The OISC Academy Experience Coaching Staff at OISC U9/U10

The OISC Academy Experience
Immerse yourself in soccer excellence
Creativity
Technique
Skill Development
Want the definitive soccer training experience? OISC’s U9/U10 Soccer Academy offers it in the form of a
new soccer training program for players born in 2006 and 2007. This new 14-week soccer training
program, will emphasize improvisation, creativity, technique, and ball control through the use of smallsided games to help create a more complete soccer player. This program is geared towards those
players who are interested in improving their skills and considering playing competitive soccer in 2017
and is a fantastic opportunity to further develop your child.
OISC’s Academy programs follows the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model ensuring players
are technically ready for competitive soccer in the future. LTAD considers the best interests of the
athlete, not the goals of coaches or parents who might simply want to win at all costs. LTAD is based on
sport research, coaching best practices from around the world, and scientific principles. LTAD expresses
these principles, research, and practices as 10 Key Factors essential to athlete development.
The new Academy program is a complement to the existing DSP program, not a replacement. It is
targeted for those players who are considering playing competitive and want additional training.
Players would still train weekly and participate in the Festivals with their respective DSP teams. The
Academy Program runs on a different night.
The program, designed specifically for 9 and 10-year olds, was developed under the guidance of OISC’s
club head coach. The coaching philosophy will continue to be structured around (1) Maximum
Participation, (2) Emphasis on Learning, (3) Focus on Fun, and (4) Coaching Positively.
Coaching Staff at OISC U9/U10 Academy
The Academy coaching staff embraces the LTAD philosophy and are committed to youth development,
training, and coaching. They bring a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the Academy.
Academy Staff Coaches:
The staff coaches for the U9/U10 Academy will work in conjunction with our club competitive girls and
boys staff coaches as well as our former club head coach. The weekly training programs are developed
under the guidance and assistance of coaches Jojo Maalouf, and Peter Menyasz.
Jojo Maalouf – Girls Staff Coach: Jojo has been playing competitive soccer for over 20 years. He has
played at the highest levels in the city both at the youth and adult level. He has brought his passion and
energy for the game to coaching with the goal of teaching kids the technical skill required to become a
successful soccer player. Jojo has received his LTAD coaching certification.
Peter Menyasz – Boys Staff Coach: Peter has been coaching soccer for more than 20 years with age
groups from U4 through U18, and at the competitive level for 15 years, originally starting with OISC in
2001. He has earned the Ontario Pre-B license, U.S. Soccer National Youth license and NCCP Level 3
certification, as well as all stages of LTAD certification. He has been a Learning Facilitator and a LongTerm Player Development Champion with the Ontario Soccer Association. While coaching is his passion,
Peter also currently serves on the boards of the Eastern Ontario District Soccer Association and the East
Region Soccer League.
Roy Hillier – Former Club Head Coach: (MPE, BPE, Senior OSA Staff Coach, National B License Coach,
Canadian Forces Sports Hall of Fame). Roy is an Ontario Soccer Association Master Learning Facilitator
as well as a learning facilitator for the Ontario Coaching Association program and the National Coaching
Certification programs.
Roy is a legend within the Canadian Forces sporting community. His outstanding reputation as an
athlete, coach, team-builder and ambassador began very early in his career. Throughout his career, he
was involved in broomball, flag football, gymnastics (high box), competitive weightlifting, hockey, judo
and soccer.
He competed at no less than 38 Canadian Forces Regional and National Sports Championships, along
with five civilian provincial and national events and two international competitions during his time in the
military, winning 32 medals over his career.
Roy’s true passion however was in the coaching and developing of others. He coached his first team
shortly after joining the Canadian Forces in 1964, and has coached and fostered athletic development at
all levels, including military, community, university, provincial, national, and international.
As a staff coach and course conductor for the Ontario Soccer Association, he has certified over 1,000
soccer coaches. In addition, as a course conductor for the National Coaching Certification Program of
Canada, Roy has certified more than 5,000 coaches. Roy has 11 years experience coaching at the
University level.
Training Through Small-sided Games
The style of the coaching in the Academy is player-centered and includes a guided discovery teaching
method versus the old traditional style of “yell and tell.” Players are included in the learning process and
are encouraged to solve problems for themselves. The Academy coaches will communicate and provide
positive help, support and training to all players.
The training sessions are based around a progressive sessions of simplified small-sided games in training
rather than drills. A holistic game-centered approach ensures the integration of technical, physical and
tactical elements that is proven to be much more effective than the old analytical method.
Benefits of small sided games in training
•
More touches of the ball
•
Simpler decisions to make
•
Better game-related fitness, short duration of high-intensity vs laps
•
More time with coach per player
•
Easier to coach
•
More opportunities to solve game problems
•
More attacking opportunities (dribbling, shooting, passing)
•
More defending opportunities
•
More shooting and more goals = more fun!
•
More opportunities for the full range of skills
•
Encourages awareness of team-mates
•
Encourages faster play, fast transition from defense to attack
•
Easier for young players to have success – which means more enjoyment
The emphasis is always on games for learning rather than drills and running as players prefer to play
games than to do drills (especially the younger ones). The games can be modified through different
variables to concentrate more on specific elements that need to be addressed; the size of the playing
area, the number of players, duration of the game, technical rules, etc., means that in the hands of a
skilful coach, games may be used to achieve all the requirements of playing the real game. Small sided
games also provide a much more intense physical workout than larger games and also allow the coach
to develop the players Game Intelligence, as they may focus on the true dynamics of the game of soccer
e.g. the 2v1 situation.
