Professional Development Chairperson's message,
Agency is not another program to be implemented, but a deep and meaningful shift in the
responsibilities and roles that educators play in their learning and in the relationships that
educators have with each other.
Our Summer Institute offers a wide range of workshops that develop agency and meet the
personalized approach to professional development. Our presenters have been asked to
tell their story while keeping in mind that participants will be in the process of
developing their own stories through collaborative inquiry, professional development and
learning over the upcoming year. This institute is the start or continuation of a journey
that we all take to meet the needs of our learners.
If we want our students to engage in rich, creative learning experiences that lead to
mastery, then we must provide educators with rich, creative learning experiences that
lead to mastery.
Yours in professional development,
Joe

Moving Forward in Inclusive Planning:
The Goals / The Supports
Presenter: Shelley Moore
Tuesday, August 29
Time: 8:30 am – 2:30 pm
Location: KSS - GYM
Based in Vancouver, Shelley Moore’s research interests
integrate theory and practice of inclusive education, special
education, curriculum and teacher professional development.
She is particularly interested in how students with
developmental and intellectual disabilities can be included
meaningfully while also contributing to the learning of their
peers. Shelley has presented her work at various conferences
throughout North America including CEC, IRA, CSSE and
NCTE. She completed her undergraduate degree in Special
Education at the University of Alberta, her masters at Simon
Fraser University, and is currently a PhD student at the
University of British Columbia.
Part 1: Moving Forward in Inclusive Planning: The Goals
In part 1 of this session, we will introduce and build on Caren Cameron & Kathleen Gregory’s ‘learning map,’ as a possible
inclusive planning and assessment strategy. We will also take some time to deconstruct examples of how classrooms and
schools throughout BC are planning and implementing inclusive teaching and learning practices to respond to, and meet the
needs of their, diverse learners!
Part 2: Moving Forward in Inclusive Planning: The Supports
In part 2, we will look at how collaborative teams can design a classroom support plan. Building on frameworks of RTI and
UDL, we will look at examples of how classrooms and schools are adapting to (and thriving from) the changing roles of
support staff and ever evolving resource models in inclusive classrooms and schools.
This presentation is brought to you by
the Central Okanagan Teachers’ Association and School District No. 23

Wisdom from the Wilderness - The power and importance of your personal story
Presenter: Andrew Portwood
This workshop is both a narrative of my own extreme teaching career story, as well as a vessel
with which to share 7 key elements I have adopted along the way, that continue to guide my
work with teachers and students facing very challenging behaviours. Following this, I guide
participants through a process of identifying the most important lessons they have learned thus
far, and that speak clearly to them. Every teacher is on their own unique journey, and will have
experiences and lessons that contain their own wisdom, and that students want to hear and feel.
My story began as a first year teacher at a rural boys’ boarding school in the early 2000s, where
100km hikes and 3 week canoe trips to the ocean were the norm. The unique culture of bravado
there also exposed many of my own personal triggers and weaknesses however, and sparked an
unexpected journey that culminated in a life-changing classroom experience with kids labelled as
“dangerous” and unsuitable for any other classroom in the city of Calgary. We will examine how
I survived, how I became not only a far better teacher but a better person as a result, and how
every teacher ALSO has their own powerful story to embrace and share, even if they haven’t
(until now) actually written it down yet. Numerous tales, photos, and videos will help make this
both an entertaining and insightful 2 day session.

Introduction to Mindfulness Practices for Teachers
Presenter: Lama Yeshe [Day 1 of 3 – not required to attend all 3 days]
This one day session is offered by Lama Yeshe, a Western Buddhist monk, based in
Chandirgarh, India. Lama Yeshe is a qualified mindfulness master with over 30 years of
experience teaching “secular” approaches of mindfulness practices. Participants will better
understand mindfulness and be able to plan various practices for their classroom. The purpose of
these practices is to help students be more settled, open minded, alert and ready to learn.

Karma Yeshe Rabgye is a Western Buddhist Monk in the Kagyu
tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Originally from England, he now
lives in Ashoka Buddhist Temple, Khuda Ali Sher, Northern India,
where he teaches Buddhism and meditation classes to people of all
ages.
Yeshe took ordination vows from H.E, Tai Situ Rinpoche in
Sherabling Monastery, Northern India and has studied with H.H. the
14th Dalai Lama, H.H. the 17th Kamapa, H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche
Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse
Rinpoche, Drupon Khengo Lodro Namgial, Geshe Sonam Rinchen
and Geshe Tashi Tsering. Having received teachers and studied
works of all traditions of Buddhism, The Best Way to Catch a Snake
was inspired by successive short-term retreats in which Yeshe took
the Buddha Shakyamuni’s early teachings as his inspiration for
practice.
He initially came to India as a student of Buddhism, learning from the great Tibetan Buddhist masters in
exile. His Western background forced him to question some difficult elements of the teachings, in particular
to distinguish those teachings that were essential aspects of the path from those that were mere cultural
embellishments. 'Life's Meandering Path', stems from this questioning and is aimed at a more secular and
skeptical audience.
Karma Yeshe Rabgye spent several years in a monastery in the foothills of the Himalayas teaching young
monks basic Buddhist philosophy and meditation. He now offers teachings freely to all in a manner that is
unpretentious and clear. He does not demand students to blindly accept what he says, but instead invites
them to examine their own minds and experience to discover the validity of Gautama Buddha's teaching.
Using everyday examples, he has the ability to bring the teachings alive, particularly to a younger audience
seeking to make Buddhism relevant in their lives. His approachable manner has attracted many students who
appreciate his sense of humour and practical advice.
Karma Yeshe Rabgye quietly demonstrates Gautama Buddha's teaching on compassion through the
charitable trust 'Sangye Menla' that he founded in 2008 in Chandigarh, Northern India. The trust provides
medical assistance and care to people from the Himalayan region in India.

Math and the Redesigned Curriculum; practical strategies to engage learners
Presenters: Kendra Jacobs and Blake Smith
Unlike the math instruction many of us recall (insert unpleasant memories here) a problem
solving based inquiry is a synthesis of meaningful problems (drawn from real contexts), teacherled mini-lessons (based upon the struggles students are encountering), and games and puzzles (to
support student curiosity and make connections to real life). We will highlight several engaging
and innovative trends that will change the landscape of teaching and learning in mathematics,
while addressing both curricular and core competencies.
This model provides students with the necessary skills to read a problem, choose from a variety
of appropriate strategies, apply a strategy to solve the problem, and then reflect on the efficiency
and accuracy of the strategy to explain the answer. Together, we will change the way our
students think, reason and prove in mathematics. More importantly, we will enhance their
positive feelings and confidence with mathematics. In this session, teachers will have an
opportunity to further their mathematical teaching pedagogy and begin planning for the year
ahead in their respective unique teaching environments.

Inquiry Based Teaching and Learning K-12
Presenter: Marnie Birkeland
Inquiry-based learning is an approach to teaching and learning that places students’ questions,
ideas and observations at the center of the learning experience. Educators play an active role
throughout the process by establishing a culture where ideas are respectfully challenged, tested,
redefined and viewed as improvable, moving students from a position of wondering to a position
of understanding and further questioning. How can we create a culture of inquiry in our own
classrooms? During this workshop, we will explore ideas to help us provoke our students
thinking (across grades and content areas) and then develop a culture of inquiry to honour those
questions and put our students at the center of their own learning. Time will be given to apply
this learning to your own context.

Inquiry in the Classroom, a shared experience
Presenter: Kim Ito
Come join me as we co-learn, collaborate, and co-create and discover the benefits of inquiry
learning and project based learning (PBL) and its assessment. We will discuss the role of selfassessment, self-reflection and open-ended questioning, as well as how to establish a classroom
environment that encourages a growth mindset. Together we will discuss how we can implement
inquiry in a cross-curricular manner, and how we can differentiate instruction to benefit all
learners in our classrooms. I suggest that teachers register for this workshop with a grade or
school colleague(s), as it will lead to more meaningful collaboration and planning. Come
prepared to share your own experiences and learn from your colleagues.

Leaning in... Is Empowerment the Key to a New Future?
Presenter: Lori Hazel
Students need the skills that will better help them to navigate their world, both now and in the
future. We are at an all-time high of students presenting with high anxiety, stress, depression,
addiction, emotional struggles, self-esteem issues, burnout, self-harm, eating disorders, etc. Our
students require the techniques, strategies, and tools necessary to know and empower
themselves, to discover who they are, and how to be the best version of that person in all
realms. It is in tuning into ourselves, and learning what self-care looks like, that we can learn to
be successful personally in order to meaningfully contribute to our world.
