Learning Team will be assigned a function (i.e., accounting, HR, marketing/sales,
manufacturing, engineering, etc.) and will develop a plan to address the problem or
opportunity as stated in this case to help Mr. Min-Yo Lee, in answering his concern. “We are
facing strong competition for our products. Large apparel firms are driving prices down on
high-volume licensed brands. Each day more firms enter the customized shirt business. Our
profits are lower than expected, and delivery performance is deteriorating. We must
reexamine our capabilities and decide what we can do best.”
Each Learning Team will present its plan. Learning Teams are not required to create the

UOP MATERIAL
E-PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT - OPERATIONS IMPROVEMENT PLAN
As a course project, due in Week Six, each Learning Team or directed study student is to
complete and submit a 2,800-3,500 word paper, supported by a Microsoft PowerPoint®
presentation on an “Operations Improvement Plan.”
The plan will identify a process improvement, presenting a clear representation of the process,
recommending a way to improve the process, and describing a means for evaluating the success
of the improvement if implemented. This plan will be due in Week Six.
The process selected must meet the following three criteria:
1. It must be clearly understood.
2. It must have frequent, repetitive, and measurable key indicators.
3. It must be subject to improvement.
Identify and analyze the relevant process data. Based on the analysis of that data, make
recommendations to improve the operation. Challenge your assumptions.
Examples include:
1. Problem: large back order on beverage cup production process.
Cause: overselling of one key production machine.
Solution: reduced back orders to near zero after rescheduling machine for actual capacity.
2. Problem: slow and ineffective software debugging process for a database program.
Cause: lack of analyzable information.
Solution: determined new information requirements and designed a clear, effective form for
bug detection and correction.
3. Problem: delays in the process of delivering health education material to clients.
Cause: diffuse responsibilities regarding order taking and fulfillment.
Solution: reduced delays to near zero within one week after dedicating a fax machine and
centralizing responsibilities to one person.
4. Problem: delays in process of shipping foreign money, involving a delivery service.
Cause: complex process with numerous approval steps.
Solution: reduced average delivery turnaround from 12 days to 4 days after reducing process
steps from 15 to 3 and reducing approvals to one person.
5. Problem: slow throughput of customers through retail/food services located between 9th and
10th holes on a golf course.
Cause: bottlenecks in customer flow caused by layout and signage problems.
Solution: reduced total theoretical average throughput of customers from 30 to 15 minutes
(based on average duration of each possible activity customers can participate in at the 9th) by
improving layout of snack stand, moving golf balls from store to sales stand located on the
golf course, and improving directional signage.
