also the BALTIC - The Centre for
Contemporary Art and The Sage

Developing Quaysides
When the Romans first arrived at
the Tyne they would have found
a broader river than today,
flowing in a steep valley and
fringed with marshy ground.
In the Middle Ages the riverbank
on the northern side was
consolidated and some of the
marshy margins were reclaimed.
This led to the construction of
buildings along The Close and
Sandgate, the heart of Medieval
Newcastle. Eventually the Town
Wall was built through here,
parallel to the river.
With the Quayside offering
fascinating architecture, cultural
attractions and nightlife it’s not
surprising that Newcastle and
Gateshead are putting in a joint
bid to become the European
Capital of Culture 2008.
The late 20th century saw the
decline of all these former
riverside industries, but now a
new era of quayside
regeneration is transforming
both sides of the river.
Newcastle Quayside is now
home to stylish hotels, designer

The major expansion of
Newcastle’s Quayside came in
the 18th and 19th centuries as
the shipping trade developed.
Eventually the riverfront between
Sandgate and the Ouseburn was
lined with wharves and sheds.
By 1900 the Gateshead riverside
was similarly crowded with
factories and warehouses.

It was replaced in the 12th
century by the medieval bridge
E , which had towers and
buildings along its length. This
was partly destroyed by floods in
the 18th century and was
replaced by the Georgian
Bridge. This elegant stonearched bridge would probably
have still existed to this day but
for the need for larger ships to
pass to and from the upper
reaches of the Tyne. Thus in
1876 this was replaced by the
Swing Bridge E which could
open to allow the passage of
large ships.
The Gateshead Millennium
Bridge G is the world’s first
rotating bridge. Designed by
Wilkinson Eyre Architects, the
pedestrian and cycle bridge
operates like a giant blinking
eye. Construction began in May
1999, and by November 2000
the completed bridge was
transported by one of the
world’s largest floating cranes
(Asian Hercules II) to it’s final
location. The bridge was opened
to the public in September 2001.

The Roman bridge was the first
major bridge over the Tyne at
Newcastle and was built by the
Roman Emperor Titus Aelius
Hadrianus. ‘Pons Aelius’ was
also the name of the fort built by
Hadrian on the Newcastle side of
the river which guarded the
bridge. The bridge was built in
120AD and was destroyed by
fire in 1248.

Several parking areas are
indicated on the map, but car
parking in the central areas can
be limited and thus the use of
public transport is
recommended.
There were two bridges before
the present Redheugh Bridge .A
The first was built in 1870 which
collapsed during a storm in
1879. The second Redheugh
Bridge was built in 1901. In 1983
the third and current Redheugh
bridge was built.

Exploring Hadrian’s Way
The Blacksmith’s Needle has
six sections representing five
human senses, and the ‘sixth
sense’. It is one of many artworks
on Newcastle’s Quayside.
