About Bethany
Bethany, a small college of national distinction, was founded March 2, 1840. For
nearly 170 years, Bethany College has been a highly contemporary institution
based in the tradition of the liberal arts.
The College offers a wide array of studies, awarding Bachelor of Science and
Bachelor of Arts degrees in more than 25 fields of study, many with options for
emphasis. Students also have the option of including one or more optional
minors as part of their programs.
The College’s program of liberal arts education prepares students for a lifetime
of work and a life of significance. Bethany places particular emphasis on
leadership and incorporates pre-professional education in dentistry, engineering, law, medicine, physical therapy, public administration, theology and
veterinary medicine.
Bethany’s 1,300-acre campus is located in the northern panhandle of West
Virginia in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. Pittsburgh, America’s Most
Livable City, is a 50-minute drive from campus. Wheeling, W.Va.; Washington,
Pa.; and Steubenville, Ohio are less than a half-hour away.
Founded by Alexander Campbell, who provided the land and funds for the first
building and served as the first president, Bethany has been a four-year private
liberal arts college affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
since its inception. This religious body, of which Campbell was one of the
principal founders, continues to support and encourage the College, but
exercises no sectarian control. Students from virtually every religious community attend Bethany.
The approximately 850 Bethany students represent 26 states, the District of
Columbia, Puerto Rico and 11 countries.

About the PAC
Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of
promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.
Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany, Chatham, Geneva, Grove City, Saint
Vincent, Thiel, Thomas More, Washington & Jefferson, Waynesburg and Westminster the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics.
With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the
principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself.
The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More,
formerly an NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member,
joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in
2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member
and began league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional membership in 2007-08.
Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08.
The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2007-08, the conference had 35
teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 19 in NCAA Championship
events. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for most
NCAA Division III national championship events.
All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads
for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC
accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships.
The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools
which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson
men and Westminster women captured the 2007-08 trophies.
True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and
NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named a record 660 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes
who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

Administration
Dr. Scott D. Miller, 49, became the 19th president of Bethany College on January 1, 2008. Well known nationally for his contributions
to higher education, he was one of 17 presidents nationwide featured
in a Kauffman Foundation-funded book entitled The Entrepreneurial
College President (American Council on Education/Praeger Series on
Higher Education, 2004, pages 132-133). Five years ago, he was featured in the book The Small College Guide to Financial Health (National Association of College & University Business Officers, 2002,
pages 126, 192-194).
Prior to coming to Bethany Dr. Miller served as the 15th President
of
Wesley College (1997-2007) in Dover, Delaware. Dr. Miller’s
Dr. Scott Miller
tenure
as Wesley president was remarkably successful. He built on
President
the institution’s rich heritage as Delaware’s oldest private college,
inspiring record applications, a climbing enrollment, increased alumni participation and
giving, a greater minority presence, and ultimately, national recognition for the institution.
He led the college community in the creation of From Here to 2010: A Plan for Wesley
College, a widely endorsed $84 million blueprint which charts the institutional course for
the foreseeable future.
Dr. Miller was the 16th president of Lincoln Memorial University (1991-97) in
Harrogate, Tennessee. He served as Executive Vice President (1988-91) and Vice
President for Development (1984-88) before being named president. He was also an
interim public information officer at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Director of
University Relations and Alumni Affairs at the University of Rio Grande (OH). He is
also a former newspaper journalist for The Edinboro (PA) Independent, The Buckhannon
(WV) Record and The Weston (WV) Independent.
Dr. Miller earned his B.A. from West Virginia Wesleyan College, M. A. from the
University of Dayton, Ed.S. from Vanderbilt University, and Ph.D. in Higher Education
Administration from The Union Institute & University. He has also completed postgraduate studies at Ohio University and Harvard University. He is married to the former
Annie Cook (a registered nurse), and they have two daughters, Katie, 23, and Ashlee, 21.
Tim Weaver was named director of athletics at Bethany in June of
2008.
Weaver’s brief time as director of Bethany’s 20-sport varsity
athletic program has been busy. He coordinated the search for a new
head men’s basketball coach in the spring and oversaw the construction and revitalization of the school’s football, track and softball
facilities. In addition, Weaver assumed the role as Chair of the
Presidents’ Athletic Conference Athletic Director’s Council on July
1.
Also the Bison head football coach, Weaver arrived from Columbia
in
2006 after a three-year stint as the Lions’ defensive coordinator.
Tim Weaver
In
his third year at the helm, Weaver is building Bethany into a top
Dir. of Athletics
program in the PAC. During his tenure, he has guided the Bison to
eight wins, 20 school records have either been broken or tied and 18 players have earned
All-PAC status.
A 1990 graduate from Davidson (N.C.) College with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and
anthropology, Weaver and his wife, Kelly, reside in Bethany with their two daughters,
Delaney, 6, and Casey, 2.

Head Coach
Former University of North Florida assistant Mike Summey
was selected as the new head men’s basketball coach at Bethany
College on April 1 by President Dr. Scott D. Miller.
Summey was chosen from a field of more than 60 applicants,
including several current head coaches, to take over a Bison
program which has won three PAC titles in the last four years and
five in the last eight seasons.
“Mike Summey is one of the bright young minds in college
basketball and we are very excited he is going to lead our men’s
basketball program,” said Dr. Miller. “He rose to the top of a deep
Mike Summey and experienced applicant pool, which included 62 candidates,
Head Coach
including six current head coaches. With his experience at the
Division I and Division II levels, we are looking forward to Mike
continuing the success of our program.”
Summey becomes the 24th men’s basketball coach in Bethany history after a two-year
stint at North Florida. He coordinated all recruiting efforts at UNF and aided in the
program’s transition to Division I, as the Ospreys just finished their second season at
the DI level.
Prior to his time at North Florida, Summey served for two years as an assistant coach
at The Citadel. In his first season, he worked with the perimeter players and helped
Matt Davis finish as the Southern Conference leader in three-point percentage (47.1).
The next year, Summey’s work with the post players played a key role in J’mel
Everhart becoming just the second Bulldog ever to earn Southern Conference AllTournament Team honors.
Summey’s coaching career also includes stops at Queens (N.C.) University in
Charlotte as the top assistant in 2003-04 and four seasons as an assistant at Saint
Francis (Pa.) University. His time at Saint Francis working with the perimeter players
was highlighted by three Red Flash players leading the Northeast Conference in threepoint percentage (2000, 2001, 2003).
A native of Hickory, N.C., Summey earned his bachelor’s degree in political science
from North Carolina State in 1997. It was during his undergraduate time at N.C. State
that his basketball career began. After working as the head undergraduate manager during
his senior year, he was a graduate manager for two years and assisted with then-head
coach Herb Sendek’s transition to N.C. State.

Coaching Staff
Matt Drahos is in his first season as an assistant coach with the
Bethany men’s program.
Drahos comes back to the program which he starred for from
2002-06. Drahos finished his career ranked second all-time in
scoring with 1,930 career points and first in rebounding with 926
boards, while also leading Bethany to two PAC championships and
a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament. As a senior, he was
named PAC Player of the Year, as well as Second Team AllAmerican by DIII News, after leading the conference in scoring
(22.8) and finishing second in rebounding (8.3). Following that
Matt Drahos
outstanding campaign, Drahos was also selected as one of 10
Assistant Coach finalists for the Jostens Trophy, which is given to the Division III
Player of the Year.
Prior to returning to serve on new Bethany head coach Mike Summey’s staff, Drahos
had been an assistant at Allegheny (Pa.) College for two years. He helped the Gators
post 12 victories in both seasons, which included an upset of perennial national power
Wittenburg (Ohio) University in the NCAC Tournament quarterfinals in 2008, the first
time the Tigers lost in the first round of the conference tournament in school history.
Drahos, who earned ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-American as a
senior, graduated from Bethany in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He
was the first men’s basketball player and just the fifth student-athlete in Bison history
to receive First Team Academic All-American distinction.
Serge Gentile
Assistant Coach
Serge Gentile is in his second year as an assistant at Bethany.
Gentile had a decorated high school playing career at nearby
Shadyside High School. He was All-OVAC and All-State for

games for a Purple Raider squad that went 18-9 that season.
After graduating from Mount Union with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Sports Management and a minor in business
administration in 2007, Gentile is currently working event
management for Scholastic Sports Marketing, who handles
marketing for the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.

2008-09 Preview
The Bethany men’s basketball team will embark on their second century of
play with quite a few new faces when they begin their quest of repeating as PAC
champions when the season opens Nov. 17 at home against LaRoche.
In their 100th season of varsity play last year, the Bison went 17-11 overall,
captured their 12th conference title in school history, a PAC record, and earned
their sixth bid to the NCAA Tournament. However, this year’s Bethany team will
go into the season with a new head coach in Mike Summey, a new assistant in
former Bison standout Matt Drahos and trying to replace their starting
backcourt in Brody Jackson (PAC MVP) and Marcus Adams (First Team AllPAC). Summey says the team has done a good job adapting to all the change
through the preseason.
“It’s been interesting and I’m learning a lot about the team,” said Summey,
who came to Bethany after a two-year stint as an assistant at Division I North
Florida University. “It’s an adjustment because
everyone on the team and everyone on the staff is
learning a new role. Because we have so many new
players, they are not only getting to know each
other but also getting to know what I want as their
coach. But the preseason has been great because we
are growing every day and getting more comfortable
with each other and what we want to do.”
Bethany was expected to have three starters back,
including two in the frontcourt. However, injuries
have already made an impact on the season, as
junior forward Ryan Besancon (left), who led the
team in blocked shots with 31 while averaging 8.4
points and 5.3 rebounds per game, is out until at
least December. In addition, junior forward Jonas Ankrom, who averaged 7.6
points and 3.1 rebounds in 23 games off the bench, will have to sit out the year
because of injury.
The Bison will have two experienced interior
players from the start this year in junior Joe Testa
and senior Petre Petkovski. Testa (right) averaged
9.1 points and a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game in
28 games last season, while Petkovski’s role was
coming off the bench for most of the year and
recording 9.6 points and 5.1 boards per game.
Two freshmen who are expected to contribute
down low include Jimmy Reeves and Tobi Akinsola,
while others looking for time in the frontcourt
include sophomore Kenny Barrows and freshman
Luke Flanagan .
8
2008-09 Preview
The BC backcourt has one
starter back in senior Tyler
Morando, who canned 60
three-pointers last season and
averaged 10.1 points per
game, second-highest on the
squad. Two other Bison return
after playing in all 28 games
last season, including senior
Carey Palermo (left) and
sophomore Dakota Matz
(right). Both Palermo (4.0
points, 1.7 assists) and Matz
(5.0 pts., 1.7 rebs.) have also been selected as captains this season by their
teammates.
Bethany could have a deep backcourt, as three others are vying for a spot in
the rotation, including junior Jay Lyonett (below left), who played in 12 games
last year, sophomore Ryan McFadden (below right), who came off the bench in
18 contests, and freshman Lance Beckwith.
The Bison have five other guards vying for action, including senior Milton
Joyner, junior transfer Jamal Jones, sophomore Dustin Opalka, who played in 11
games last year but is out until December because of injury, sophomore Nick
Thomas and freshman Ryan Summers.
Although his players are aiming towards the big prize of repeating as PAC
champions, Summey isn’t concerned with wins and losses as much as he is
getting better every day.
“At Bethany, our players’ goal is always to win the PAC championship,
especially having won last year,” said Summey. “I can’t think like that or in terms
of wins and losses because I don’t know the league or even my team well
enough yet. My goal is to continue to work hard, get better every day in
practice and hopefully that comes through in games.”

2007-08 Review
In their 100th season of varsity
competiton, the Bethany men’s
basketball team made it a year for the
record books, as they captured their
12th PAC championship in school
history and earned a bid to the NCAA
Tournament.
The Bison did not have the
look of a championship team
through the first half of the
2007-08 season. They opened
the year at the Mount
Aloysius Tournament and
settled for third place. After
dropping a 69-68 decision in
the opener to Allegheny,
despite 22 points from Brody
Jackson (right), BC bounced
back behind 26 points from
Petre Petkovski in a 108-96
triumph in the consolation game over
Mount Aloysius.
Bethany prepared for the start of
PAC play by sandwiching big victories
around a loss to a Division II program.
The Green and White opened their
home schedule by crushing PittGreensburg 92-59, as Petkovski
(below) dropped in 21. A week later,
the Bison, paced by Jackson’s 25
markers, battled Wheeling Jesuit on
the opening
night of the
Wendy’s
Classic to the
final buzzer
before
succumbing
81-78.
In their last
tune-up
before league
play started,
six different players scored in double
digits, as Bethany bounced past OhioEastern 93-75 on the final night of the
Classic.
The PAC portion of BC’s ledger got
off to a rocky start, as Thomas More,
who shot 64 percent in the second
half, surprised the Bison
87-78. Bethany was able
to bounce back by
rolling to victories at
Waynesburg and
against Geneva. In a
100-78 triumph over the
Yellow Jackets, BC hit 15
three-pointers and saw
seven different players
score 10 points or more
in their 11th straight win
over Waynesburg.
The 96-81 victory over Geneva,
which made Aaron Huffman just the
third head coach in Bethany history to
reach 100 wins, was sparked by 18
points from Jackson and a blazing 73
percent shooting in the second half, as
BC raised their record to 5-3.
Bethany’s second half against
Geneva was the last time the offense
looked sharp for awhile, as they
suffered consecutive losses to close
out the calendar year. Jackson had 23
points, but BC shot 34 percent in a 6865 setback at home against Penn StateAltoona. The Bison’s tough shooting
stretch continued when they hit just 42
percent of their attempts and were held
to a season-low for points in a 67-60
loss at LaRoche.
Bethany’s first game in the new year
looked very similar to how they ended
2007. Lake Erie limited the Bison to 39
percent accuracy from the field, as BC
20
2007-08 Review
dropped their third in a
row 73-70. The Green and
White returned to the PAC
battles in their next game
with a trip to Thiel. A 9-for11 shooting effort from Joe
Testa, who finished with
22 points and 11 rebounds,
led the way for Bethany to
claim a hard-fought 69-65
win on the road.
The Bison looked like
they would make it two in
a row when they held a nine-point
halftime lead over Saint Vincent at
home, but the Bearcats outscored BC
43-30 in the second half to take a 76-72
decision. Jackson recorded 24 points
in the setback which dropped his
team’s record to 6-7 at the midway
point of the campaign.
Over the past few seasons, Bethany
has become known for tearing off a
long winning streak in the middle of
the season. Possibly the most improbable place for BC to begin a string of
victories was Grove City, who was the
defending PAC champion and off to a
3-0 start in league play. But the Bison
put together possibly their best
performance of the season with a 73-53
triumph at GCC. Behind
Jackson’s 28 points and
Ryan Besancon’s (right)
22-point, 11-rebound
double-double, Bethany
was back to .500 and ready
to roll through the second
half of the season.
In their next outing, Tyler
Morando keyed an 81-72
victory at Franciscan by
rifling in a career-high 27
21
and the winning streak
reached three with a 102-61
blasting of Westminster,
which was sparked by
double-doubles from
Besancon (14 pts., 10
rebs.) and Testa (14 pts., 12
rebs.).
The Bison doubled their
streak to six games by
coming out victorious in
three straight close
contests. Jackson (27) and
Marcus Adams (above-23) accounted
for every point in overtime during an
86-83 triumph at W&J. That was
followed by a 77-76 nail-biter at
Thomas More. Morando hit for 17, but
it was a rebound and putback from
Petkovski with 11 seconds left that
provided the winning points.
The next win shouldn’t have been a
close call, as BC nearly let a 24-point
halftime lead get away before escaping
with an 82-78 victory over
Waynesburg. Jackson, who had 30 in
the Waynesburg win, would reach a
milestone when Bethany traveled to
Geneva. The 6-0 guard drained five of
the team’s 16 three-pointers in an 87-62
win and with 21 points in the game, he
became the 21st men’s
player in school history to
surpass 1,000 career points.
The Bison’s winning
streak hit eight when Testa
accounted for 22 points
and 11 boards in a 92-67
triumph over Thiel at home.
Bethany would take the
winning streak to Saint
Vincent, but suffered their
first defeat in exactly one
2007-08 Review
month when the Bearcats squeezed
past the Bison 77-76.
The loss didn’t hurt BC in the
conference standings, who stood one
win away from clinching the top seed
in the PAC Tournament. With
Morando (right) recording 17 points
and Testa (below) notching 14 markers
and 13 boards, the Bison secured the
top spot by beating Grove City 78-61.
With two games left in the regular
season, BC was looking to build
momentum for the conference playoffs,
but instead would limp toward PACs
after a 79-77
loss at
Westminster.
The regular
season finale
versus W&J
was also the
100th
Anniversary
celebration,
but the
Presidents
put a damper
on the festivities by knocking off the
Bison 73-70.
By earning the top seed for the PAC
Tournament, Bethany also earned a
bye into the semifinals, where they
would meet up with Thomas More.
The Bison took a 10-point halftime lead
and made 32 free throws in the contest
to move on with a 105-98 victory.
The championship game brought the
rubber match with W&J in front of a
raucous crowd at Hummel Field House.
Eight three-pointers in the first half
staked BC out to a 37-28 lead and
Jackson took over in the second half.
The PAC MVP scored 22 of his game-
high 30
points in the
second half,
as Bethany
pulled away
for a 90-76
triumph to
win their
conferencerecord 12th
PAC championship.
The Bison
also punched their ticket to the NCAA
Tournament with the victory and
earned a trip to Capital in the first
round. Bethany played well early,
running out to a 26-20 advantage
midway through the first half. However, the Crusaders seized control by
scoring 30 of the half’s final 36 points
to take a 50-32 lead at the break. BC
was never able to move closer then 16
in the second half and saw their
season come to an end with a 92-70
loss.
The Bison starting backcourt of
Adams and Jackson (below) picked up
numerous honors following the
season. Adams earned First Team AllPAC accolades, while Jackson added
to his
conference
Player of the
Year laurels
with First
Team AllRegion
recognition
from
D3Hoops.com
and the
NABC.

Facilities
Hummel Field House is home to the Bethany basketball programs, as well as
the Bison volleyball team. This arena has hosted numerous PAC Tournament
contests through the years, as well as the Bison women’s NCAA Tournament
first round games in 2002 and 2004. The Field House saw extensive renovations
prior to the 2002 school year, as a new floor and new bleachers were installed.
The bleachers, which can seat up to 800, combined with the balcony area that
gives standing room for up to a couple hundred more, can lead to an
advantageous home court atmosphere for the Bison.
The Field House is connected to the Thomas Phillips Johnson Health &
Recreation Center, which was built in 1994. This facility enables student-athletes
to train for an array of varsity sports and is also where the majority of Bethany’s
intramural programs are held. The Center includes constantly updated weight
rooms, the John J. Knight natatorium (below left), racquetball courts and
Sandwen Arena (below right), which has an indoor running track and three fullsize courts that can be used for basketball, volleyball and tennis.
