Decompose numbers to ten using manipulatives and fingers to build addition and subtraction fluency. Identify 52 upper and lowercase letters, as well as 33 letter sounds. Ask and answer questions about a text in order to retell stories and identify characters and setting. Listen to their child count orally two to three times a week and count objects such as coins, beans, cheerios, buttons, etc. Practice with child making number combinations to ten (i.e. 3 and 4 is 7, 2 and 5 is 7) and use objects around the house to visually show the combinations. Use/make letter flash cards to play games, such as Memory, Go Fish, Letter Hunts (hide cards around the house, search for letters in magazines, books, advertisements). For these games, students can tell you the letter names and/or sounds. Read to/with your child every day and discuss what you read. Ask questions about the story and let them ask you questions. Have your child retell what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story with details. Clarkdale Students Clarkdale students joined staff and parents to develop ideas about how they can succeed in school and become champions in math and English Language Arts. Students thought of the following ideas to make connections between learning at home and school. Practice rote counting to 100 using songs and counting quantities of objects using manipulatives. What is a School-Parent Compact? This School-Parent Compact for Achievement is an agreement that parents, students, and teachers develop together. It explains how parents and teachers will work together to make sure all of our students reach grade-level standards. An Effective Compact: Focuses on student learning skills Shares strategies parents can use at home Explains how teachers and parents will communicate about student progress Describes how teachers will help students develop those skills using high quality instruction Describes opportunities for parents to volunteer, observe, and participate in the classroom Jointly Developed The parents, students and staff of Clarkdale Elementary School developed this School-Parent Compact for Achievement. Teachers suggested learning strategies, parents added ideas to make them more specific, and students told us what would help them learn. Meetings are held each year to review the compact and make changes based on student needs. Parents are welcome to contribute comments at any time. If you would like to participate and/or observe in the classroom, please contact your student(s) teacher at 770-819-2422 or through his or her email.
