The framework
The social dimension has become a fundamental element of
sustainable management (SM). Keeping local communities informed
becomes relevant as a central component of social and
environmental sustainability
At today agricultural policy and planning needs to be aware of people’s
perception of agriculture and of the issues related to this topic, and to
take into consideration the entire range of values attributed thereto.

Stakeholders involvement
The overall activities will create a positive local environment
regarding the effort to fight against the soil degradation causes
and to improve the public attitude and behavior concerning soil
management in all EU Regions.
The community involvement, after knowing its perception on soil
threats, will definitely be more effective and allow a broader
responsibility mitigating the phenomenon.
On the other hand, being also an extremely important aspect,
knowledge of the perception around measure usefulness can
provide information on facts and elements.

MONITORING
Monitoring supports decision-makers in understanding the current state of
environment
Monitoring also supports the development and implementation of future
soil and environmental policy and management
Monitoring helps the early identification of the land degradation
problems, providing sufficient time to policy makers to intervene
All along the decision process, monitoring means informing
stakeholders, as well as collecting their perception, around the
problem analysed

RAISING PUBLIC AWARENESS
Stakeholders need to understand the effects of soil threats.

Stakeholders will be involved in the development of management
guidelines or intervention plans.

Methods
Survey on perception of the effectiveness and usefulness of soil protection
measures with the use of questionnaire.
Questionnaires will be submitted to farmers through a face to face interview, to
investigate their perception about measures.
A questionnaire has been structured with closed-ended questions.
The results will be published in national media (newspapers and on web-portal)

Stakeholders will be able to supply comments for the whole duration of the
project

Methods
Focus Groups to explain and discuss the effects and magnitude of the
threats and to collect perceptions.
Stakeholders will be informed about critical environmental threats and
involved in the design procedure of management or intervention plans.
Raising public awareness
Public opinion survey on soil degradation with the use of questionnaires .
A questionnaire will be submitted to potential users through a face to face
interview, to summarize the causes of soil degradation in their region.

Methods
Publicity campaign, including the organization of regional
conferences and public meetings where LRAs, media and
stakeholders will be invited to participate, and the project
results and state of the project progress will be illustrated.
Publishing of a three-monthly news bulletin.

Dissemination
Create a Hand-book on good practices against the soil degradation
process for soil users. It will be disseminated by electronic format and
it will also be made available to all potential users.
Create and disseminate an annual technical publication and a video
about the project for all stakeholders

Questionnaire on perception of the effectiveness and usefulness of soil
protection measures
Target: Sample of farmers
Method of survey: questionnaire submitted through face to face interview
Questionnaire design: 22 closed-form questions
Pre-test: a pre-test of the survey will be conducted
Comments and amendments arising from the pre-test will be incorporated.
