Issue #3 May - June An insight into the life of the Church in touch Nepal Outreach “At times like this, creed and colour pale into insignificance” At the time of writing almost 6,000 lives have been lost in the Nepalese earthquake and 8000,000 lives have been impacted by this tragedy. 8,000,000 is one third of the population of Nepal, which puts this disaster into some kind of perspective. We wanted our church to be a place in where people could come to pray, be quiet and reflect all that had taken place over the weekend of 25/26th April. To this end, the following week our church doors were opened and people invited to come in, light a candle, reflect and write a message in a condolence book that will eventually be passed on to leaders in the Nepalese community. We continue to pray for those who have lost family, friends, property and livelihood and we particularly remember our Nepalese neighbours here who are still awaiting news of loved ones. There will be a book of condolence f or t hose im pact ed by t he earthquake in Nepal which you are welcome to sign. There’s a lot of waiting around that doesn’t seem logical. It’s not surprising that it took the disciples a while to come to terms with the reality and the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus. The empty tomb was either baffling or a cruel joke by Jesus’ enemies. The first rumors of people meeting the risen Jesus were unbelievable. The eventual meetings were completely life-changing. Surely this was the moment to shout it from the roof tops that Jesus is alive. Yet Jesus says wait. Wait for his moment not ours. Wait for the power from on high. The first disciples didn’t even know what that was. Learning to move in Jesus’ time not our own (or anyone else’s) is a skill that saves us from a lot of grief if only we can master it. Waiting is not just doing nothing or passing the time. It’s waiting for God, it’s quietening our lives so we can hear the small still voice of the spirit. It’s allowing the Holy Spirit to get us ready for the challenges ahead. It has more in common with the athlete in training than the couch potato At the moment, I’m finding waiting for the next phase of ministry frustrating. There are all sorts of good things to finish off, but it’s hard to focus. All sorts of precious relationships that it’s hard to invest in when you’re moving on. All sorts of questions about ‘what next’ that I want to jump in and find answers to. The time between one ministry ending and another beginning is an important time for working out how you’ve changed. Like packing the house, it’s important to work out what to take to the tip and what to pack carefully because it’s important to carry it with you. If like me. You’re in a waiting phase at the moment – take extra care to hear what God is saying in it. Don’t let impatience deafen you to some vital things that God needs you to learn. Family Worker Corner Carrie Addison WOW – Are we really in May!? It’s almost a year since I became the Family worker here at North Camp and I’d love to share my thoughts with you. The more and more I think about it, the more I realise how God has been preparing me for this role for most of my life. As a child growing up I was always around my parents who were either involved in Children’s work, Marriage Prep or enrichment, Girls & Boys Brigade, and my mum was even the church administrator for a few years which meant I spent a lot of time after school in the church office. My parents also started up and lead Family based home groups where the friends we made are still considered good family friends today. So without having a clue back then, I had no idea that God was going to eventually place me in a church in Farnborough, UK and make me the Family worker here. It really does still blow my mind how he works his wonders in each of our lives if we allow him. I learnt so much from my own parents and have plenty to thank them for. They were my strength and even through my journey of own discovery in Christ, they always supported and prayed for me. I really don’t think you can ever under estimate the power of a praying parent. I realise that not all of us may have been brought up in a church environment but I also know that for those of us with children and grandchildren that we are the examples for the next generation and it’s important that we show them how to do it. I look at my own girls and one day I will want to hand over the baton to them to lead church and I need to be equipping them on a regular basis by guiding them and showing them the ropes. Sometimes it’s not what we tell our kids that helps them grow in Christ – it’s watching us do life with Christ in a loving real way that will help their own relationship. We need to serve so that our children will serve, we need to lead so our children will lead, we need to pray so our children will pray and we need to love and support them in their own journeys with Christ because ultimately God is planning it now and making their paths to him. CS Lewis said that “One road leads home and a thousand lead to the wilderness”. We are only human but lets try and show our children how to stay the path by us being what we would like them to become. #BeKind #BeLove #Pray #StaythePath Please can I ask you to pray for the work I’m am doing and the following areas of the Family Ministry. The Children’s Ministry Leaders and Volunteers. The Adopt a Grandparent Project. Mothers & Toddlers. Parentalk. Holiday Club. Connecting more with local schools and community. On a personal note could I please ask you to pray for my family as we will be moving house and this can sometimes be unsettling and stressful. Please pray for my children Talyn and Jade during this process. Upcoming >>> The problem with parenting is that by the time we get the hang of it – we’re redundant! Parenting is a mixture of highs and lows and everything in between. It can bring some of life’s biggest joys, but also it’s greatest challenges. For most of us, a bit of encouragement and a reminder that we are not alone can make a real difference. In six sessions, Parentalk looks at the topics that affect just about every family, including the busyness of family life, understanding children’s ‘Love Languages’, speaking and listening, how best to set boundaries, preparing children for the outside world, and the importance of family time. Starting Tuesday 2nd June at North Camp Methodist. 7pm Contact Carrie Addison to find out more or to book your place. – [email protected] We will also be needing volunteers to help facilitate the course as well as the possibility of some baby sitters so please let us know if you can help on these nights. We spent Easter at the Wellington Memorial on a “treasure hunt” and recently joined in the VE Day celebrations in Aldershot. Next Event: Den Building at Deepcut on 11 July 2015 Want to know more, speak to Dave Betts or Ken Evans A Deluge of Angels ('Yarn-bomb' ) We are joining with other churches in the area to ensure that residents in North Camp will wake up on Christmas morning and be cheered up by the sight of colourful angels clinging to railings, lampposts and front doors - this will be the result of an early “yarn-bombing” by church volunteers. We are inviting everyone to get busy with your knitting needles to help knit at least a 1,000 woolly angels ready to hit the streets on Christmas Eve. These will be our gift to our community and the fortunate finders, each handmade angel will have a little tag bearing one of 12 different messages of hope, the #xmasangels link and words ‘please take me’. As Christmas becomes increasingly commercialised, let’s make a difference and ensure the “yarn-bomb’s” success. More information from Ruth Tipping and David Betts Let’s get knitting! We would like to encourage a prayer partnering between families and Grandparents and start to build relationships so that we can become one big family. As a family in the church, you may need a wiser person to take you under their wing. Perhaps your family is new to the church or new to the faith. On the other hand as a Grandparent you may need help and support and the family could also be a blessing to you. For further details – please pick up a brochure in the welcome area. What Happening >>> Minibus Update…. Before we can start the Minibus pick-up and drop-off scheme we need to have all drivers complete the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) This will take some time so we have put the scheme on hold until September. We know who needs lifts and we are now looking for drivers to help get the scheme up and running. If you can help please speak to Denise White. Alpha Update….
