POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and in accordance with the YMCA Mission Statement
and purpose of the policies of the Dixon Family YMCA, the Head Coach will be responsible for
the safety, and well-being of participants on the Swim Team. Must a have a good understand
of the “Rules That Govern YMCA Competitive Sports” which is based on fair-play. Understand
the Y mission, goals, and the needs of the community being served. Offer a positive image to
the community, teaching and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Dependability and promptness are necessary, as well as the ability to present a mature,
professional and personable image. Good administrative, organizational, and supervisory skills.
Good written and verbal communication skills. This position requires current certifications in
CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid Certification, Red Cross Training for Swim Coaches
Certification, and Principals of YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving. Ability to function as a
member of the YMCA staff team, developing cooperative working relationship with other fulltime and part-time employees, and lay leaders. When on duty, be neat, well-groomed and
properly attired. This position involves development of Dixon Dolphins Swim Team. Provide
leadership to assistant coaches, teen leaders, and adult volunteers.
Specific Job Tasks
1. Ability to function as a member of the YMCA staff team, developing cooperative working
relationships with other full-time and part-time employees, and lay leaders.
2. Coaching must have a vision of our programs for short and long term.
3. Teach and demonstrate the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all
relationships. Be a positive role model to others.
4. Organizing entries in advance of all meets and enter data into the computer. Head coach is
also responsible for setting up the swim team schedule and making sure that everything has
been confirmed. Also works with program Director to make sure that sponsors and suits and tshirts have been ordered. Ulimate responsible for all aspects of the swim team.
5. Enthusiastically promote the Dixon Swim Team to the community.
6. Ability to function as a member of the YMCA staff team, developing cooperative working
relationships with supervisor, other full-time employees, volunteers, and lay leaders.
7. Work with swim team volunteers, officials, scorekeepers, and timers at all swim meets.
Lead the Advisory Committee with all fundraising functions for the Swim Team.
8. Maintain on going communication with your supervisor and parent volunteers.
10. As a coach you are responsible for preventing injuries by minimizing or eliminating
hazardous situations and potential dangers before they happen either at the YMCA or off site.
Have necessary equipment available to handle any emergency.
11. Coach all assigned practices. Arrive 10 minutes before practices. .
12. Be prepared to conduct and have workouts for assistance.
13. Organizing entries in advance of all meets. Be on deck for all assigned swim meets during
the season. Head coach has duties assigned to assistance coaches.
14. Keep abreast of all cluster, district, state, and national rules and guidelines to insure
correct compliance.
19. Attend all required swim coaches training. Continued education in coaching is strongly
encouraged. All trainings will be approved by Program Director. Get assistance in training has
well as the head coach.
20. Conduct yourself as a professional rescuer and model proper behavior at all times. No
reading, telephone call, cell phones, IPod, or conversations/activities that will take your
attention away from the pool. No CELL PHONE OR IPOD ON THE POOL DECK AT ALL.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and
Emergency Oxygen, Red Cross Coaches Safety Training and Principles of Competitive
Swimming and Diving. Must be Lifegaurd certification. Must have all the USA requirements
for a head coach.
2. Must be able to demonstrate coaches’ safety skills in accordance with Red Cross Standards.
3. At least 21 years of age.
4. Require to keep the certifications current.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Ability to work the swim team practices and organize for the assistance.
2. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
3. Ability to perform safety skills according to the Coaches Safety Training.
4. Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
5. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
6. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
7. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
8. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act
swiftly in an emergency
9. Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
10. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
11. Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
Hours:
This is a seasonal, hourly position with a schedule of hours set and agreed upon between the
YMCA supervisor and the employee. May not exceed 25 hours without supervisor approval a
week during the season and only about 10 hours a week in the off season.
