Classroom News
Hello Parents/Guardians!
October is quickly drawing to a close and November is right
around the corner. I would like to remind parents that now that
colder weather is here, please make sure your child is coming
to school prepared for outside weather conditions. Long pants
and jackets are needed at this time of the year, and maybe
even some gloves!
The town of Killingly has several events going on for children to
have fun celebrating Halloween. There is the 3rd Annual Fright
night on Broad Street happening on Friday, October 31st and
Saturday, November 1st from 6:30-10:00pm. There is also a
pancake breakfast this Saturday, Oct. 25th at St. Joseph’s Hall.
Both events are to support the Killingly High School Music
Department. For details on these events please see “Important
Dates” on the left side of this newsletter.
Another exciting event happening right here at KCS is our PBIS
Family Night happening on Thursday, November 6th from 6:307:45pm in the auditorium. Teachers have selected several
students from each class to be presenters at this event. Please
see the pink flyer that was sent home in today’s Friday Folder
for more information about this fun family event!
Sincerely, Mrs. Borges 

What We’re Learning
Reading: Practiced making mental movies in our
mind as we read our independent texts; practiced
reading with expression with a partner to help ourselves
live in the world of our story; practiced empathizing with
our characters by making connections to characters’
thoughts, feelings, and experiences; practiced paying
attention to characters’ actions, thoughts/feelings, and
dialogue to notice when our image of a character
changes; practiced our skills reading nonfiction texts
and identifying evidence that supports an author’s main
ideas; engaged in lively discussions about characters
and vocabulary words we came across in our readaloud novel, The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate
DiCamillo.
Math: Continued identifying number or shape
pattern rules and determined if they were growing or
repeating, reviewed concepts on multiplicative
comparisons, solving multi-step word problems, and
finding factors and multiples; completed a test yesterday
on Unit 1-Operations and Algebraic Thinking.
Writing: Continued planning and began drafting
our narratives; worked on weaving together action,
thought, and dialogue so that our readers can visualize
our story and feel as if they are right there experiencing
it as a character; examined published books to record
our observations of when authors use new paragraphs
in their writing- ToPATS (when the topic changes, place
changes, action changes, time changes, or speaker
changes); working on applying our new learning to our
own writing by identifying where we needed to begin
new paragraphs.
Language: reviewed simple subjects and
complete
subjects,
simple predicates
and complete
