘blown up world/ball. We will be dancing
and moving our bodies in different ways.
