Competition Packet 2015

ELITE COMPETITION TEAMS
Informational Packet
2015 Dance Competition Experience
FRIENDLY REMINDER ~ Competitions are only open to Elite Dancers that are also enrolled in Technique
Plus. If you want to attend a competition, but are not yet enrolled in Technique plus, please contact
our Office Admin about the possibility of starting Technique Plus. You must be enrolled in a Technique
Class by mid-October to be eligible.
UCD remains “low key” about Competitions, and enjoys being able to offer the girls the experience of a
Dance Competition without the stress of a typical competition atmosphere. Below we have all the
information you need to help you decide if your dancer can participate.
MANDATORY REHEARSALS
Your dancer must attend two additional classes (one 75-minute and one 60-minute class). Schedules are
listed below each Competition. All additional Competition Rehearsals, your weekly dance classes,
and your Technique Plus classes during these three weeks are MANDATORY in order for you to
participate in the Competition. We need to be fair to the entire team, so no exceptions can be made
about missing these Rehearsals, unless extreme circumstances occur.
Competition schedules (days and times) are usually not set until two weeks prior to the Competition.
UCD will inform all dance families of any updated schedule news as soon as it becomes available to us.
Unfortunately, you will need to decide if your child can participate or not, without knowing the
exact day and time of her competing. Most Competitions do not give us information until 5-14 days
prior. Competitions also have the right to make last minute changes to the schedule at any time ~ so you
need to be flexible with your time in order to participate.
Elite Dancers will compete with their current dance class routine, and wear their current dance costume,
shoes, etc. All dancers participating in a competition must have proper UCD apparel to wear at the
competitions and during the Awards Ceremony, either a UCD Jacket or sweatshirt.
Dancers competing will be asked to purchase specific make-up and earrings. If you purchased these
items last year, we will be using the same make-up and earrings. To avoid any scrambling at the last
minute, dancers that still have their items will need to bring them into the Studio in advance and show the
teachers that they do indeed have them, and that they are in good condition.
All families are responsible for their own transportation to each Competition.
Are you also interested in taking a SOLO ~ DUET ~ TRIO to a Competition?
If you are part of the Elite Competition Teams, and participate in these Competitions with your group, this
makes you eligible to also do a Solo, Duet, or Trio!
Enrollment Form & decisions on ALL Competitions must be made no later than October 24, 2014.
Payment options available.
Solo/Duets/Trios ~ limited spots available, first come first serve. Once you turn in the Enrollment Form,
all scheduled payments are non-refundable.

Dancers will not be allowed to choreograph their own routines. Choreographing costs are included in the
package price.
Dancers will need to suggest three songs, but UCD reserves the right pick a completely different song.
Dancers will need to suggest what style of dance they want to perform, but the final decision will be up to
the UCD Teachers and Choreographers (and what style they see fits your dancer the best).
A total of five rehearsals with a UCD teacher will be required in order to participate in your first Competition.
This opportunity is only made available to currently enrolled UCD Elite dancers, who are also in Technique
Plus. These dancers must continue to be enrolled in their current dance schedule for the entire year in order
to participate.
In order to bring a solo/duet/trio to a Competition, you must also participate in the group routine at that same
Competition. The only exception is if, for that certain Competition, it’s only opened to solo/duet/trios.
Limited spots available. First come, first serve. You pick your own duets/trios partners, but feel free to reach
out to the UCD Directors if you are looking for someone to dance with.
If your dancer commits to participating in the Solo/Duet/Trio/Small Group portion of the competition, she will
be representing U Can Danz! Dance Company. It will be very important that she schedule time to get
together with her dance partner(s), outside of the dates below and/or making time to rehearse at home.
UCD reserves the right to pull a dancer(s) from the competition at any time if they are not fully prepared with
their routines. No refunds would be issued if this were to happen. It’s very important to practice on your own
and/or with your group!
Under parental supervision, we will make the studio available for you to rent without any UCD teachers
there. At least one dance parent needs to be present supervising the entire time though.
To help keep costs low, dancers are allowed to use a past/used UCD dance costume (it must be in good
condition and approved by teachers). If wearing a past UCD Costume, only one UCD solo/duet/trio is
allowed to wear that costume. First come, first serve ~ so if it’s important to you to re-use a costume, put
your request in as soon as possible.
If dance families want to order a new costume, UCD can provide you with options. Dancers will be allowed
to pick their own costume, but it must seek final approval by UCD Directors.
Collaboration Session
This Two-hour Session will be a collaboration of the Choreographer and student(s). Dancer’s routines will have
been choreographed in advance. They will be taught their entire routine, and adjusted accordingly. If the session
ends up being unproductive due to the dancer not putting forth enough effort, and/or being late, the
Teachers/Choreographers may request that further work is needed. At this time we will require that the
dancer(s) set up a second Collaboration Session. This extra session will be an additional fee.
Dancers must bring a video device with them to this session.
COLLABORATION SESSION DATES ~ See schedule on following page for day/time slots
One Hour Follow-up Rehearsal
Dancers will need to schedule one 60-minute Follow-up Rehearsal. These are only offered the first two
weekends of January. Time slots will be announced at a later time.
Three Additional Mandatory Rehearsals
Dancers will need to schedule three 45-minute rehearsals. These 45-minute time slots will only be made
available on Saturday mornings, and Sunday evenings. Day/time slots will be announced at a later time.
More than one Competition ~ follow-up Rehearsals
If you are taking your Solo/Duet/Trio to more than one competition, you will need to schedule one follow-up
45-minute rehearsal within 10 days before each additional Competition. These 45-minute time slots will only be
made available on Saturday mornings, and Sunday evenings. Each Competition we receive feedback from
judges and/or Teachers that might be very helpful in preparing for the next Competition. The one exception (for
some) taking place for the ShowStopper Competition (see enrollment form for details).
Cost for Participating in a Solo, Duet, or Trio at a Competition ~ Collaboration Package
Package Price includes Choreographing a Personal Routine, one 2-hr Collaboration Session, one 1-hr follow-up
rehearsal, three 45-minute private rehearsals ($280 for solos, $140 each for duets, $95 each for Trio). There is
also an Entry Fee charged by each Competition that you add on. Any additional Competitions, after your first,
will require a follow-up rehearsal. Please see Enrollment Form to better understand all fees.
