JOB DESCRIPTION
QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD (attained, or soon to be attained) in applied mathematics or related discipline with significant
mathematical content, and experience in mathematical modelling techniques for applied problems.
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The successful candidate will undertake research in the Mathematical Modelling of Sustainable Electrical
Energy Systems, and be responsible for liaising between MACSI (Mathematics Applications Consortium
for Science and Industry) and the engineering and economics partners within the SEES (Sustainable
Electrical Energy Systems) Strategic Research Cluster.

DESCRIPTION:
The SEES Strategic Research Cluster brings together multidisciplinary expertise to tackle fundamental
applied research and demonstration challenges to underpin the emergence of future integrated, smart
and sustainable electrical energy systems, while MACSI is dedicated to solving real problems that arise in
industry and science using world-class research in mathematical modelling. The successful candidate will
be based in the MACSI group at the University of Limerick, under the guidance of Prof James Gleeson
and Dr William Lee.
He/she will take responsibility for mathematical modelling tasks of mutual interest to MACSI and SEES
partners. These tasks could include, but are not limited to;






Interdependencies of energy systems, including blackout cascades.
Forecasting under uncertainty.
Modelling, control, and stability analysis.
Transmission investment planning.
Mathematical analysis of optimisation tools for mixed-integer problems.
Fundamental methods for agent-based models of product uptake.
Essential Requirements




PhD (attained, or soon to be attained) in applied mathematics or related discipline with significant
mathematical content.
Strong analytical and computational skills.
Experience of mathematical modelling for applied problems.
Experience of collaboration with engineering and/or industry.
