We have an LCD projector and document camera in every classroom so that teachers can project images, ideas, stories and involve students in shared writing activities. Classes regularly visit the computer lab to use the internet for research, to engage in learning programs and for word processing purposes. Bring Your Own Device to school will help to support student learning in additional ways as students have ready access to resources and ideas. As always, the teacher is the orchestrator of the learning environment and will support students in using their devices in appropriate ways at designated times. In the month of May, teachers will enjoy a presentation from a group of students and teachers from Bristol Road Middle School in which Bristol students (some of whom formerly attended Barondale) will demonstrate the ways in which they are using BYOD to support research and social justice initiatives. We look forward to our school-wide BYOD day on May 10! J. Redhead Many Hands, Many Lands, One Heart Beaucoup des Mains, Beaucoup des Terres, Un Cœur CHARACTER MATTERS WELCOME TO BARONDALE! On Wednesday, May 29 we will be hosting our annual Welcome to Barondale evening for new Kindergarten students. This interactive hands-on workshop provides new Kindergarten students and their parents with the opportunity to engage in educational tasks that will help to prepare students for Kindergarten. Centres will include play-doh, art activities, books, and magnetic letters and numbers. At the end of the evening, students take home a bag of items such as magnetic letters, books, and crayons provided by The Learning Partnership. Children can use these items over the summer as they prepare for September. We look forward to seeing all of the students who will be in the Year 1 Full-Day Kindergarten Program for September 2013! Our Character Attribute for May is RESPECT. Children can show respect towards others, themselves and property. They show respect for others by using manners and polite words and by caring about the ideas, opinions and feelings of others. They show respect for themselves by not tolerating inappropriate behavior, by using their words to express themselves, and by getting help when needed. They show respect for property by looking after their own items and things that belong to the classroom. Students also show respect for the environment by conserving energy, water and reducing litter. EXTRA CURRICULAR Bench Ball Games: During the month of May, the girls and boys in Grade Two will have the opportunity to participate in bench ball games. A very large number of second grade students were present for the “sign-up” meeting in late April. Our games will begin early in May and will take place during lunch recesses. The boys and girls will be assigned to teams and they will enjoy playing with old friends as well as new friends from other classes. Participation in this extra curricular activity will be acknowledged at our celebrations assembly at the end of May. Those team members who demonstrate commitment to their team will receive a special certificate and a special ribbon to add to their Barondale School buttons. Supervising teachers will promote fair play, good sportsmanship and kind words of encouragement. Winning games will not be the important thing......the important things will be following through with a commitment, being a good sport and having a great time with friends! Soccer: Grade 4 and 5 Soccer is VERY popular at Barondale. Lunchtime games will begin for four teams of girls, and five teams of boys. Each team has both Grade 4 and Grade 5 team members on it. Teams will have the opportunity to play several games over the month of May. Let’s hope the weather cooperates. Games will be announced on the announcements each morning, based on the condition of the school field that day. Games will begin at 12:30 to accommodate students that go home for lunch. Mrs. Mills will be watching soccer players and considering her selection of students to represent Barondale at the annual Earnscliffe Soccer Tournaments. Twelve lucky boys and twelve lucky girls will be selected for the Barondale School Soccer teams. The girls tournament will be held on June 13 and the boys tournament will be held on June 14. Mrs. Mills is looking for students with strong soccer skills, fair team play, good sportsmanship and an overall positive attitude at school and in gym classes. Good luck to everyone! June Jog: Over the months of May and June, we will be running during gym classes, to train for our Annual June Jog. This is a fun run that all participants at school enter. Every runner who completes the race will receive a ribbon. Also, Mrs. Mills will be holding try outs for the school Cross Country team. Five boys and five girls from each grade level will be picked to represent Barondale at a Cross Country Meet being held at Mississauga Valley Community Centre, on May 23. Practising on weekends to build up stamina will improve your running endurance. The Barondale Cross Country team will be announced on May 17. LIBRARY NEWS Author Visit! Final Due Date for Library Books May will be the last month when students can borrow books from the library this school year. The final due date will be June 6. Every book will have to be returned to the library by this date, so that missing or lost items can be traced. All library bags from students in the primary grades will also be collected after the last due date. Ms. Hurley MUSIC MONDAY Each year since 2005, the first Monday in May has been declared “Music Monday”. It is a day when we unite the country in a demonstration of our love for music in our lives and in our schools. This movement was initiated by the Coalition for Music Education in Canada which advocates for the contribution that music education makes in the lives of all Canadians. Here, at Barondale, we participate in Music Monday by singing out loud and out proud. On Monday, May 6, all students will join together in song to sing Sing Sing Sing by Serena Ryder. Our Grade 3 students will beat the frame drums they constructed earlier in the year, to keep everyone singing together and in time. There will also be an assembly where students will gather to demonstrate what they are learning in music. Performances will include singing, Native drumming, recorder performances, patterned movement to demonstrate form, and two of our Grade 5 students will perform pieces on the piano that had been prepared for the Peel Music Festival. We will also show the video recording of the song, ISS, and students will have the opportunity to sing along with Chris Hadfield, from outer space, and Ed Robertson. This year's official Music Monday song has generated a lot of excitement for the cause, as it was co-composed by Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield, and Ed Robertson. The recording of the song, I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing) is a first in music recording history, as it was recorded with Chris Hadfield singing and playing his guitar from the International Space Station, while the other musicians performed from down here, on earth!! We will be showing the video recording of the song, ISS, at our Music Monday assembly and students will have the opportunity to sing along with Chris Hadfield, from outer space, and Ed Robertson, from the recording studio. If you have not yet seen historic event, please go to www.musicmonday.ca, and enjoy the official Music Monday song, I.S.S., and watch Chris Hadfield singing from outer space with musicians in the recording studio.
